You've got to love the posters who, most nights, would have gladly traded Del Zotto for a bag of pucks, but somehow expected Seth Jones in return.

I expect AV was consulted on this deal before it was consummated. He would have seen a lot of Klein coaching the Canucks (especially in the playoffs). If he gave it the rubber stamp, I am more than okay with it.
Very true. You can tell who knows more about hockey than others. If Nashville trade Seth Jones for Del zotto then i would seriously have to consider the Nashville GM to get a cat scan

Stralman does nothing offensively anymore.

But he has become an excellent defensive player

I think you are looking at what stralman was supposed to be instead of what he has actually become

Stralman still moves the puck very well even if he doesn't show up on the scoresheet. He has improved defensively, but he is not on Klein's level. Have you seen him play much? If not, how can you argue?

This thread highlights something...HFNYR is severely lacking in knowledge yet possesses extraordinary conviction. So many people here think they're playing Francesca and go for these grandiose statements with every post even when they are uncertain or entirely unaware of what they're talking about. If he is a legitimately good 2nd pair D man then we at least traded for a player. Regardless the staff and management deserves a lot of criticism for only managing to get this considering MDZ's past performances. Even coming into this season they were telling Av how good he is. More than enough blame can also be put at MDZ's feet for not putting in the effort to become better physically and mentally out there

I think it's a safer assumption that we lose one of Girardi or Stralman. I don't think we will keep both. Stralman is worth 3.5+ on the open market. Girardi 5+. Do you see us spending 8M on both of them (assuming we get a small hometown discount)?

I don't.

I agree… also, you never know what's going on behind closed doors. Maybe Girardi wants to resign while Stralman is asking for a 5 year deal at 4.5 per… or maybe Girardi wants 5 years at 8 mill per… at that point… a steady RD whose locked in at 2.9 mill is a great asset.

ppl forget how well MDZ played defensively 2 years ago.

This system, and the asinine man to man coverage was what killed his value.

I think it was playing the right side that hurt the most, to be honest.

Speaking of man coverage, does anyone know if Nashville plays man/Klein will have a long adjustment period? I asked a bit earlier but I don't think I saw an answer (sorry if I missed one!).

Klein is 6'1 200lbs. He's a very good skater and very reliable defensively. He is a lot like Girardi and very tough. His contract is incredible (2.9M for 4 years). He's a very good penalty killer. He currently has 75 hits and 94 blocks in 47 games. Girardi leads the team in blocks with 95.

Sather says Rangers want to sign all their free agents, hopefully before end of season. But this does give security if Girardi leaves.

He better not let these guys leave for nothing.

If anything, this allows him to trade Stralman.

Because I was never discussing klein to begin with

"Sather wants to sign all of his free agents".

Jesus ****ing christ. More of the same garbage.

if he played the way he did last year, we wouldnt be looking to trade him this year.

it will be interesting to see Klein playing in this system.

It's done. To me Nashville won this trade IF MDZ can turn it around. We won this trade as of right this minute.

It's all depending on MDZ.

As of now though, who cares. he's a Ranger and I'll cheer for him.

i'd pair him with Moore. Moore needs some steady help. Stralman and Staal have been fine.

People are out to lunch if they think Klein is taking over for Girardi on the top pairing.

As a general rule, I think people suck at judging defensive play (I probably do too most of the time). They only really pay attention to what happens on the rush/when someone makes an egregious error.

If you're not watching the game live, it's much harder to tell how a defenseman is actually doing in my opinion.

The fact is that del zotto was never gonna turn it around here he needed a change of scenery. The rangers needed another reliable defensemen so right now considering what del zotto was giving us we got better

Another HUGE positive of this deal is John Moore finally gets to play with a vet. He needs a stay-at-home partner so he can open up his game and jump into the rush more.

If bringing in Klein makes Moore better, than this turns out to be a 2-for-2 trade in our favor (Bad Moore and Mediocre DelZotto for Good Moore and Girardi-lite).

I suggest you just resign to the notion of that happening.

Set your expectations low, expect the worst. If something different happens you'll be pleasantly surprised.

No point in getting angry every time there is mention of our free agents coming back. That's the likelihood of the event.

The one thing I worry about is the lack of any offense from the blue-line at this point. Unless Moore really takes a step forward, McDonagh is the only d-man putting up any points.

Girardi has 15 in 52.
Stralman has 4 in 51.
Staal has 6 in 42.
Moore has 9 in 50.

Where is the offense coming from on the back-end?

I don't mind this trade. Hate to see Klein go, but we are very thin on the left side and MDZ brings more offensive upside than Klein.

NYR is going to love Kleiner. Great, quiet defender. You can feel comfortable when he's on the ice. Very good skater. Good PKer. Takes very few penalties at that. He's a ****ing trooper, as well. I can't tell you how many times I've seen the guy block a puck with his foot/hand/leg/back/whatever, limp off the ice in obvious pain and still not miss a shift.

Sounds just like Danny G, except an actual plus skater, who is signed for four more years at LESS THAN 3M.
