Well in his first two years as a Ranger before signing with Dallas he went 23-30-53 in 86 games...and 28-37-65 in 104 games including the playoffs. Pretty good for a talentless scrub right?
And then in his first season back after the Dallas debacle he went 15-18-33 in 57 games...not bad.
A real pain in the ass, but he could back it up. A player like him would still have a place in the league...an aggravating jackass, to be sure, but he could still put up good points.
Lappy's not that kind of player. Comparing them is apples and oranges. Has a history with AV, so here's a PTO to give him a bit of a spotlight to raise his profile and maybe have another team sign him. As has been mentioned, Rangers need some extra guys around to push the kids during camp, so a veteran (albeit Lappy...) works for that.
Works for both player and team, and some other guys hanging around might not be ready to commit to a PTO in the hopes that another team may come knocking. If Gagner's still around towards camp, he's a guy I'd offer a PTO to. Still young, has the talent.
