I know it is excrutiating for some to admit, but he could be a decent addition for the Rangers. That said, the Rangers are more than a Lapierre away from being competitive.

I get why people hated Avery. I really do. With the Rangers at least the first few seasons he was a very productive player and his coming to the team was a real adrenaline boost. Saying he was a **** player doesn't hold true--not at least for his time with the Rangers.

He was an aggravating, annoying ******* to play against. You know sometimes I've thought the same about let's say P.K. Subban and yet I admire the way Subban gets under skins. I'd love to have him on my team. Is Subban really a dirty player?----eh, I don't know--I wouldn't really say so. With Avery (at least again as a Ranger) all the annoying **** that he pulled on other teams but apart from Ladislav Smid I can't think of anyone he ever sent to the hospital. It was mostly yapping and hard hitting, some whacking and hacking (which you see with a lot of guys) and getting someone in a spot that stung more than really hurt them. He wasn't like a Torres or a Cooke who would try to take your knee out or be cruising around looking for a head shot. And other than the suspension Sean Avery got for remarking on Dion Phaneuf's love life he was never ever suspended by the NHL for anything. My opinion Avery was nasty to play against but he wasn't really dirty.

They probably need a player like Hagelin and Stralman. :sarcasm:

He is not as bad of a player as some of you are making him out to be. I think he is a good teammate.

Latest on Maxim Lapierre: he was hired for the playoffs by Lugano of the Swiss NLA only to take draws, piss off opponents and, in rare occasions, to park himself in front of the goalie to screen him. That's it.
In his best highlight, in a game in the finals, he spent a good minute yelling profanities at the coach of the other team.

The good: hilarious, entertainment factor 10.
The bad: can't skate, can't play (in Switzerland. Imagine how exponentially worse he would be in the NHL...).

I am stunned he even got a PTO.

Really? I recall him having really good wheels but really crappy hands and hockey sense.

The Swiss league is very fast & not physical, but still Lapierre looked like he had cement in his hockey boots. It was cringe worthy to see. I think he is done.

Lapierre doesn't have a good hockey sense but he is a good skater and has good hands.

He was good in the shootout too.

There's really no realistic way to spin him into a useful addition. They have a lot of 4th line quality guys and many who are better than Lapierre. They've got a ton of depth there. If they thought they really needed Lapierre they would have signed him to a real contract, not a PTO.

This is World Cup fodder/doing a guy a favor.

This should not be that hard...

One more time: Lapierre played in the Swiss NLA playoffs for Lugano last season. I live outside Lugano, roughly 3 miles away from the Stadium. I have been following Lugano since 1978.
I saw the entire playoffs that Lugano played. Lapierre could not keep up with anybody else speed wise (truly a painful lumbering around) and the only valuable thing he provided was prowess in the faceoff circle.
The coach (Dough Shedden, a Canadian. As a player he was lucky enough to play with Lemieux as his center, allowing Doug to put up a couple of 30+ goals seasons) would put him in for pretty much all defensive faceoffs and then get him out as soon as feasible. He would also put him in when there was an opponent taking liberties with our star players; Lapierre would get there and rough up the culprit or just threaten him a bit. This covers 90% of his play in Switzerland.

Did YOU see Lapierre play in Switzerland? What is your assessment, how would you describe his play in Switzerland?

The Lapierre that will be trying out for the NYR, has played its last hockey when I saw him play (= for Lugano). If the Lapierre I saw, is the Lapierre that will show up in NYC, I should think the NYR will say no thank you.

Showing videos of him in the NHL, is not the latest evolution of mister Lapierre.

Actually, just adding "anymore" after "can't skate" would've made it.

Lapierre is never going to make the team. NYR already have tons of better depth options under contract.

As our resident encyclopedia of knowledge on HFNYR, Rangerboy, pointed out:

Lapierre is a Newport Sports guy. These pro tryout contracts are usually favors to the agent. Other teams can see the player play. Gorton is throwing AV a bone by bringing in his boy for a tryout.

Seriously i dont mind this as a NYR fan. In the playoffs in 2014/2015 season he was great for Pens against us. Pain in the ass to play against and he was solid that series for them. Dont get me wrong he isnt very talented at all but he can certainly be a decent pickup as a 4th line player at league minimum. If it doesnt work out, just send him down to the minors.

I can see it now. The Lapierre-Glass duo taking the NHL by storm! The LAG line. Always 999 ping.

....and Avery was a far cleaner player.

This gets lost in the fold too often. Avery never got suspended for anything on-ice. He was the ultimate troll, so I understand the hate. But people try and put him on the same level as rat ****s like Cooke and Marchand who go out there and hurt people. Avery never did any of that. Shoves, face-washes, a slash here and there? Sure, but nothing that ever came close to injuring anyone.

Coming from a team that employed Colton Orr....what the second you dump your goon, you mount the high horse? At least Pens (Cooke) and Buffalo (Kaleta) fans have the sense to remain mum.

I have always hated Lapierre. Hate the way he plays and doesn't back it up. He's a snake. At least Orr backed up his game. Grouping an entire fan base into one category based off of current or previous players is ridiculous. I'm entitled to hate who I want and I hate Lapierre. Deal with it.
