Man, Sherwood is quite the story. Undrafted, 29 years old and finally getting a shot as a top six forward. And he's not only fitting in, he's driving that line right now.
Wow, I googled him and he is indeed 29. I thought he was a 26-27 year old.

Anyways, I’m a massive Sherwood fan since day 1. Changed my user title from Hoglander to Sherwood

Before talking about anything else there needs to be some venting about the reffing in this game. First you have the ludicrous Hughes ejection but that wasn't he worst thing that happened, incredibly. We're up 4-1 with 5 minutes to go and Ottawa has basically quit and are trying to goon things up and Stutzle takes a massive charging/boarding run at Hoglander that was 10x worse than the Hughes/Norris play. Then Stutzle instigates a fight with Hoglander. This should have been a textbook 4 min PP for Vancouver, game over. But somehow *Hoglander* is given the extra 2 minutes (I guess for winning the fight that Stutzle started?) and Ottawa is thrown a lifeline. Then Soucy is mauled *twice* on the ensuing PP leading to the 4-2 goal and now Ottawa is back in the game. Probably the single worse example of game management BS I've ever seen, and it was in a game where we already had a ludicrous call go against us. f***ing ridiculous. If we had lost this game I probably would have stopped watching the NHL for a while.
If the officiating doesn't favor the Canucks when the opposite is true, you really have to wonder if the ownership and/or management ever really pissed off key figurehead in the officials community. I recall that the officials in the NBA really had it out against the Suns when Robert Sarver was the owner. Things only got better after he sold the team.

Handling Adversity
  • A lot to throw at the team and handled it really well
  • Proud of the guys
  • Don’t want the defencemen in the scrums and taking penalties
  • Get the puck in deep
  • Only had 5 defencemen so had to be careful
  • Managed the puck well tonight
Sasson
  • Really liked his game
  • Seized the moment
Hughes Penalty
  • Would have to see it again before he can comment
  • Didn’t see it as a vicious crouch check
Brady Tkachuk
  • Trying to get the team going
  • Ref could have controlled things a bit better
  • A fiery guy and got to respect that
Battle at the End of the Game
  • Did a good job
  • Couldn’t afford to have guys taking penalties
Tonight’s Game
  • Played a really terrific game
  • A lot of crosschecking in front of the net at the end
  • Guys really handled the pressure
  • 82 game schedule and will go through some adversity
  • Block the outside game
  • Everything changes after 24 hours

He’s had 1 good year in the last 4, and it was basically a SH% bender.

Signed for $1.5 million of course he’d have value. At $3 million with term for a depth guy playing this badly, good luck.
Geez Hoglander is playing fine, he’s taking some dumb penalties but he’s got more hustle than half the team, if he gets hot he’s gonna pot goals because of how many opportunities he creates. I love the guy I feel like he’s gonna be the one who gets traded but I don’t see any reason to be throwing him under the bus

It's funny to reminisce about Travis Green but even funnier is to watch his post game comments tonight and realize he's completely out of answer 20 games into the season:

How this guy got another job as head coach is beyond me.
I listened to this to see if he said the line. He didn’t he said that “they are a good checking team”.

Unfortunately I don't think we have the assets to make a trade work, manage the cap, and not gut our roster at the same time. But I sure wish we did 🫠
Hoglander, Sasson, Forbort, Kunz, Topotilo, Briesbois, 2028 4th for Tkachuk and 2025 3rd

Hoglander literally getting penalties the last 2 games for being too strong. Refs see him dummy bigger players and just assume he must have cheated somehow.

Gets checked from behind, and jumped gloves off, and ends up with an added 2. BS.

Ottawa is just a really immature team captained by a giant toddler that is starting to throw his usual late November tantrum. Bummer they hired the most arrogant coach I've ever seen. I really have a hard time imagining the leadership of that team turning the page and grabbing a playoff spot.

The refereeing made no sense this game. You have a team up 4-1 late in the third just trying to coast the rest of the game and grab the 2 points. The other team starts to muck it up and play frustrated but for some reason we were getting called. Not even to mention the Hughes 5min was the biggest joke I've seen in a long time. Dummy refs tonight horrible game management.

Watching him for Colorado (AHL) in 21-22 against Abbotsford I couldn't understand why he wasn't in the NHL at that point on someone's 2nd line. He was fast, he competed, he had a rocket of a shot. Was probably the most dominant offensive player in the AHL. But the insane hitting is something I don't remember at all from that point in his career.

Sherwood always had talent, but at his size, there was so many guys bigger who could so what he did. Credit to Sherwood he upped hja intensity, got stronger, worked on his two way game and he got a chance. He might be 29, but he's a young 29 with not alot of mileage.

Hoglander needs to look at Sherwood and the work he put in, or he might not be an NHL player for much longer.

Good win. Looking adversity in the eye and spitting. Gotta love it.

Not enough said about the shuffling of the dee pairs (obviously because Quinn's absence causing even more shuffling). But thought Soucy-Juulsen looked decent, and Brannstrom handled top 4 deployment for at least one game.

Sasson showed well. His dad's a beaut.

I said at some point earlier in the season that EP would be PPG by game 20. That's probably not going to happen, but his line was huge tonight. Sherwood is on fire right now, and DeBrusk is finding his fit.

Definitely Dakota's best game of the season. Can't wait until he gets his first goal. Fighting on Hockey Fights Cancer night is...I dunno something

Happy we got the 2 points. With the weirdness for lack of a better term surrounding the team this season, just get in and see what happens.

Sherwood has been typecast as fourth line, energy winger his entire time in the NHL. But we should have seen some of his offensive breakout coming.

In the 2021-22 season he had 36 goals and 39 assists in just 57 games for the Colorado Eagles in the Av's organization. But never got much of a shot in Denver. Then after he signed with Nashville for the 2022-23 season, he had 22 goals and 16 assists in only 42 games for Milwaukee; and added another seven goals and six assists for the Preds.

So you have to admire his tenacity and determination to stick with and get rewarded. One of the real 'feel good stories' on this year's Canucks.
