Shestyorkin may be a terrible goalie for all we know, he is playing in the KHL a league that has Nigel Dawes as one of the leading scorers. I'm hopeful for him but until I see him in North America playing against NHL'ers on a consistant basis he is #3 behind Georgiev and Lundvist so its early to be thinking about what to do with him. Georgiev has proven himself big time. Lundqvist will have to decide if he wants a cup and to keep playing somewhere because he isnt getting another contract in New York, so if he wants to play he has to move to another team.....does Columbus make sense?

Shesty is already the heir to Hank and hasn’t even played an NHL game? We are seriously putting Hank as a backup? An NHL HOFer is going to the be the backup or a healthy scratch because Georgiev had a solid end to the season and the hyped up Russian who hasn’t even played in the NHL?

Wow.

Remember the Prince Talbot, Heir? Yeah...

Love Shesty as a prospect, but I’m not trading Gyorg to accommodate him. He could end up a bust, we have no idea. Not saying that is what will end up happening, just that I wouldn’t be so quick to throw away a guy like Georgiev - who HAS flashed big time at the NHL level - to make room.

Ideally, Gyorg and Shesty battle it out. We kinda have someone in the way, though...

I'm telling you, you can't trade Georgiev now. I used Raanta as a comparison earlier and I think it's very valid. Raanta returned trash to Chicago (Haggerty). Georgiev is a backup who evidently has a lot of talent but is still just a backup. His value is extremely minimal.

The obvious answer here is to buy out Lundqvist

Will Lundqvist finish his career as a Ranger?

There are many legendary players who were great players with one team and finished their career with another team. The team wanted to move into a different direction. The player wanted to continue playing.

Joe Montana. Karl Malone. Patrick Ewing. Hakeem Olajuwon. Peyton Manning.

Brian Leetch played for Toronto and Boston.

Brett Favre was a Falcon(he barely played in his one season there) before a Packer and he became a legend in Green Bay. Management was sick of Favre going back and forth on retirement and they wanted to go with Aaron Rodgers. They traded Favre to the Jets.

This post could have been a lot longer. I'm disappointed in you.

Ray Bourque. Paul Pierce. Wade Boggs. Everyone leaves Boston.

Jarome Iginla. The Flames and the player decided it was time to move on. Agreed to a trade with the Bruins. Iginla decided he wanted to be traded to the Penguins instead. Signed with the Bruins. One year with bonuses. Signed with the Avs afterwards. Traded to LA. Wore 88. #12 was taken. Gaborik.

Anyways, I don't think Lundqvist is going to leave no matter how much you want him to, or how much you can find historical examples of similar players doing so.

I can't believe he left out Brodeur.

If there is any trend that we could use, look at the Sedins. That's his age group. They did not want to leave Vancouver, and they didn't. In spite of that team being bad, they stayed. Something about Swedish players remaining loyal to their teams. It's usually the team that forces them to leave. Could be a cultural thing.

OEL signed with Arizona in spite of the team always being bad. Wouldn't surprise me if that's part of it. Loyalty over chasing a dream.

Not worried about the out clause.

I think he and his agent understand the difference between getting used to NA rinks and game and getting buried because he may not have earned the right to stay in the NHL

I do kind of wonder about Lundqvist's contract last year. Maybe he does retire?

If eventually this season the others are getting the majority of the starts, it's not going to leave a ton of games for him.

Yet before that can happen Georgiev needs to show more consistency and Shesterkin show what he has in North America.

Unless the Rangers goaltending situation changes, Georgiev is the only goalie that will require protection.
I know we could keep him easily - but it would also be a good piece of bait to protect other assets

Talbot was back when Lundqvist was still at the top of his game. At this point he is...not. I love Lundqvist, but he's at the point where he can't perform the way he used to and it makes a massive amount of sense to at least split time between him and another goalie or two. He shouldn't play the majority of games any longer especially when the Rangers are trying to develop other goalies
