If Messier gets a prominent role, I'll be a lot more concerned.
Drury is GM and President. At least if Messier is in the organization it won't be as Dolan's lap dog.

I think we see a trade for a veteran center this summer. Dolan will say get one at any cost but I have faith in Drury to get one for as fair as a package as possible. He knows the position he's in but he's not going to get bent over.

The hysterics here that Lundkvist and Kakko are going to be dealt for the corpse of Jonathan Toews are hilarious. The guy is going to play for Chicago or retire. He's not accepting a trade anywhere, nor will Stan Bowman trade him.

I wouldn't hate Kopitar, honestly. He has at least 2 or 3 more good years with money retained, and he'll be out of contract by the time he sharply declines anyway, IMO. He shouldn't fall off a cliff based on his style of play, but just knowing the Rangers, watch him turn into a pumpkin as soon as he puts on a blueshirt anyway.

Right or not, the idea of Messier coming in reminds me of when Espo took over.
Esposito sucked majorly. His trade of Mike Allison was so bad. Many bad trades. I've hated Esposito since.

And he demanded we get Johnny Bucyk and got Rick Middleton traded. Esposito is the devil incarnate as far as I'm concerned.

Lol I think you're the first one I've seen that likes it, but I am.. more or less OK with all of it. Drury would have had multiple offers to be the GM somewhere else. It's been clear for a while that he's behind or significantly influencing a lot of the moves that Gorton has been making. Could be a classic case of an employee working hard enough to take over his boss's job. Then JD steps in and disagrees with firing Gorton and he's fired, too. If there's one thing that makes me happy in all of this, it's that we get to keep Drury and his hockey mind in the organization.. and if we kept Gorton around, Drury was leaving for sure.

I'm not going to jump to any conclusions about this until we see Drury make a few moves. If he starts going out and selling the farm for vets? Then I'll start to think maybe Dolan is pulling the strings, and then maybe we can panic. But I'm not there yet. I don't think Dolan has any desire to get more involved with the Rangers, it's never been a priority to him. Hopefully if the team makes big moves in the offseason they are smart moves, and in a year or two this whole thread looks foolish.

Gorton and JD screwed up the Kreider extension, the trade and extension for Trouba. Before that even with the McD/Miller trade return, They did nothing particularly well other than get lottery lucky in the draft and have Fox want to be a Ranger.

I think if we make a move that Dolan has his mitts on, we'll probably get some idiot like Kurtis MacDermid.

I agree that we're not trading the farm for a Medicare Dream Team circa 2002. If he was going to do that, he wouldn't kept Drury.

I think he just wanted to promote Drury and disagreement over the statement was the last straw.

I think those three "efforts" vs. the crosstown rival pushed the puck over the goal line. Those losses, the way they lost, to THAT team lit a fire under Dolan's ass. Way too impulsive for my tastes but I'm certain that was a factor.

Steinbrenner used to call and demand rookies be cut/demoted if they performed poorly in spring training games against the hated Mets.

What does ADA have anything to do with any of this?
Nothing but all those that supposedly embarrassed being a Ranger fan after today better not be hoping for a ADA return because the guy deserves what happened to him. Why would any Ranger fan want a guy back on the team that was an A hole with some of his teammates and has no respect not only with this organization but apparently within the League. All you ADA worshipers read this NOBODY WANTED HIM.

Nothing against Gorton but I think Drury will be the better GM.

I wouldn’t have fired either of them. With that said, I can find reasons to be unhappy with some of Gortons moves. For this season, it was a huge oversight not to get some more toughness in the lineup. Especially when you have so many kids, high end finesse players, and on top of that your playing all your games in the east and you had to have expected a tougher season than usual. In addition, I think they’ve been a team that has failed to fill in with some veteran leaders. Also, I can’t imagine Dolan is thrilled paying all of these buyouts. The ADA debacle also played out on Gorton’s watch. They had the guy around for awhile - they had to have had some foresight here. I don’t see a guy just having a complete melt down with no warning. The Kreider deal was yet another mistake signing to add to the list. Without lottery luck we might not have a team trending so we’ll. Overall, I still think he did a positive job for all of my bashing but I’m ok with Drury taking on his role.

JD should’ve been untouchable. It’s a shame that it played out the way that it did because he seemed like an ideal face for this franchise.

After what happened today, we have to wonder about every team this move makes as to whether Dolan was involved in it or not

A franchise altering day, the day the Rangers died.

I hope I'm overreacting

Cleaning house after a 56 game COVID season?

Team that just missed the playoffs. Norris candidate. Panarin one of the best PPG players in the league.

Was this a do or die playoffs season? Really?

This decision wasn’t about hockey. No way. If people want to believe the mouthpiece spin, I can’t blame you it’s a reasonable way to wrap your head around things. But this all reeks to high heaven.

Embarrassed and concerned for the future. If this was about hockey it means ownership has no idea what a rebuild actually entails.

I am not in agreement.

I don't like Dolan at all, yet letters and statements is not how to run a NHL team. I am all for them rebuilding and even continuing to do so, I don't need to see them add goons, yet JD and Gorton had their chance to make this team play with some pride, they failed.

but really in the end this all comes back to the thought of do you REALLY trust Dolan to be a competent person in figuring how a team should be built and how to do all of those things?

Even if Gorton can be blamed for some bad moves (honestly every single GM makes mistakes) what's the rational for firing JD after 2 years of bringing him back to much fanfair? Even if Gorton is a mediocre GM at best that's a huge step up from the incompetent owner that Dolan is

that's what it comes down to, I don't trust Dolan to do anything right

I think both guys should’ve been allowed to at least finish out the season. JD in particular deserved more respect from this franchise. It reeks of a knee jerk reaction where tempers may have been hot. Otherwise, there’s no reason not to at least wait a couple weeks.

At least Kreider is a good player. The other comments you have made are true. The one thing everyone keeps forgetting is drafting LA and FC. Sorry but for first round picks in the same year 3 years ago we have gotten nothing out of it. LA is rightfully gone and FC is a huge disappointment. At this point we should have had 2 established building blocks in their 3rd year.
