I would argue that the instigator rule has done significantly more damage than is often talked about.
As has the hit from behind rule in my opinion with players constantly turning and making themselves vulnerable instead of absorbing hits

This has zero to do with performance etc....
I mean maybe if by performance Jimmy means he wants more fists thrown and longs for the days of Betts, Brashear, and Boogaard. Either that or performance = playoff ticket sales. Its definitely not about performance in developing a winning team though

It kind of is, and it's at least something to have an uneasy feeling about.

The one saving grace is that Drury is still here. But I don't for a moment believe this was about performance with three games left. Not with the coach still here. Not with the assistant GM still here.

Right now, I'll speculate on two fronts.

I'm going to guess that Dolan dictated the letter himself and sent it out without consulting with anyone.

I'll venture that in his fit of rage, and yes I use the word rage because Dolan is known for that behavior, he not only sent the letter but then flipped out when either the front office wasn't in favor of how he went about things, or wouldn't bend to a tantrum. Both of those are very likely.

I've seen comments here that if JD and Gorton were against the letter, they should go. Context is king there. Were they even aware of the letter? Did they agree with it in principle but thought calling for a man's job wasn't the way to go? I don't know yet.

But, I will say this from experience, Jim Dolan is an incredibly volatile person to work for. Sather had the cache to tell him to go f*** himself. And for many years, better or worse, that kept the devil on the other side of the door.

It was thought that JD had that same cache. We now know he either didn't, or he was willing to die on that hill and it is what it is.

But, I would be shocked, and I do mean shocked, if Drury has that kind of cache. And that aspect, coupled with the lack of a buffer, should be considered a concerning development.

Maybe we need to shoehorn Gene Michael in the door. He kept Steinbrener under wraps, Dolan should be a piece of cake.

I think the people who want those things aren't taking into account it's going to be a push for more than.

It likely won't be as simple as getting tougher. There's going to be a desire for instant gratification here and it's going to include the potential pursuit of big ticket names at the cost of very promising young talent. And not necessarily in a measured approach.

Could not agree more here. No impulse control whatsoever.

I hope Drury kicks *** and this entire board starts kissing his *** in no time. I really do. Maybe part of it is because I’m desperate for this to work and maybe the other half knows he’s cut out for a larger role, I don’t know. I think a lot of people that said let’s wait for the facts haven’t really stuck to that on here. They’re just shredding the owner that for the most part has stood aside and let the GM run the show for over six years now and they haven’t won. Maybe he didn’t like a lot of what he saw this year, fine, but I think it’s important to note that they took more offense to DeAngelo than they did Wilson almost busting Panarin’s skull, and players see that.

Drury being a smart and sensible guy only goes so far when you have a crazy owner breathing down your neck who just put the whole league on notice that his team is in win now mode

Eichel is almost a guarantee at this point, except the list of untouchables just got smaller

hot takes

Crazy DQ is around. Even with 3 games left, Knoblauch did fine during the covid protocol absence so I don't see that as an issue.
Crazy JD was let go. Makes more sense if JD stood up for JG.
I can see JG getting let go to make room for Drury. I'm in the boat that the Kreider and Trouba contracts were not good. Especially the NMCs. NMC in my opinion are crippling and should only be given to elite level players. The Brendan Smith signing was questionable. JJ this season too. But damn, he got a 2nd for Lias. But damn, he traded Raanta and Stepan for Lias and ADA. But damn, he acquired Adam Fox. Strome for Spooner. Zibs (and a 2nd) for Brassard. He has some strike outs but he also hits home runs and grand slams.
Win now? When we went into win now mode in the 90s we were already a top of the conference team. We are in no position to win now as we aren't even a playoff team. I think not making the playoffs however was the nail in the coffin for Gorton here. As ridiculous as this season has been and how unfair that might seem, it goes with Dolan's MO. He wants results. Even as an angry diamond spooned baby.

I expect all our good young players to be gone for shit like Eichel. We will continue to lose which is what we do best for the last 80 years. Can only hope I'm wrong.

Maybe we need to shoehorn Gene Michael in the door. He kept Steinbrener under wraps, Dolan should be a piece of cake.

That was a big part of what Sather did pretty well. It's not to debate all of his decisions --- good and bad.

Dolan unchecked is....a potential challenge of the highest degree.

Unless Sather is planning to be more active in his role as advisor (he's gotten a lot older guys), this is the first time this team hasn't had a buffer in close to 20 years. Dolan needs a buffer. He's a hot wire that needs a ground.

Strange yes- I’m just angry because JD is involved. Love that guy— huge portion of my youth listening to him and Sam!
JD is a really classy guy. My favorite moments as a Ranger fan were as a kid watching him beat the Flyers and Islanders in 1979. Every street hockey game I would play goal and every save I made I would say "save JD!" I really think there was a chance they asked JD to fire Gorton and JD refused. I wish they would have kept JD. Why bring him here to fire him in under 2 years?
