Gord Miller said today on leafs lunch that the Wild have had talks with Nylanders agent, and are just as far apart as the leafs.

Willy is in a position to lose a tonne of money if he ends up sitting a year. No way the KHL pays him anywhere close to what he gets here.
Well ya, it isn't like other GMs don't know what comparables are out there,

I like the number. I'm hoping it's teh same. If you get that deal, unless a player of equal or better value to the team comes your way, I suggest you keep Nylander.
Which is the plan i believe. Honestly, if Dubas wanted to trade him, sign him to a 3 year bridge at no more than 5 million....

If you've been on here long, you know that there's a level of toxicity that comes with people disagreeing with you. If you haven't, start a thread yourself and test it for yourself.

It's true. I started a thread like a week or so after I joined, and I never, ever, did that again.

I am not saying everything I say is perfect, we all have our moments when people are rude, but I find myself only posting on very specific things, and reading other posts mostly.

It just doesn't seem worth the arguments.

In the crazy scenario where Nylander sits for the year, I wonder who the Leafs would target as a 1 year rental considering how much free cap they have?

I’d be surprised if he didn’t just sign for 1 year to play out the year. That would be a tough thing to sit out an entire year. Especially considering the success TOR is having. Has there been any word on if Nylander is open or has suggested maybe to trade him?

Getting back to Nylander, I do believe it's worth considering the trade options (which I'm assuming the related-poster is doing).
What I'm interested in seeing is what a team with Nylander (and now Matthews) looks like.

... Then I'd be interested in revisiting the options for Defense after we've determined what / how the team plays with a full contingent.

No point in signing him for one year. He comes back next year with arbitration rights and more leverage and he needs a new contract at the same time as Marner and Matthews.

If Nylander sits it's not like his cap hit goes with him. The Leafs can then use that cap space on a rental if need be. And whether Nylander likes it or not the Leafs hold his rights until UFA. In this scenario if he sits a year and doesn't want to sign next year at what would most likely be an even lower AAV then he faces the very real consequence of losing another NHL season of play. None of this benefits Nylander in the slightest.
None of it benefits Toronto either. And in this world they then give up assets for a rental. Wouldn't you prefer to either sign Nylander with only the cost of money or trade an asset who is already going to sit for someone who isn't?

I don't think the Leafs would be open to that, since it would put too much stress signing contracts next summer. If its a bridge, I'd assume it would have to be 2-3 years or no dice.

Petry for Nylander. Cup.

Intra-division rivals will make it tough (especially since they would want Petry around as insurance even though Weber looked great in his first game back), but they did trade us Pleks last season, so I guess anything is possible for the right price.. compounding the problem is that they're playing really well right now and in the hunt, so if this does go down, it'll probably be closer to the deadline if they come back down to earth and are on the outside looking in.

Cup of coffee to sober up for proposing this maybe.

Well - Petry played first pairing minute for almost a year now, decent contract, right side of the universe, and is putting pretty decent numbers against toughest opposition... playing with the powerful Jordie Benn ! Would help the Leafs a lot. Cup.

That's an absolutely terrible trade for Toronto though. Nylander is the more valuable piece, Nylander could sit all season and still have more value.

That would suck for Leafs because it means they would have to give up unecessary assets that they could have kept if Nylander played.

I don’t know if this thread is the place for it but here’s a trade proposal.

New Jersey - Toronto
NJD:
Will Butcher
Marcus Johansson
Michael Mcleod

Leafs:
William Nylander
(Maybe a 3rd rounder maybe not)

Does that wet the old whistle?
Top 4 young offensive defenseman with bags of potential.
Top 6 scoring winger.
Highly rated forward prospect.
For
Highly rated young star in the middle of a poisonous contract dispute.

Anyone can play first pairing minutes - particularly if you've traded your prospect D.

Hainsey for Petry

Both are first pairing defensemen apparently.

I think the smart play would be to trade Nylander for some good picks/prospects who can help out in the future on friendly ELC's.

Fully agree.

Our D has not been maligned as much as people thought, it has actually been pretty decent. I also think with prospects coming, we will be ok.

I always think if you are a team, why not be Elite at something, I mean UTTERLY elite. With Willy in this lineup, and with other players ( Kappy and Johnsson mostly) stepping up, we would be insanely deep at forward. I would love to see how other teams handle that.

This is of course because our D has been adequate. We don't have some of the big horses back there to be a Nashville or SJS, so lets add to an already stacked forward lineup (Willy) and see what happens.

As somebody who isn't that high on Nylander I don't think a bunch of good trading pieces for Nylander would be a smart move. They basically need to do a 1 for 1 (or 1 for 1+)trade that involved a player that can end up potentially better then Nylander back

I present to you one Ronald Hainsey and formerly one Dion Phaneuf. Both play/played top pairing minutes in Toronto.....so what exactly do you think you are proving here?
