Leafs are going to ice 4 forwards with 11+ AAV next season. The only team in the league to have such allocation and probably the first team in the history of NHL to have two wingers at 11AAV+ and only one 1st round win in at least 5 tries

Love for the players is one thing; but Team>player. Unless there is a miracle I think we should just kiss the cup dream bye bye until we rebuild again.

I really need some convincing here that we can go for the cup with this cap allocation; because I just don't see it

I think we can use a similar argument to say lets put Willy to a center that is not tavares or matthews and lets see how willy fares or his center does

Don't get me wrong here. I love WillyNy. But somethings gotta give here man. how the hell are we supposed to win in post season? There doesn't seem to be a plan in place. it just feels like just keep paying premium dollars to the core who hasnn't shown up in post season especially in teh games that count and buckle under pressure; because clearly they are the one that is going to do it because there isn't going to be cap left for any quality depth, quality D or goal tending.
I understand you're upset and can't see the light yet but I assure you its not all darkness. We have a chance, it's simply about desire and Willy has shown he has that.

Now to deal with Marner/Tavares accordingly, and many disagree on how. But with only Matty and Willy locked up I don't see how it's unfathomable that we can still change the complexion of this team.

While I wish the contract would have come in around $10.5 million, you're telling me that we could still have a roster something like this next year, assuming a $87.5 million salary cap (as projected)?

Forwards
Matthews: $13,250,000
Nylander: $11,500,000
Tavares: $11,000,000
Marner: $10,900,000
Forward: $5,500,000
Forward: $3,250,000
Kampf: $2,400,000
Jarnkrok: $2,100,000
Forward: $1,500,000
Knies: $925,000
Minten: $845,000
Forward: $800,000
Forward: $800,000

Defense
Rielly: $7,500,000
Defenseman: $5,900,000
Liljegren: $2,500,000
McCabe: $2,000,000
Defenseman: $1,500,000
Timmins: $1,100,000
Defenseman: $750,000

Goalies
Jones: $1,250,000
Woll: $766,000

Total: $87,500,000

That's still a pretty good roster (carrying 22 players), in a world in which the following year the cap should rise another $4 million and Tavares' pay cut will cover the raise for Marner, Knies+
Just look at the cap allocation to everything but the top 6 forwards and top pairing D, max salary is 2.5 million! it's crazy to me. Barely any cap in the bottom 6F, bottom 4D are skimping and goalies are as cheap as you can go.

Yes with ELC, good contracts etc maybe you can make it work but skimping on basically every position but top 6 just doesn't spell success. I'm not a fan of having the majority of your cap tied in 4 players let alone them all being forwards... The depth isn't there and it will never be there. That's how the team is intended to be constructed. That's a lot of pressure on Matthews and Co and if history is any indication...

Next season is going to be a write off with the cap allocation we have. Tavares and Marner are not waiving their NMC/NTC.

And we don't even have the first rounder the following season because dubas threw it away

It's official. This team is not serious about winning.

The funny thing about this is it's not the 11.5m (overpay) that told me that. It's the fact they included a NMC for the entire duration of the contract. You would think for paying that price, you would at the very least get Limited rights to move him.

If they have the will to change it but I don’t see any evidence of that

He also highlighted that the Nylander camp felt AM34 didn't take a discount, thus they weren't going to

It's tough to blame WN88 for that, but man this culture we've created is so awful. Those first RFA contracts murdered us

Agreed here. Matthews didn't any discount and neither did Marner. I fully understand and sympathize with Willy and his camp; but thats where the GM has to come into play to make tough decisions for the betterment of the team/franchise.

Dubas SCREWED the pooch so bad with the blessings from Shanahan that we will be waiting for the next rebuild to even sniff conference finals forget about the cup.

I am really deflated today in terms of Leafs' chances at the cup. Leafs will make playoffs but I really doubt them making any significant noise post season with such cap allocation

I agree. Next season is gone essentially but the window is still wide open in 2025-2026 if we don't do stupid shit with Marner/Tavares. And honestly anything can happen if you make the dance and find that spark with hot goaltending at the right time. Just keep making the dance and hope the boys find that desire that's all we can do.

I love the player and would rather have him back at an overpayment than lose him, but it just sucks that the Leafs always seem to be faced with that choice and almost always pick the overpayment option.

I can't delude myself into thinking this is a good contract, but I do think Nylander deserves a chance to show he can be worth it. All he's done is work on his game to constantly get better every year

In a sane world.

WN signs 10.5m x 8 with a Modified (Limited) No movement clause. The fact we gave him 11.5 and do not have that right is the major issue.
MM doesn't deserve more than 11.5m x 8 but is going to get 12m at least and once again a Muskoka 5 NMC.

The NMC is the problem here.
Hopefully the team moves away from Marner.

It’s because they are gutless in negotiations

Since when are we giving a f*** about what Nick Alberga says LOL?! He’s a podcast host, not an insider.
Only the beginning. Every nobody looking for attention will be making up all kinds up things and people just lap it up.
What a time to be alive.

The NHL needs to have some kind of luxury tax or whatever if it involves players you drafted and developed. I think it'd make the league much more competitive imo if you draft well and this way you don't have to pay players league minimum just to fill out your roster. I think every team would benefit from this if they are a contender and it'd make the playoffs that much more enjoyable as well. Idk though, I'm no expert on this stuff but there's just so many teams who are struggling with a hard cap and I'm sure Covid didn't help but I think teams should be rewarded for drafting well if they can afford to pay the players whatever they are worth.
