The NHL needs to have some kind of luxury tax or whatever if it involves players you drafted and developed. I think it'd make the league much more competitive imo if you draft well and this way you don't have to pay players league minimum just to fill out your roster. I think every team would benefit from this if they are a contender and it'd make the playoffs that much more enjoyable as well. Idk though, I'm no expert on this stuff but there's just so many teams who are struggling with a hard cap and I'm sure Covid didn't help but I think teams should be rewarded for drafting well if they can afford to pay the players whatever they are worth.
CBA is still in place for a couple more seasons.
I doubt the Owners want any changes though

I can’t wait till Rantanen is making 12 because he’s getting more than 11.5. People who think the leafs are the only team who will start giving in are sadly mistaken. It’s only the beginning but we aren’t going to see a lot of team friendly deals anymore

Why?

1) Kuch - $9.5mil
2) MacKinnon $12.6 mil
3) Pasta $11.25
4) Bread Man $11.6mil
5) McDavid $12.5 mil
6) Willie $11.5 mil

If Willie continues to score at this pace over the 8 years, he's paid in the same ball park as his peers.

He's currently in his peak. This contract will kick in for the 2024-2025 playoffs when he will be 29. Let that sink in. Every single player on your quoted list is better than Nylander - Panarin was a UFA and had a bidding war. Better examples would be Aho/Tkachuk/Kucherov contracts

Nylander will be paid 11.5M at ages 34, 35, 36, 37. Half the life of his contact.

You would be delusional to think he can keep up his current pace for more than 50% of the life of the contract. His whole play style revolves around his skating and evasiveness because of his skating - which of course will slow down with age.

You should probably get comfy then. You're in for quite the wait.

Was just listening to Kyper and Bourne speculate how much he might get. I think it's between 12-13 for sure

He will be 28 the entire year of his first year of the deal next season (which kicks in July 1st THIS SUMMER). 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35. Maybe a month into age 36 if we get past the second round of the playoffs in year 8.

I agree. I been saying something similar for years.

What are you talking about homie - he'll be 28 for this years playoffs. I don't care about regular season - playoffs are where it matters. He'll be 29 for round 1 of his deal. He'll be aged 37 in year 8.

His birthday is May 1st, when do you think playoffs start?

He won a cup, give him whatever he wants

According to Cap Friendly:

"After signing Nylander to an 8 year/$11.5M AAV extension, we now show the with a projected cap hit of $66,438,000 in 2024-25, based on 14 contracts (9F-3D-2G) currently on the active roster. This leaves $21.062M in cap space for 9 spots."

According to cap friendly this is our team right now for next season.

Knies Matthews marner
Jancrok Tavares nyalnder
Holmberg kampf reaves

Rielly Timmins
Mccabe

Woll
Hilldelby

Rfa
Liljegren
Simon benoit
Nick Robertson

Noah gregor

Lots of holes that need to be filled with that 21 million. Looks manageable but I’m not sure what UFA are available next season that we could sign to help the defense.

In no way shape or form will he be 37 at any point during this contract. Do math. And he will be 27 when the playoffs start this season and we'll likely be eliminated before he turns 28 anyways. Do you know when the playoffs start and when the Leafs golf? Its before May

I don’t have to wait, we’re already seeing it. This whole internal cap bullshit is pretty much out the window with the salary jump. There’s really only two contracts now for star players.

Teams sign players after year 2 of their ELC to inflated 8-year contracts they don’t deserve and they convince their fan bases those deals are steals when they really aren’t for about 95% of them.

Or you overpay when they are about to hit UFA.

It was a tweet LOL. Y’all need to chill. And as I’ve posted before Nylander isn’t a resident of the US. So Allan Walsh’s tax bypass doesn’t directly apply. Walsh’s tax bypass applies to those who split time in Canada and the US. Not Sweden and Canada

Here is sweden-canada tax treaty (since Willy mostly stays in Canada for half of NHL games that will apply)

Cap friendly also has income tax calculator (not perfect but its something)

92/7 =13.2M AAV, who is offering that and bonuses and NMC?

Treliving was negotiating against himself. Like what did the Leafs win in this negotiation?

Other "cup fav" teams have been handing out contracts that works for both player and team.

Leafs have been handing out contracts that only works for players

Treliving takes the same big L as dubas. Freakin' loser

This could totally be the case. The one more that boggles my mind is why didn’t Dubas sign Hyman to 5.5. We had the cap to do it. Now we are here with Bertuzzi at the same cap number.

My gut tells me he wasn’t a fit with the big guys in the room.

Losing Hyman for nothing was the worst of all the moves.

Kadri for Barrie and Kerfoot is #2

It's hard to believe anyone disliking Hyman. Well, I remember Matthews not wanting Hyman on his line. And he was one of the most popular players on the team, and the only one who's popularity wasn't based on his scoring.

69 million in bonuses too, what a farce.

Move aside Dubas; Treliving is the new whipping boy

Treliving is really a freakin JOKE! What a sham of a GM.

Can we fire Shanahan already? I am done with Shanahan. Treliving has pissed me off today more than dubas did when he signed Marner to that ridiculous contract.

We pay for the player who can stand the heat in this pressure cooker market other teams can get by with players who don’t want to come here because they can’t take the heat.
Very true. I think of Willy as the quiet guy in the WW2 movie who says "Hold my beer" and breaks into the machine gun nest...kills them all and then sits back having a cigar while waiting for the rest of the guys. He, if any of the 3 amigos, is built for the playoffs.
