Why?

1) Kuch - $9.5mil
2) MacKinnon $12.6 mil
3) Pasta $11.25
4) Bread Man $11.6mil
5) McDavid $12.5 mil
6) Willie $11.5 mil

If Willie continues to score at this pace over the 8 years, he's paid in the same ball park as his peers.

Willy's 11.5 were unavoidable. But now, since he and Matthews are locked, there is no longer a threat of a serious mutiny. Keefe can be fired without asking the inmates' opinion. Marner and Tavares are secondary pieces and have little leverage now. Can be replaced by free agents or drafted players. We will see what Cuckold Shanny will do, though.

Why wouldn’t he? All he really cares about is scoring some cookies and counting his money.

You think he wouldn’t want to play with the stars in Pittsburgh? You think not winning a cup matters that much to him?
i think Mitch cares more than than the other 3 and JT is the one cares most about getting his cookies and counting his money , all you have to do is watch how much Johnny ups his cheating on D as soon as his points start to dry up

He's scored at this pace for less than half a season. Do you really think it makes sense to assume he's going to do so for the next 8 years?

I'm a big fan of Nylander but these guys are not his peers, not yet anyway. I mean would you really consider trading MacKinnon for Willie? Or McDavid? Come on now.

Nylander has also since recorded a 13-game point streak and has at least a point in a league-leading 33 of 37 games this season.

That’s actually impressive

If they get ousted quickly in April, he might be looking for his big payday elsewhere and Shanny's head better roll.
i don't see Mitch going anywhere , he's a Toronto kid and probably has Leaf jammies when he was a yute

whether we get ousted quickly or win a round or two it really doesn't make that much of a difference , they need to build for a cup and getting JT off the team is the key

paying 11m for a C that needs to be sheltered defensively and is reliant on his wingers for his offensive production is a horrible waste of cap space

There really are idiots who believe that Nylander = Conor McDavid.

Bottom line is we’re a bunch of losers and will continue to be a bunch of losers

He's currently the 5th leading scorer in the NHL, so at least there's that...
That poster likes to go back as far as possible, to make his numbers as bad as possible.

Last 4+ seasons, he's 13th in goals, and 19th in points (13th in ppg in minimum 300 games). And the players ahead of him almost all have noticeably more ice time (MCD and Drai almost 4 minutes per game more).

Including this season he's been at or above a ppg, he has shown progression AND Tre does not want to look like an ass so he will make sure that Willie is on the 20+ minutes a night vs the 18ish minutes a night. Willies biggest fan for the next 8 years will be Tre.

Assume no it does not make sense to assume, I never assume, make an educated guess based on his last three years, IMO he will probably be a 90 to 100 point guy for the next 4 to 5 years and a 70 to 80 point guy for the last 3 years. It's a gamble, Tre is paying him ,expecting for him to be a top 10 scorer. we know Willie can be less than engaged at times. We know there is a good Willie and a bad Willie, hoping that the good Willie is the guy we get for most of his remaining contract.

What would Paul marner get though?
His dad is the reason most people want to see him traded. Nylander is the better player and if Marner is not willing to take a pay cut, then good riddance.

The cap is what's ruining this one.
Leafs couldn’t build a winner before the cap era, what makes you think it would be different now? They had all the money to spend, but still could get it done………

Next year will be a waste of time with a lot of minimum contract guys.
The year after Tavares’ contract will be off the books and they will have some cap relief.

Ya I understand, just that the team providing a ton of signing bonuses provides economic benefit (I.e. increase time value of money as you get your salary up front practically in full at the start of each year) and the tax implication differences too
Not sure about the tax implications of getting it a bit sooner, but overall we're talking about 'increased time' of months rather than years .

Friedman on Michael Nylander “I know there were times when the Leafs spoke directly with him to see where they were at”.

Okay back to bashing Paul Marner all the time….
Paul Marner is not the same, Paul is a slimy mule, the crap he has done to make a dollar is cringe

Happy he's back because I've always felt he's better than Marner, at least on the offensive side. I just don't get how he is paid more than Pasta when Pasta has outscored him every season during his current deal and by quite a large margin as well. Hopefully this is some team agreement where Marner and Tavares take pay cuts and allowed him to get his big pay day after they already did. I do think he can earn this contract but I just hate deals like this when they are in a contract year and all of a sudden they just produce way more than usual and for some reason only that 1 season is all it takes to get paid.

Edit: Forgot to add that I'm glad one of the core forwards finally signed for 8 years though

Going to be awkward when he drops back to an 80-90 point pace now that he's got his contract.

I like Willy though and hope he continues firing on all cylinders. He was going all-out in the playoffs and is better than Marner in those situations.

Still, I think it's time to accept the Leafs have thrown their chances in the coming 3-4 years unless their prospect development is exceptional. Yes, CapFriendly allows you to put a team around this expensive core but those teams aren't winning a cup when other contenders have optimized their contracts.

Individually these players are good but as a core they aren't made for the playoffs.
