So, I just saw Button commenting on the signing, he said after what’s paid to 34, 16, 88, 91, and 44 there will be 1.8 million on average to fill out the roster, 1.8 per player, who’s filling out the roster at those numbers, riddle me that Batman……….

When you've changed everything about the roster except the core, you inevitably have to look at the core at some point.

They're good players but it's not the right mix.

4 Patrick Kane's isn't as well rounded as Toews, Kane, Hossa, Sharp for example.
100%.

This team lives and dies by the core. I still think they’re good enough to get it done, but certainly the mix could be better. My confidence is going as well as time goes on.

It's possible we gun hard for Hanifin this summer and really scrape the bottom of the barrel next season to ensure we have a player like him locked up for our d core.

And if we re-sign JT for anything like the numbers I see people tossing out I will end it all. 4x2 is reasonable but I'd still rather give him 1 year deals until the end and squeeze him every time. We know he doesn't want to be anywhere else and if he wants to move his family for an extra million after he's made over 100 go ahead don't let the door hit ya on the way out.
No way they’ll be able to afford a D man of Hanifin’s caliber, hell they moght not be able to afford giving Benoit a raise………

To me it seems Insane that "We Can and We Will" in Toronto is the game plan going forward no matter how little results it has delivered as Leafs are among the least successful teams in a Salary Cap World.

The recent expansion Vegas Knights won the Stanley Cup and even Seattle in only their 2nd season have recorded more playoff wins in a single year than Toronto has in the last 20 years since the Cap was instituted.

It amazing to think when Matthews and Nylander's new deals kick in next year Leafs will have 4 of the top 11 highest paid players in the league all on a single team.

I guess fundamentally I don’t agree we’ve just tried to the same thing year after year. I mean, yes, obviously, the core remains the same, but our teams over the past 8 years have still been quite different from one another.

That said, I’m not saying you don’t reach a point where a core change makes the most sense. But I reject the idea we’re just doing the same thing every year

They remind me of the Cowboys and Jays. Good regular season team and early playoff exit.

JT could but who knows what JT is in two years? If he wants closer to Bertuzzi money you have to let him walk because most of the money has to go towards the D. If we give him $3m, we would have had him for 8x$10m. LOL.
Tre’s psychology is you don’t let expensive talent leave, even if it means paying far more than their worth……..

Does Nylander have a NMC for this season?

No, only a limited NTC. The Leafs were holding all the cards just like they were with Marner before July 1, 2023. Unfortunately, this is what they did with those cards:

Did I mention I love Nylander and still think this was a massive mistake?

That's what I've been preaching. Florida tried and failed twice, made one of the biggest trades in recent memory, and went to the finals.

A team like Tampa kept their core in tact, but they at least showed promise going to the SCF a few years before winning it all.

Whatve the Leafs done? Tried and failed with 0 significant changes. Rinse and repeat 7 times and here we are going on 8.

I can't think of any teams that continue to be as stupid as the Leafs in this regard. Even the 2000s-2010s Sharks who I loved to dunk on, were closer to Tampa than to Toronto.

There's nothing to suggest their group would've improved though either. Cup windows are short in this league. What has this group done in 7 years to show any indication they'll figure it out in year 8 or 9 or whenever? What's the definition of insanity?
People have to stop bringing up Florida as a model to building a team based on that one trade. Let's not forget that Florida had a middling season and only made the playoffs on the last weekend because Pittsburgh lost to a terrible team in Chicago. Then, they had the great fortune to have Bobrovsky go on a historical, magical goaltending display that carried the team to the Final.

What if Tre isn’t interested in Marner ?

I think Marner could be hard balled.

If Marner is re-signed then it’s clear the team doesn’t want to win, and is happy just overpaying their forwards.

Also worth mentioning that despite winning the President's trophy Florida the year prior and failing in the playoffs they made major changes that included trading their leading scorer coming off a 116 point season Huberdeau that finished 2nd to only McDavid in scoring, moving a soft winger for Matt Tkachuk who was a force in last years playoffs.

Florida made dramatic changes to their core, while Leafs continue to double down, now simply at higher costs for the same unsuccessful core 4 with Rielly that nearly got swept by Florida last year.

Unsuccessful teams with disappointing results make changes addressing weaknesses in an effort to change the end results, while other teams do the same things over and over again, hoping for different results..
We had a soft player who led the team in points last year who should have been traded, but thanks to Dubas, he couldn't be.

Well, then, your suggestion would be to nit dign Willie or Mitchy, and ad 2 very good $6m wingers or dmen and we would be better?
A better allocation of the cap would give them a better shot at winning a Cup.

They'll free up some money in the next two years so we’ll have to wait to see if they can build a contender.

Another issue that no one really talks about, but is the core good enough to even build around?

But I don't think you can ignore the fact that they won the President's Trophy the year before.

And they accomplished more in those 2 months than the Leafs have in 7 years

How could you possibly know that external factors play more of a role than internal ones? You’re speculating as is everyone else.

Our core is not far from our primary issue. They have disproportionate expectations to other stars in the league, and our depth, due to their disproportionate salaries. They hold up in the regular season, but they do not in the playoffs and not sure how anyone can argue a otherwise.

You can attribute that to playing great teams if you want, and it’s definitely a fair argument. But great players find a way to still perform as we have seen time and time again in this league. Underdogs find a way to win games. And even then we weren’t always the underdog in our series.

33% of the top 12 paid players are Leafs. In a 32 team league. 1 playoff series win. Toronto fans love the deal.

I don't think we need to say any more Mess.

A bunch of junk players. Now go out and buy a Nylander Jersey you stupid consumers.

7.5M is a lot of money for a 35 year old UFA. Do you think Tavares gets 7.5M on his next contract?

On a 35 year old contract, it doesn't matter if the contract is front-loaded - the cap hit will count even if he retires.

So what your saying here is in year 8 he won’t be good enough to get a 7.5 million contract but we’re gonna pay him 11.5?
