Because it was that Marner contract that messed this whole thing up.

You got that right. The winger that now gets closing in on double the amount of money to Nylander. All while getting less goals and getting 1st line minutes with Matthews. Nylander sitting there getting 88% of Marners point totals, 25% more goals and thinking you want to pay me half of that? GTFOH is what Nylander is thinking and rightfully so.

Why is this thread 90 percent Marner lol.

Because the overpaid poster boy that will endorse whatever will throw money his way makes way to much money for what he does. Remember this past season from the second line Nylander puts up 88% of the point totals of Marner. 25% additional actual goals. Demonstrates ability to actually gain a freaking zone and has legit pull away speed and a shot.

If I am Nylander, I am going for my 10mil or telling them to eat one. It's that simple, Marner will cry that he is as good as Matthews and chew the cap so who the heck actually gives a F.

Anger is displaced. The GM didn't have to pay him that amount, he chose to.
It's always been a weird sentiment here blaming the player for the GM's mistakes.
It has been a long time but from what I recall it seems like Dubas was dug in on negotiations and willing to let him hold out into the season before Shanny blinked and walked into the negotiations as "good cop" and a deal reportedly got done soon after that...?

They're all at fault. Marner holding out of training camp because he thinks he deserves Matthews money. Dubas and his cowardice giving into the demands. The Marner contract was a f*** up that will hamper this team until the end of Marner's new contract.

I don't recall but I don't doubt that they all had a part to play.

Not sure what Marner was thinking and he didn't really hold out, he missed a day off ice as I recall.
He took less money at a longer term which would lead you to believe he wasn't looking for Matthews money.

Had Dubas taken his initial offer of 8.5x8 none of this would have been an issue.

Even signing Marner before Matthews would have eliminated thinking he deserved Matthews money, whether that is true or not.

The bolded, not directed solely at you, is what is the problem with a lot of things here. People believe they know what people think and it gets repeated enough that it gets treated as fact.

No it will hamper us on his next contract as well. He's not taking a paycut. It is the Dubas gift that keeps on giving. The good thing is JT will be off the books.

Pretty sure that's what he said.

This whole Nylander, Marner, Matthews contract talk is so exhausting.
Amen to that.
They're really isn't anything else to discuss though and there is no chance I'm going to put my head down and work all day.

No, it's really just on Dubas.

It was up to Dubas to advocate for the organization, and he failed. He bent to their contract demands, and now we reap what he sowed.

I cant blame any of the players for simply getting as much as they could, despite not lining up with any kind comparables. It's not their job to police salaries within the org.

-------------------------

If I had it my way, we would re-sign Willy around 9m, then move Marner. This would give us cap space to keep Bertuzzi and would also allow us to make a splash on D.

Bertuzzi - Matthews - Nylander
Knies - XXX - Domi

Tavares moves on or signs cheap to be a winger eventually, and Marner is dealt.

It really has sounded like Lindholm wants to move on.

They could sign Nylander to a double digit, and they'd only have 2 double digits, and both making less than marner. Long term Kadri's deal is an issue, but for now he's just Flames Tavares, at 4mm less.
Maybe we can swing a deal for Lindholm and Hanifin or Andersson from Calgary.
Move JT to the wing:

Bertuzzi-Matthews-Marner
Tavares-Lindholm-Domi

Yes, I’m sure that it’s lost on many just how much people actually expose their inner psyche with boring, mundane conversation.

Its just amazing when you think about it.

Dubas thought 8 years @ $8.5 mil was too high for Marner when he countered with 8 years @$7.5 mil and then he agrees to 6 years @$10.9 mil and gives up 2 years of free agency at the same time.

Matthews offers him a 3 year bridge deal at $9 mil putting a price on his RFA years, before locking into his next deal with 1 year of RFA remaining, but nope Dubas prefers 5 years at $11.6 mil offering that as 4 X RFA years and buying only a single year and walking him right up to free agency now. 3 years @ $9 + 5 years @ $11.6 would have locked AM up for 8 years coming out of his ELC.

That is a $5 mil dollar over payment mistake combined, which means you don't need to dump Marleau, and your 1st round pick claiming Lou Lam left you in a bad spot, and would have also had Mitch and Auston locked up for 8 years.

With Willy he forces him to miss the first 3 months on a holdout and then gives him everything he wants anyways on 6 year deal @$7.5 mil.

How badly could a soooo called NHL GM botch things up soooo badly?

All of those mistakes sadly are now impacting the future contracts of WN, and MM and AM going forward.

How could anyone that puts themselves in Willy's shoes POV now that his point production is similar to all his 3 X $11 mil teammates not also want a # in the 10's. Now with a real GM however he seems to be holding the line and not feeling compelled to compound previous mistakes.

I personally would not be giving Nylander his $10.5 mil ask, but I would be finding a team to trade with that would be willing to and then do a sign and trade to get his new team the 8th year and Leafs the most value in return.
There won't be. Let his agent go looking and when he can't find any, he will be forced to lower his demands or continuing to wait out the Leafs. Buckle up, this negotiation is going to take months IMO.

That's assuming Nylander would sign with the new team.
IMO, if he doesn't like how things are going he will just go UFA and pick his destination

I don't disagree with the whole psyche aspect of this place, that's always cracked me up.
Why are you here though if you find it 'boring, mundane conversation'?
