Matthews has had so many injuries that I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest he take less than market value if he was fully healthy.

Matthews: $11
Marner: $10
Nylander: $9

I personally think that's what Marner is worth. Small playmaker wingers don't make big elite franchise center money in my world.

He'll make less total $$ on a 7x10m than 8x9M to re-sign. His agent can ask all he wants but BT can't fold on term + AAV + adding the Toronto tax like Dubas did. Not if they want to build a competitive team over the next half decade.

He's also underproduced compared to Marner and isn't a C like Tavares. Marner is an elite Pk'er as well. Not saying his contract is team friendly but he should make more than Willy.

I don't see why 8x8.8-9M isn't good for both sides. It's a couple hundred grand to figure out.
I imagine if it doesn’t look like they’ll get a deal done with the Leafs, his agent will try to force a trade before the trade deadline which would let the acquiring team sign him to 8 x 10.

100% reasonable from Willy. I'd say the gap in ability/performance/value between Willy and Marner is about the same as the gap between Marner and Matthews, but in their last contracts, this wasn't at all reflected in the salaries:

Matthews - $11.64 mil AAV
=> $0.74 mil gap
Marner - $10.9 mil AAV
=> $3.94 mil gap
Nylander - $6.96 mil AAV

Nylander took a haircut so Matthews/Marner could get PAID, with insane AAVs for RFAs with player-friendly terms. Crazy to ask Willie to take a haircut again, if all that extra $$ is just gonna be vacuumed up by Matthews/Marner again.

Here's the cap hit, for next season, of every forward making $8.5 mil+:
- MacKinnon: $12.6 mil AAV
- McDavid: $12.5
- Panarin: $11.64
- Matthews: $11.64
- Pasta: $11.25
- Tavares: $11
- Marner: $10.9
- Huberdeau: $10.5
- Barkov: $10
- Eichel: $10
- Kopitar: $10
- Seguin: $9.85
- Gaudreau: $9.75
- Kucherov: $9.5
- M. Tkachuk: $9.5
- Point: $9.5
- Ovie: $9.5
- Stone: $9.5
- Benn: $9.5
- Rantanen: $9.25
- Backstrom: $9.2
- Barzal: $9.15
- Kaprizov: $9
- Skinner: $9
- Crosby: $8.7
- Larkin: $8.7
- Laine: $8.7
- Draisaitl: $8.5
- Stamkos: $8.5
- PLD: $8.5
- Zibby: $8.5
- Horvat: $8.5
- Forsberg: $8.5

I'd say equivalent, slight hometown discounts for all of Matthews/Marner/Nylander would be:
- Matthews: $11.5 mil (4th highest paid forward, 3rd highest paid centre)
- Marner: $10 mil (tied for 8th highest paid forward, 4th highest paid winger in the league)
- Nylander: $8.5 mil

The NHLPA are the players......that's what the P stands for.

The guys that are on the executive board are typically not guys like Matthews and McDavid it's guys like Kerfoot, Eberle and Tom Wilson. Those are the guys that lose money when the "superstars" take a bigger slice of the pie.

So if a guy like Kerfoot pressures Matthews to essentially take money out of his own pocket, then a Harvard education is highly overrated.
I would argue it trickles down to Kerfoot level players, which is why he got 3.5.

The tier below him I believe gets hurt by having to take league minimum or just above to stay in the league.

It seems counter intuitive but like most Unions/Corporations, rarely do they bottom guys figure into the plan.

I'd say perfectly reasonable, fair value for Matthews/Marner/Nylander would be:
- Matthews: $11.8 mil (3rd highest paid forward in the league)
- Marner: $10 mil (tied for 8th highest paid forward, 4th highest paid winger in the league)
- Nylander: $8.5 mil

Matthews should definitely not be the highest paid forward in the league, and Marner definitely shouldn't be the highest paid winger. $8.5 is less than Willie could get as a UFA, but not WAY less - it's a similar "hometown discount" to what Matthews/Marner would be taking, if all 3 were to go out and maximize for nothing but $$$ on the open market.

It's Willie's turn to get paid, his agent should be given the green light to start talking to other teams about an extension. We needed to change the core anyway, Shanny didn't have the balls so it's the players that have to force their hand.

At the very most I would only go a million over that for each of them if it was up to me, but really I don't see any of them taking just a million more than the amounts you listed, especially not Marner since that's already the amount of his current contract. I don't see how Nylander justifies asking for more than 9.5

So now it has come out via Chris Johnston that Willy is taking a hard stance on 10.5m.

This circus has to end, enough is enough, time for this guy to have a new home and we move on from this nonsense.

When Mitch is due if he pulls the same crap move on from him too.
A point per game player signed as a ufa in Toronto for 11 mil.

That's ROYALLY messed up every negotiation since.

Nylanders like "I'm coming from 40 goals (which Tavares had never reached at the time) and 87 points. And the cap will be up significantly next year. How is 10.5 anything other than a pro-team discount?"

Fair point, hypothetical Nylander...

There's a higher chance I have a threesome with Sofia Vergara and Salma Hayek than a chance those guys take a pay cut.

9 million for Skinner? Is that a typo?

Nevermind, I was thinking of the goalie. Still horrible, but I remember that

Bad contracts are plentiful in NHL history and there will be more.

Winning teams don't keep being stupid and should eventually clean things up.

GM's that know what they are doing do not get burnt 4 times in a year and a bit.

Because generally speaking, the NHLPA cares more about the top of the league than the bottom. They constantly want to push for higher salaries to become the norm - hence they dislike discounts.

I think they have no interest in there being unused money, but I'm sure they'd be happier making more themselves than giving it all to the stars who get more perquisites.

When is this CBA up?

Bet there are some teams that wouldn't mind a doover.

Not defending Tavares here but being regarded as a stud and being a center and dealing with an inexperienced GM added up to a bad contract for us.

Same GM following that up with 3 more overpaid contracts is killing us.

Good players but the gravy train has to stop sometime and as someone else posted basing new contracts on previous awful contracts is bad business.

Yeah 10.5 is just too much. Hope he comes down to a reasonable 9.5 but if not gotta start shopping him. Wonder what is Matthews asking for.... Surely Nylander can't be asking for 10.5 if Matthews ask is reasonable, but who knows.

If these guys had the balls on the ice that they have when it comes to contract negotiations, we'd have 3 or 4 cups under Dubas. They have zero shame.

Tavares got: 13.84% of cap.

Nylander's ask: 11.9% of projected cap.
