Rumor: Nylander like Matthews unextended. Nothing to see here.

"The NHLPA told Nylander the contract should be completed by 4:30 ET, but it wasn’t until right around then that Nylander, back home in Sweden, and Gross, stationed in New Jersey, called Dubas.

There was one last full-court press to spark a deal.

The two sides reiterated their positions. For the first time, however, they found common ground toward an agreement. Gross declined to go into further details on what exactly changed."

Seems like Dubas offered more money on what they settled for, unless you have a different source.
Fine with what you provided.
Don’t think it matters much now

Hingsight is well awesome but I really think Dubas should have let CBJ offersheet marner and taken the 4 first rounders as was reported by some media outlets.

We would have done so much with that with Nylander already inked at 7 AAV.

or signed marner to when he was looking for 8 x 8 before tavares signing and bumping marner's production lol

Oh well...
What is funny or sad is that Marner was not signing any offersheets. Had he, it would probably have been a worse deal that he got from Dubas and we could have matched or taken the 4 firsts.

I believe NYI and CBJ wouldn't really do the offer sheet thing because he wasn't willing to sign it at 7 years.

Lots of teams have won without this particular group of 3-4 players that everyone loves to fawn over.

1 series win...

Makes me really appreciate that group we had in the early 2000's, 2 conference final appearances...that's the highlight of my 35 years on this planet.
Especially the 2002 run when Sundin missed most of the games. It was a full blue collar effort led by Roberts and co. which what really fans loved for.

Dubas blew the negotiations from the get-go. Offering $11mx7/8 (rumoured) at the end of June pretty much sealed his fate. There was no going back from that offer other than lowering the term. I guess Kyle flunked Contract Negotiations 101.

It's f***ing over Brad at this point.

I always thought his cap made sense, most of his D all came in under 5M, Weegar the recent acquisition signed more recently so had some more expensive comparables.

His forwards contracts made sense and Markstrom was at one point the best UFA goalie on the UFA market and would have gotten the same contract from somewhere else if it wasn't Calgary.

The only odd standout was Coleman but he came off 2 back to back cups, ripe for an overpayment plus as we're seeing now, no one wants to be in Calgary apparently.

He's probably looking at our cap structure and thinking "wtf" - Kampf at 2.4M probably wouldn't have been the end of the world in Calgary but here where a few take up so much of the cap, it stands out more.

Send him home to Calgary for Lindholm if Lindholm will sign an extension at an average under 9.

Nylander out and a solid middle class of Lindholm, Bertuzzi (healthy) and Domi all re-signed might be the better balance we need. But hopefully they all come to their senses and just get into a post-Tavares world intact.

I would value Lindholm at 9M quite easily because of his ability to play centre.

7 Years x $10 million on any other team in free agency (good luck) = $70 million taking you to age 34.

8 Years x $9.25 million on the Leafs = $74 million taking you to age 35.

Why is this so complicated?
71m is 8.88m x 8 years for me.

Max Signing bonuses, NMC with 10 team can be traded to clause and he's with the team he wants and on a contender.

Still more than he would get outside and it's a sweet deal imo.

Why is it so complicated to grasp that both of those are gross overpayments for a player of this caliber?

Yeah, exactly. Point made. The extra 8th year covers the decline into age 34-35 where he would not be getting big money. This isn't the second contract where the team is buying prime years.

I'm just outlining how his ask of Toronto is unreasonable given what he would be looking for in an open market, the term another team would be able to give him, vs a less sexy number that yields more dollars over one extra year.

So after Matthews signs put the focus on Nylander.

Matthews shows whether he is in it for winning or Matthews. Nylander to follow suit.

It's the perfect solution if Willy won't compromise. Lindholm doesn't want to play for a Calgary, Willy will play for whoever pays him what he wants. Plus we can move Tavares to the wing finally.

You got to find a team willing to pay his ask and he is willing to extend with. Willie for Lindholm does not change anything for Calgary if Willie won't extend there. Even so, why not just overpay Lindholm if you are Calgary and call it a day ?

Podcast now with Friedman saying Nylander doesn't want to be the only one to take less.

So if Matthews is announced at 14-14.5M x 3-5 years, okay yea, I can see him saying screw this and pushing for the 10-10.5M x 8 year deal

If Matthews comes in at 12.95-13.25M range for 5-8 years...I could see him coming down to 8.8-9M x 8 years and then we just have to give him a lot of high salary years in the first few years and likely 92% signing bonuses.

(My own thoughts on that contract structure type stuff)
It probably shocked the hell out of him the last time when he saw the Matthews/Marner contract. He thought he was doing well making more than Pastrnak until Dubas blew the doors off with Matthews/Marner.

I don’t blame him for saying hell no this time. Just not here. 2 double digit wingers us not good. One winger, and one D is fine.

If negotiations go poorly, we could always just own rental Nylander, enjoy one more cheap year of the player, eliminate his ability to earn the 8th year on any contract and then just re-spend the $9 million or so earmarked to him on anything we want come July 1, 2024.

The expectation shouldn't be that you want to stay in Toronto, but somehow extract a premium from Toronto that you wouldn't get elsewhere, and then also command max term you can't get anywhere else.

Willie knew 16 and 34 were going to break the bank but not the magnitude. That is why he started at Draisaitl money and refused to sign until the last minute. He battled for every red cent and still left almost a $4m gap.

Onus is on the team leadership to show their character.

Matthews is the player at bat right now.

Leafs near term future depends on their leadership beginning with Matthews not Nylander.

Nashville is rebuilding and should have plenty of cap space to pay Willie. Pretty sure Willie will love Nashville. Start with Askarov and get a deal done.
