Seems that players don't want to be in Calgary, but if his hand wasn't forced, he would've built a very strong team in Calgary.

Imagine what he may have actually been able to accomplish if more UFAs were interested in Calgary and less players had Calgary on their no trade lists

This is exactly the problem. Teams will sign him for $9M as an UFA, but no one wants to pony up assets and pay him $9M.

We don't know that.

But the bigger problem would be who wants to pony up assets and pay $11M now and likely be looking at $13 in two years for Marner?

For anyone who would rather keep Willy than Mitch (myself included) the bad news is that the team would probably get a fair bit more for Willy, so he's more likely to be traded.

Then Meier liked to stay and signed for 8.8.

Willy says he wants to stay and is about the team but then turns around and says as long as I get 9.5 to 10m.

First time around Willy was all about Willy and Dubas caving in then cost us dearly with Matthews and Marner.

Should have traded him back then and things would now be very different in Leaf land.

As others have said with things so tight all over he needs to be dealt but it is very doubtful the return would be much.

Tree is stuck between a rock and a hard place here thanks to Dubas.

He still got Willy on a decent contract. The problem was signing Tavares, which was what cost us dearly with Matthews and Marner.

I don't think you'd be gotting an asset like Pesce back. Basically think an 4ish million 2nd pairing D man and a 3-4 mil top 9 forward

Pretty much. Losing an asset like Willy for nothing is border line criminal. Treliving should be fired if that happens

I think part of this is premeditated:

Nylander's agent is asking for quite a bit, and TOR's Management team uses this as a way out, and a way to not look like the bad guy in this situation.

Just speculation.

Yes - the issue is that Necas had 40ish point every season prior so I don't know if it's a break out season or a fluke.

Nylander has a longer track record of being a productive player.

Necas shooting % last year was totally in line.
Is he a natural centre or a winger that plays a little centre?

I'm responding to the 'sign for 9 and trade' idea. Without signing him first, it's one year at $7 for Willy or two years at $11 for Mitch, which is even more in Willy's favor.

I'd rather see us trade Mitch, but I'm afraid it's less likely.
