Its June 30th and still no marner trade. It is all but guaranteed 1 of 2 things as far as I am concerned

1) Nylander is traded
OR
2) Leafs are gonna be a JOKE at least for the next few years

No Marner trade and no signed Matthews + Nylander to actually realistic deals = joke for many years pretty much.

What do you have if Matthews and Nylander leave?
JT and Marner? JT is ending it off, it's over that way. That means we need some new star from out of nowhere with low cap because I assume no matter what Matthews aint coming cheap.

How is that our players are so good we cant keep them because of the cap... yet we can't beat anyone?

Leafs have been drinking their own "koolaid" for quite a while.

that said, i do understand nylander's ask. Since the habs series Willy has shown up to play in the playoffs while marner hasn't.

if people are going to use marner's regular season stats i guess Willy is saying he scored 40 goals in regular season and has better outcome on the ice in playoffs for his minutes; while using matthews/marner contracts to point to.

Dubas is the no1 person to be blamed IMO; but he isn't here anymore so Tre gotta do whats best for the franchise. He should have traded marner by now. I would have preferred Willy at 9 AAV and use Marner's cap space to round out roster and find two forwards that in "total" can put up same points that marner does and have more depth in the line up and more oomph.

Marner is the luxury we just cannot afford IMO. But since it is june 30th it seems more likely that Nylander will be traded since he only has limited ntc. if we sign nylander to 10+ we will continue to have 3 players with double digit cap hit on the roster after 2 years of 4 players with double digit cap hits (after JT is off the cap). That will be terrible management IMO

It will be a wee bit funny if he signs an extension next week to stay in Toronto

It really doesn't seem as if either side is treating things like a ticking clock despite the media framing of things

Quite possible but based on the last contract holdout and the fact that it is in his best interest to see what Matthews gets, I wouldn’t be expecting it anytime soon.

Do you think Carolina does Nylander for Pesce? If Nylander won't sign for what the Leafs are willing to pay they need to get something decent for him, you can't get hung up on getting exactly equal value because that's not likely to happen.

We'll find out one way or the other eventually.

But I certainly won't expect a trade to happen anytime for a few weeks at minimum.

This year in the playoffs
Nylander 4 goals 10 points -4
Marner 3 goals 14 points +7

But yeah Nylander brought it and Marner didn’t show up……

Marner likes to light it up in blowout games to pad his stats. It’s like hitting 15 home runs a season in the bottom of the 9th in 8-0 games

Marner vs Nylander:

Shooting: Nylander
Passing: Marner
Defence: Marner
Insane Contract Demands: Marner
Playing through contact: Nylander

I'd personally keep Marner because he's the better overall talent to be part of a cup-worthy core. Nylander is the more complete offensive talent however his defensive play leaves a lot to be desired.

So far, the Leafs have 2 players good enough for a cup-contending core (Matthews, Marner). While I like playoff Rielly, he's not Piets/Chara/Keith/Doughty/Makar/Hedman level. I'd rather the Leafs have a guy on that level than just hope the Leafs can get by like the Pens did on those back-to-back cups.

If Nylander can get the Leafs a d-man to balance out the pairings ala Lindholm for the Bruins they should look into it. Slavin is who I'd want, or Pesce + Necas.

Rielly-Schenn
D from Nylander trade-McCabe
Brodie-Liljegren

Giordano can be the 7th d-man.

If we have to trade him try and get a nice package like Winnipeg got for Dubois.
It might not be immediate star for star quality but it can blossom with an upside like Knies.

Restructure so you can build a line with Matthews and a line with Marner.

Then when JT is off the cap, we only have 2 high paid forwards and balance down the line.

Divert money to making the D better, bigger, mobile.

Lol sure….
When one of these 2 guys was on the ice 5 on 5 his team out scored the opponents. When the other was on the ice the leafs we the ones that were out scored.

I’ll let you figure out which one is which.

But hey don’t let facts get in the way of your narrative.

Similar ages and contract situations. I think i would prefer to take my chances with pesce though. Pesce has a reasonable contract this season and we can sign someone like kane, taresenko, duchene, etc to replace most of nylander brings offense wise.

Yes. +/- is a great way to evaluate players. Marner is a solid two way player no doubt, but is invisible when times get tough. I not huge on Nylander either, but he has more game breaking speed than Marner does, and it shows in the playoffs when space is tight

Marner having those games is why they were blowouts numbnuts.

Before I tear this quote down, I'd wana say that Tavares being traded away is a good thing.. won't happen tho

Now, you honestly can't compare Vegas (city with how many year of hockey history) to Toronto, a city that has been hockey mad for shit ton years.. (nothing to do with winning cup, just having hockey as its culture)
Then you have a local boy 1st round pick coming home...

No shit Vegas would drop him, wtf would Tavares really mean to a city that cares more about gambling and casinos than a game with putting a black rubber puck in the net...

Again, moving tavares would be key, but unlikely due to the situation Vegas will never find themselves in.... How many 1st overal star players come from Vegas? Will Vegas even have an nhl team in 50 years? I bet you they won't. Toronto still will.

I completely disagree with you (except the probably not being traded thing) because Tavares likely has negative value and is overly obvious anyone who watches Leafs and understands simple math and is not a biased flaming fanboy like you lol

...consider this post, completely untorn and prestine

Thanks for trying lol

Did you even read my post?
I said trading tavares would be a good thing.
I was talking about your quote about Vegas having no qualms ditching Tavares if he was on their team and I explained why it's different....
How am I a fan boy here?

I think you need to try harder

I don’t know if this management has the ability to look ahead but this (like Dubas forcing their hand) could be the start of what we need to change moving forward.

People say it took Yzerman/MacKinnon/Stamkos years to win but forget they had to take a step back to move forward. Detroit drafted high with Yzerman to get Primeau, Colorado moved on from Duchene/ROR and got Makar, Tampa drafted Drouin who became Sergechev.

Use this time to retool by moving Nylander if his demands are high, foster development of Knies/Lily/Woll and the players we get for Nylander and set yourself up to be done with Tavares and his 11 million in 2 years.
Put small pieces in and around the team to come back stronger.

Stop trying to build a UFA team around guys taking up half the cap. Doesn’t work.

The idea that he gives a hoot about AMs next deal scares me. Another winger who wants to base his income on what the #1 C on the club is earning vs the other wingers in the league that actually play like him.
