Rumor: Nylander like Matthews unextended. Nothing to see here.

Amazing how you ignore that the NBA has blown MLB right out of the water almost as much as the NFL has.

The theory was that A) we would have won a Cup or two by now, and then B) we have to live with the last two years of his deal. At least we get to do B!

Death to soccer players, basketball players, baseball players, cricket players, and NFL QBs!

I need to go print some signs.
I ignore the professional soccer leagues, NBA, NASCAR and it has nothing to do with blowing out of water.

Heck, SEC football and baseball blow the NHL out of the water.

How about the big four
NFL
SEC
MLB
NHL

Tavares has a full NMC. How many times do we have to say this.

Here's the reality. Treliving didn't sign NMC. If Tavares is even tradeable (which is in doubt at this point)
Eg: Tavares waived to Kraken for dump/7th rnd pick/future considerations, this should be one of teams top priorities to culminate such trade... only than approach Tavares and ask, beg, plead, guilt, force, explain, or straight up tell Tavares he is no longer part of new managements plans for the Leafs future (aka totally destroying teams chances of getting better this offseason) and he'll have a choice to stay or go...

...but just because he has a full NMC doesn't mean he has to be on the Leafs roster come this October...

I guarantee you Vegas would cut bait with Tavares... best for TEAM, no problem at all 👐

Time to light up those pajamas Treliving... don't worry they're polyester, so they'll burn real quick lol

Comps are based on cap percentage, not dollars. His contract was less cap % than Pasternak took, but more than Ehlers.

But yes, he ended up right at market value when all was said and done - that offer was there the whole time I believe.

Second contracts for immediate comps:

David Pasternak - 8.89%
William Nylander - 8.76%
Nikolaj Ehlers - 8.00%
Forsberg at 8.22% is a much closer performance comp than Pasta. And again, that 8.76% is based on 6 full seasons paid, not the 5 2/3 he played. The cap is the impact on the team. not the rate the guy earned. He was compensated at more like a 9.22% ($7.3xM per) rate based on the actual time under contract. Willie should have been paid $4.6M for his shortened year 1 but he wasn't.

That's well above market value because 20g-61p in 82 is a long ways from 34g-70p in 75. I doubt he was offered much more than $6.5M over the summer. Cap adjusted Forsberg would have been $6.53M. Anyways there no argument for him being lowballed or underpaid.

Nobody is taking Tavares at $11m, just like nobody is taking Karlsson at $11.5m. Sure you might save enough to sign Orlov but you are left with a big hole at #2C. IMO the best time to trade JT is after his bonus is paid out July 1, 2024 after which he is owed 910K in base salary. You might even get something for him.

Nylander is a couple points shy of coming off of a 40 goal/90 point season playing the vast majority of the season on the second line.

On the open market he'd EASILY get 10+. I see no reason why he'd take a discount while the other star players on the team fight tooth and claw for every single solitary last penny.

This culture problem seeps through the team. Why the hell would Nylander take a discount when he knows it will just get added into the pockets of Matthews and Marner?

The lack of movement in the NHL, flat cap, buyouts would suggest there isn’t really a landscape for Nylander making $10 million.

It just makes me so sad to see 30 pages of debate on this subject.

I am old enough to remember watching the last Cup win in 67.

Since that time to now Keon,Sittler/Mac/Tiger/Salming,Vaive,Gilmour,Clark,Roberts,Cujo,Sundin just to name a few that I cheered for and we all loved.

Now I am spending time debating these greedy heartless asshole chokers getting how many more millions while only really liking Reilly.

Time for a coffee, and making it Irish.
Yup.

1-5 - Tkachuk, Rantanen, Kucherov, Pastrnak and Marner right? Those would be the top 5, no particular order?

Strong case that Nylander is the 6th best RW in the league? Should be a good return coming for him if he's moved.

Yeah and any team that will do it is not giving him huge signing bonuses + NMC. Nylander will be in for a rude surprise if he's looking at 10M+ on the open market.

Ten million is too much but GM’s know the cap is going up after this coming season just like we all do. And Nylander’s extension wouldn’t kick in till then.

You're probably correct re: trade at this point but maybe a team that wants to compete next year and strikes out on free agency, might be interested in Tavares but who knows...

O'Reily easily fills his skates at roughly half cap...

I love Nylander and would like to keep him, but I’m so tired of people using even strength production as their main argument

Guess what, scoring on the powerplay results in 1 goal. Scoring at even strength results in 1 goal. They both result in one goal.

We’ve literally lost countless series due to an anemic powerplay yet people consistently discount it when discussing players. I’ll take a powerplay merchant like Kucherov any day
Not discounting the PP, but it is a different situation, and is not where players spend most of their time. Top players may spend as much as 20% of their ice time on the PP, but most spend virtually none. Additionally, if you're looking at line combinations, they don't exist on the PP. If trying to compare players, they are used very differently on the PP from at even strength, and must be treated differently.

Those are the same reasons that +/- doesn't include PP goals.

Curious about what you believe the N and the M stand for in the NMC acronym?

Anyone else find the Jonas Siegel article on the Athletic on the Matthews/Nylander contract talks totally embarrassing? Spinning 14 million as a discount for AM. Comical.

Sigel is a moron and a dubas shill. he will to any lengths to paint his boy into a good light.

i can guarantee you this same hack who is saying 14M is a discount, will write an article down the road on how bad treliving was in handing out overpayments, and dubas would have done a lot better.

Do not listen to anything Seigel, Johnston and especially mirtle vomit out there. they are shills and fake people

Couldn't agree more with this. I'm basing my decision off the assumption that Nylander is getting 10M, I'd rather take Marner at 12 vs Nylander at 10, although both deals would suck. To me if I could put a $ value on their difference in production, I'd say about $2.5.

There certainly is not a $4 mil difference per season for the past 4 years since they signed their new deals.

Marner's last 4 seasons at $10.9 mil AAV
Regular Season Totals ... 266 games .. 101 goals .. 229 assists .. 330 points.
Playoff Season Totals ....... 30 games ........ 5 goals ..... 25 assists ..... 30 points.

Nylander's last 4 seasons at $6.96 mil AAV
Regular Season Totals ... 282 games .. 122 goals .. 146 assists .. 268 points.
Playoff Season Totals ....... 30 games .... 14 goals ..... 15 assists ..... 29 points.

Before I tear this quote down, I'd wana say that Tavares being traded away is a good thing.. won't happen tho

Now, you honestly can't compare Vegas (city with how many year of hockey history) to Toronto, a city that has been hockey mad for shit ton years.. (nothing to do with winning cup, just having hockey as its culture)
Then you have a local boy 1st round pick coming home...

No shit Vegas would drop him, wtf would Tavares really mean to a city that cares more about gambling and casinos than a game with putting a black rubber puck in the net...

Again, moving tavares would be key, but unlikely due to the situation Vegas will never find themselves in.... How many 1st overal star players come from Vegas? Will Vegas even have an nhl team in 50 years? I bet you they won't. Toronto still will.

Its June 30th and still no marner trade. It is all but guaranteed 1 of 2 things as far as I am concerned

1) Nylander is traded
OR
2) Leafs are gonna be a JOKE at least for the next few years
