IF you trade Nylander who is going to drive your second line?

Tavares is finished and Mathews needs Marner by his side to produce.

Leafs will be a one line team if Willie is moved for a top defender, which is what they really need IMHO.

Tricky situation, Hanafin is the only legit top four available...
For the amount of money they make, Matthews and Marner can play on different lines and drive it themselves. If they can’t, why are you paying over 10 mil?

Knies-Matthews-new RW
Tavares-ROR or new center-Marner

Maybe you get a new winger + a D for Nylander.

Who can we get from WPG for Nylander?

Kyle Connor 1 for 1 swap?
Or Keller from Arizona. 5 years on his deal at 7.

The problem is we have traded away so many draft picks there is no center dep and no defenceman we havent drafted a defenceman since 2020

Yes he will get 9 mil
Not much they can do until JT’s contract expires and the cap goes up.

I think this is almost where the Leafs almost have to mark out Tavares as no longer a true member of the core who is overpaid and others can measure against his salary, but more like an N/A boat anchor. Yes he is on a legacy contract, but if you want to be a Leaf you're not referring to this contract as a benchmark for yours.

You see the conversation picking up steam on Real Kyper.
You're kinda proving why players like Matthews, Marner and Nylander should go after every dollar and every player friendly clause they can get. It's a business. And when you no longer have leverage, you're expendable and you will be treated like cattle.

He doesn’t really show up, though.

Winnipeg is a bad trading partner. Dubois, Scheifele, and Hellebuyck all want out, and they've had core guys want out before (eg Trouba).

They want guys with term. Look at the Dubois trade, they only took guys with multiple years of control. Unless Nylander agrees to a sign and trade, they would have virtually no interest.

And one year from free agency, you think Nylander is going to want to sign a long-term deal in Winnipeg?

They can drive a line, but there’s no players to drive.

If you replaced Matthews Marner and Nylander with McDavid, Draisauto, and RNH and moved them to AZ, no one would predict them to win a Cup. The D would still be slow and terrible, the bottom 6 would be blah.
The PP would improve.

I've been saying this for several years whenever the excuse of "they can't do it all by themselves" comes up. Well, they're paid like they do it all by themselves.

You don't trade him to Winnipeg unless he'll sign there. Ask him to find a team that will pay his ask and work out a deal.

Exactly this. No hard feelings. That extra 1-1.5M is what he needs to feel appreciated. Wish him well and move on. Thanks for the contributions to date.

He was a defensive liability in the playoffs, completely sheltered, these myths about the playoff warrior are strange. And last year against TB he woke up down 5-0, game over and potted two nothing goals to pad his “shows up in the playoffs” monitor. Man we exaggarate this guy. Now, he does “show up” here and there, rarely when it matters though and it can happen whenever, that’s how Bill rolls, nothing gets to him, that works both ways unfortunately.

Id like him to return, his talent alone makes up for his mental check out phases and bullshit defensive efforts. But, the gold rush is over and if he wants it all, get lost. Goes for everyone too, not just Bill.

if this is the case then it would be best to stop negotiating, revisit later in the season and then trade at the deadline to maximize his value

Willy is still the best chance to get best bang for the buck of the big four.
The difference in toi is significant enough.
He’s most capable of the four to create his own chance.
Moving him is a risky proposition.
The next 48 hours are gonna rock.
Also, I don’t get this ‘time is in their side argument’. FA starts in 24 hours or so.

Yeah let’s trade the only one of the core 4 that shows up in the playoffs. Smart decision making right here folks.

That ridiculous narrative needs to expire.

I wouldn't take what he said literally but he makes a valid point.

Nylander is a much better player now then he was a few years ago and over the last three years, he's put up PPG in the playoffs. He's managed to do that with less ice time than M&M, and without M or M as a linemate. Hell these last playoffs, Keefe in his infinite wisdom (bwahahahahahahaaaa) even took him off PP1 yet he kept on producing. My eye test also tells me that there were a number of games where we badly needed a goal, M&M looked like they were MIA and Nylander was the only one who hadn't given up and he was still buzzing out there creating chances.

In the playoffs over these last 3 seasons, Nylander has not been outplayed by M&M in the playoffs, in fact you could argue he's been the best out of the three of them so when you factor in cap hit, he's been by far the best playoff asset out of the three. If you have to move on from a core piece and you want to win in the playoffs, Nylander's not the guy you move.
