Maybe you should watch a few more Oilers games.

What you would have seen this year was a motivated McDavid.

Maybe we'll see that with some Leafs player?
Last 2 years McDavid really learned to flip the switch, especially late in the season and in the playoffs.

Just watching him you see the separation from every other player.
Agree completely. 150+ in today's game. Matthews career high is 106. Even if you want to factor in that PPG over 82, that's 119. McDavid is on a whole other level than the rest and he does it year after year. Matthews went from 106 to 85 while playing one more game in his 85 point year. Let me know when McDavid dips to 85 points before he's 37 years old lol.

Also, in the playoffs:

McDavid: 1.53 PPG
Matthews: 0.88 PPG

Matthews should not be mentioned in the same sentence as this guy.

Can you imagine Connor's next deal then?

The difference between McDavid and Matthews is indecent.

McDavid going to be first Max player?

I can see a $3mm difference between Matthews and Nylander ... and a $5mm difference between Matthews and McDavid.

If McDavid doesn't have a cup by the time he is a UFA my guess is he will not go for the max contract he will give the signing team discount. If we assume McJesus stays in Edmonton, given Drai is up for a massive increase they will have to find a way fit everyone.

Except for that abysmal Nurse contract and goalie situation (Campbell regression was big); I wonder how they will shape up in future. I actually thought the "Cup or Bust" comment from both McJesus/Drai was interesting. They weren't saying that they played well and deflect blame like the buds here do especially freakin marner; they actually took responsibility as leaders of the team.

They are in a hockey market.
Toronto is more an entertainment market and you can hide there.
What was it someone posted here the other day, marner is a "Celebrity"?

Seems inevitable that a divorce is coming between Nylander and the Leafs. He wants every penny and the leafs can’t give that to him.

If you view Nylander as anything but greedy, selfish, and apathetic, then you're probably his dad.

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. And just like his old man, Nylander is clearly not a leader or franchise player either. In fact, just the opposite.

He doesn't actually care about the game.

He's just in it because it's all he's ever known. Like the kid in school whose parents were scientists. Born gifted so they never had to study.

But still passed with a solid B.

God, I can only imagine the player Nylander could be if he actually gave a shit. He's uber-talented but EXTREMELY lazy. Even worse is his desire to avoid contact at all costs.

Nylander is a good player who sets a bad example.

A little more effort and he actually could be a superstar. If he really wanted he could be a leader too. Nylander just doesn't have those qualities in him I guess.

Even though he wants to get paid like he does.

Agreed McDavid is on another level from EVERY player in the league.

Interesting that McDavid went from 1.88 Pt/g to 1.54 back up to 1.57 pts/g dropping 0.34 pts/g . Matthews went from 1.45 pts/g to 1.15 pts/g, Matty dropped 0.30 pt/g year over year. Both dropped around the same # of pts/g season over season.

Maybe a fan hoping, more than an opinion based on science but the Leafs for the first time in a long time have two LW top 6's, they had bunting but no real other threat if Bunting was out, I think , again just fan speculation, that Matty, Mitch, JT and Willie will have career years or it could go the other way where Bert and Domi are taking away points?

Yeah McDavid is on another level, if people want to compare an Edmonton forward to Matty, I think Leon is a closer comparable.

Trade Proposal

To EDM
Nylander only cares about money

To TOR
McDavid on another level

;)
Requisite admonishment requires...
Dont you dare compare McDavid to Nylander.

....gosh...I was right....it does feel stupid to say shit like that. Maybe some people will now let me into their club.

Looking forward to this drama dragging out into training camp. Nylander is no stranger to that and it looks like Matthews will be right there along for the ride with him.

I don’t think they’ll be drama in camp since they both are signed for the season.
I mentioned this yesterday, maybe Nylander will sign his contract extension while the team is in Sweden. He’ll never have that opportunity again and they’ll have a couple of days before they play.

I have no idea if that means anything to him or not….summer thoughts.

When looking at games played and points its actually not even that close....

Leon stays healthy and has put up 4x 105+ pts since signing his 8.5 milly deal and a high of 128pts. Matthews has one 105 pt season and his next highest is 85.

The last 5 seasons Matthews has 225 goals and 410 pts....Leon 231 goals and 537 pts.

Playoffs are not even close with leon at 49 games 77 pts and Matthews 50 games 44 pts.

Leon has played more games but thats not his fault he stays healthy while our guy doesnt. Highest paid player eh? sheesh.

August 1st hot take:

Matthews will be signed before camp $13.? x 5(I think that "?" will be higher than 5). Nylander will not (what anyone who was around when he signed his last contract would have predicted the second he signed that contract).

Treliving, getting more and more visibly frustrated every time he's asked about Nylander's contract status over the course of the season will assure us that a deal "will get done".

It will not get done and Willie walks next July for nothing after the Leafs get bounced in the first round.

Coco says the wedding /golf tourney rumors
Mathews signs any day now
Between 3and 5 years

I guess i'm in a different boat than most here. I hate the soft core and their unwillingness to lay it on the line during the playoffs. If they're being greedy to the point where signing them is going to extend this awful cap allocation then to hell with them. I just can't see the type of improvement we'd need in the future to go deep in the playoffs with the imbalance our current cap structure demands.
Had we kept and added to a strong group of prospects that could fill top 6/4 roles on elc's it may have been possible but that potential was essentially crushed while Dubas was attempting to learn how to be an NHL GM.
