Rumor: Nylander like Matthews unextended. Nothing to see here.

"He’s going to get somewhere between $10 million and $11 million a season from somebody. It might be the Leafs. Or it might be one of the other 31 teams, all of whom need a winger with his skills, and some of whom either have more cap flexibility than Toronto or will be willing to create the space to sign him."

They aren't 55-60% better though.
They are a decent amount better. And most importantly for a contract, the gap between them when they signed is consistent with the gap between their contracts.
There's really no reason to think that this weird jealous dynamic exists.

Cox is an idiot. No one will pay William Nylander a long term contract at 10+ when he's already entering the tail end of his prime. If he goes to free agency he's getting right around his fair value in the high 8 or low 9 million range no matter the kicking and screaming his agent and media shills do. Then the narrative will be that wherever he signed was a great fit for him and that we couldn't get him at that price because negotiations turned sour. The reality is that it was nothing but greed (and a poor precedent set by Dubas).

Not an overly credible source

William Nylander is not going to get a bigger contract than Gaudreau got last year. Not in a million years. This board remains absolutely clueless on what actual market value is. Like if market value dictates Nylander gets that kind of money than Aho should of got $11M+.

He should lose 500k for every year under 8 years he signs for

don't understand this. Willy being 27 today will be 28 when he starts his next contract. the shorter term benefits the team not Nylander. lets say he signs for 9-9.5 I would rather him sign for 6 years then 8. as Willy will be 35 and 36 in years 7 and 8. he wont be worth that cap hit and likely not even worth it in years 5 and 6.

Doesn't the same thing apply to Mitch and Matty, who are only one year younger?

More proof of how badly Dubas wasted the prime years of all three.

You guys are too hung up on what YOU think Willy is worth to the Leafs with their existing cap structure.

What he’s worth on an open UFA market will look a little bit different, every indication he’ll be testing that.

This is a player who sat out until December and still made Dubas cry uncle for everything he wanted after all.

I don’t believe he has any loyalty at all to this team.

Trade him now.

And Nylander will nix any extention talks so any team that trades for him will get a rental. Then Nylander can nix 10 teams(the only teams with cap space) which means there might be 3-5 teams he could even go to which means you'll get nothing for him....
When it becomes clear the cap goes up to 88 Nylander will get his 10 AAV...

If he doesn’t sign here for a sensible price we will get nothing for his after next year anyways

Bingo.
Treliving needs to show he's not screwing around like Dubas did.
Don't make the same mistake again.

Agreed. The ONLY comparibles around the league that would justify him earning an AAV over 10 million are unfortunately his teammates.

Perhaps if Treliving keeps holding the line that it will be Willy that forces his way off the team in trade.

Because of the situation in Calgary with Gaudreau in the past its less likely BT lets Willy walk for free so it might end up the Nylander if he doesn't come down from his ask might end up forcing himself out of Toronto.

Can you imagine Connor's next deal then?

The difference between McDavid and Matthews is indecent.

McDavid going to be first Max player?

I can see a $3mm difference between Matthews and Nylander ... and a $5mm difference between Matthews and McDavid.

get a list of teams he would extend with and have a auction shit for willy as he was the only one who took a decent aav in the end. maybe he caves it and take 8.8-9.5 x 8 after the recent contracts to aho and tank

mathews and nylander have to be dealt with sooner then later for all parties sakes

You seem to be exaggerating the gap between Matthews and McDavid and minimizing the gap between Matthews and Nylander.
McDavid wouldn't be the first max contract if he took one, but he probably won't take a max contract.
He will likely take a contract that pays him a decent amount more than Matthews and the highest cap hit percentage in the league though.

Team is not going anywhere anyways if we overpay these guys again...if Willy asks too much to get himself traded, so be it.

Maybe you should watch a few more Oilers games.

What you would have seen this year was a motivated McDavid.

Maybe we'll see that with some Leafs player?

I watched a bunch of Oilers games. McDavid is the best player in the world and he was healthy and he had maybe the best PP season ever. Very entertaining to watch.
He's certainly motivated, much like our players.
