11mil for a PPG playerI agree but, in his defense, he was a PPG player last year with 36 goals - he earned his pay check.

That's fair.Yeah, the fact that he's a cookie monster is good in the sense that he's a contributor even when he's struggling to keep up. But it also gives him that statistical shield like ho hum everything's okay. Well, it's not. They brought in ROR and right away he was taking on all of JT's chores and looked way better doing so despite being slow and getting older himself. Something's gotta give.
They can but his contract is buyout proof in terms of what the Cap repercussions would be.Can they buy out JT without his permission?
Not sure how it works, TBH.
Thanks! They can but his contract is buyout proof in terms of what the Cap repercussions would be.
JT has 2 years at 11 million left.
If the Leafs bought him out it would be:
Year 1. 10,393,333 cap
Year 2. 10,393,333 cap
Year 3 and 4: 303,333
Don’t bother. That’s not an option.
Montreal series.Nylander is far more consistent in the playoffs - he's always trying. Matthews and Marner disappear when the going gets tough.
Just looked it up and is base salary is 910,000 so you would save $606,666 the next 2 seasons an then have a 303,333 cap penalty the following 2 years lolI believe it's something like 800k difference.
Not worth it.
Career playoff points:
Marner
10 goals
37 assists
47 points
+9
Matthews
22 goals
22 assists
44 points
+9
Nylander
17 Goals
23 assists
40 points
-1
But to most on this board Matthews and Marner are terrible in the playoffs and Nylander is clutch and great in the playoffs. But I guess to them being worse offensively and significantly worse defensively is somehow better
TBH, I'm not sure if you agree with me or not.Montreal series.
Florida series.
$23mm for a shutdown line, Matthews and marner.
If Nylander is better in the playoffs why doesn’t that show up in the stats?Nylander is far more consistent in the playoffs - he's always trying. Matthews and Marner disappear when the going gets tough.
That is what it is.. moments. Just like the othersWhere have these clutch moments been these past few years? Matthews was clutch against Tampa and the only reason we won.
If Nylander is better in the playoffs why doesn’t that show up in the stats?
Marner and Matthews have more points and have been on the ice for more goals for than against 5 on 5.
Nylander has less points and has been on the ice for more goals against than for 5 on 5.
FWIW: You can buyout a player with a full NMC however Dubas made all Leafs core players with the $11 mil deals all 80-90% signing bonus with low base (buyout proof) so even with a buyout there is little to no savings.I don't think we can, and it's not worth our while to. Only to illustrate that no matter how lucky we were that he chose us, circumstances have changed.
Well my post started in response to someone who said Nylander was more clutch tan Matthews so obviously someone was saying it about Matthews.Lumping Marner together with Matthews is disingenuous, nobody is claiming Nylander is better for the team than Matthews. Marner vs Nylander is a very real debate, particularly when you consider the "special" treatment and linemates each of them have received over their time. Nylander has always been expected to do the heavy lifting himself with whoever is leftover, Marner has constantly been coddled with lines created just for him specifically.
Why don't you think he will go? 2 years left, lots of trade value.
I agree, he's the one to go.

100% its not worth it.
JT has 2 X years at $11 mil left a buyout would be spread over 4 years ans only save the teams < $700k for the next 2 years.

Yes he could.. see brooks orpik wsh/col and potentially josh bailey tomorrowJT is worth buying out next offseason if there is a horrible team that wants a cap hit and no player.
Just trade him after this bonus is paid, team 2 buys him out and gets a 10M cap hit for like 400k.
I believe he could then return to the Leafs since a 2nd team bought him out?
The team has been managd by a bunch of buffoons. They’ve never given him any linemates, other than Matthews and Tavares when he was good, and if they could ever provide some good players he could certainly drive a line.Marner should be good enough to drive his own line. Leafs paid him like that. Matthews and Marner should be running their own line. If Marner needs a center to play with we got problems.
I don't think that's allowed.I notice Dahlin's a
Oh yeah that's right. More the bonus structure that would make a buyout pointless.
I wonder if we could trade him somewhere along with a sweetener and have them trade him back to us with retention. I don't know if that kind of circumvention has been discussed before.
Well then this seems like a reasonable option to explore next offseason.Yes he could.. see brooks orpik wsh/col and potentially josh bailey tomorrow
marner needs a better center to play with.
But to be fair marner scored a goal against Florida while Tavares and Matthews did nothing.
Of course $33mm for 1 goal is a bargain.
Nylander's 2 goals were better value so trade the value and protect the $33mm.
