Have you ever watched Good Will Hunting?

This is a case of the 200 IQ kid who chooses to work manual labour jobs.

There's nothing wrong with working those jobs, of course.

But it sometimes takes someone to explain that when you have that 200 IQ, you're short changing yourself by not going for more challenging endeavors.
And this perfectly sums up the quality of this post too.

2018 wants it's narrative back.

Because we need a total culture change. And lets not forget what he did at the last set of negotiations...
He'll squeeze us for every dime
So get rid of the overpaid ones and keep the guy who still signed for a bargain.

Bargain now. At the time it wasn't. He wont stay here ....he'll test the market & go to the highest bidder. Just like his Dad did what 7 different times?

Bargain then and even more now. Considering the way he's been treated here I wouldn't blame him for testing the waters, but there's no justification for assuming he will just because someone else did.

Lets wait & see....

Willy has now played for a single team for much longer than his father ever did. Two different men, two different perspectives on things...
He couldn’t have left if he wanted to.

He didn't need to commit 6 years of his prime post ELC. Could have taken a shorter route to ufa status. Could have requested trades too. Plenty of RFAs seek anyway out one way or the other - which hasn't been the case with Nylander
He’s no different than a vast majority of players.
This doesn’t really prove anything.
I don’t think he wants to leave. I doubt his dad really wanted to leave where he was. Most players don’t unless the team gives them a reason to.

One could also point him seeking assurance from Dubas during his rfa negotiations that there wouldn't be a sign and trade.

But regardless I think the accusations that Nylander uniquely has a mercenary mindset has always struck me as unfair given the same could be applied to anyone else in the core

Nylander is the only one of the big 3 who wanted 8 years straight out of the gate and held onto 8 years to the point he became fat thor. Just squash any talks of where his heart lies right now.

Exactly. Some people just make up narratives and some people are happy to hop on the train but so far, I see no reason to think Nylander wants to leave. Maybe he wants max out his earnings but if that's the case, that's not unusual either, we'll see.

O'Reilly's another one - one poster here has posted a number of times about him being a mercenary but when asked where that comes from, crickets. Maybe it's true I dunno but you'd think if it was, the guy would explain why. In any case, I hope both sign new deals with the Leafs in the summer.

GLG!!

wish I could see the votes because I dunno which one to choose, I dont wanna lose him I just dont see how its realistic to keep him he for sure gets 9.5-10+m

So far tonight, we have gotten the useless version of Nylander.

The problem is that while he's not contributing offensively at all tonight, he's not involved in any way physically.

And that go ahead goal SN just showed the replay of, Knies lets his man go behind the net, but Nylander just watches him come out to the hash marks to get a clean shot and he doesn't engage.

Wasn't O'Reilly asking for something like 7x7 coming out of his ELC and then he signed an offer sheet from Calgary, which turned out to be a debacle?

I have no idea. That's interesting though, not sure it's enough reason to label him a mercenary if it was just that one time though.

The one where JT lost the faceoff, and Willy's job was to cover the point?

This place really has it out for Nylander. The guy has to be 10/10 every second of his life not to get called out. Even when he scores so much the past few years, he's the only Leaf who isn't allowed to even take 1 second off. I don't know if I like Nylander so much because of himself, or because of the need to always have defend him to toronto fans.

We'd be down 1-2 in the series if the puck didn't get to Nylander down low. Slowly and calmly kept his head up and read the play in front of the net for them to crash it home.

No, that was the goal Knies didn't follow his man behind the net, and he came out the other side and scored a sitter.

You're wrong.
All he needs to do is skate.

When he's skating, he's amazing, when he's not skating, he's a massive liability.

It's not hard to ask a player to move his feet is it?

He's not laying the body on anyone, he's not blocking shots.
The least he can do is move his feet and chase the pucks when they're up for grabs.

He let up on a bunch of plays tonight again in the 1st and 2nd periods.

Woke up in the 3rd and OT and was doing well again.

Amazing that he can get so much better when he just skates!!

It's a 60 minute game. Nylander is in a tier where all he needs is 1 good minute to win you the game. These players don't grow on trees. Toronto as a whole doesn't deserve him with all the slander they send his way.

Nylander is far from liability on his off days. I usually see him still setting up line mates with smart plays. He's one of the smartest guys on the team.

What I mean by my first paragraph is by now Nylander should have built benefit of the doubt but Toronto doesn't want to give it to him. He has to play good all 60 minutes every game otherwise it's dog house.

Look at the effort and tell me that's ok for the playoffs.

It's not.
