So at that point you have to choose between Nylander at $11M and Marner at $12M?

That's easy - keep the better player, who's also getting paid less.

The problem is one is tradeable and one has a NMC

If the choice is between trading Nylander vs letting Marner walk - which are you picking?

Now do JT, who's career high was one point lower than Willy's.

He signed for $11M when the cap was $79.5M. Next year it's estimated to be $87.5M, or about 10% higher.

They'll be the same age. Currently Willy is about 160 points behind in about 130 fewer games.

Tavares was a franchise level 1C when he was signed and he also only got 77M because we couldn't give him 8 years

Nylander is still a winger, only has one PPG season under his belt and this season has the distinct whiff of a gigantic outlier

I'm all for paying guys but if you pay through the nose for these 20 games you will end up regretting it

First, you were talking about when we have to re-sign Marner for more than $11, so at that point he would be tradable.

Second, if we have to choose between Nylander and Marner, I just started my preference. If I have to say it again: keep Nylander.

Why would he be tradeable? He has a NMC. We cannot trade him if he doesn't want to be traded. We've seen it happen with Sundin - who did not want to waive his NMC to be a rental. Allegedly happened with Tavares in NYI - he said he didn't want to leave.

That's fine - but it's not a 1:1 comparison. Only one of the players can be traded against their wishes, and it isn't Marner.

Marner has all the power on trading him.
Nylander doesn't.

It's an unfair situation because it's not a decision necessarily based on merit alone - but a business decision. The same reason waiver-exempt players are sent down when they're outplaying their competition.

There has to be some urgency on Toronto end to get this deal wrapped up now.

Not sure what the "only 7 years" has to do with anything - he was paid $11M per season.

JT got 13.83% of the cap.

If Willy gets $11, it will be 12.57%.

You said Willy isn't worth $11 because he never broke 90 - neither has JT.

With his last two seasons being 80 and 87 points, I'm not sure you can call this season a 'gigantic outlier'. He probably won't keep up this pace, but is 90 or even 100 points unrealistic?

Would be nice if Willy and Marner went to each other and just agreed privately to take matching $10M deals on their next contracts. Problem solved
Why would Willy do that? The Leafs screwed him and paid mitch big time when he didng deserve it. Get 16 out of here and recoup some assets

You missed the point. You said when JT's contract is up and when we have to pay Mitch more. At that time, Mitch will be tradable.

Mitch is not tradeable because he has a NMC straight to UFA. His contract ends at the same time as Tavares.

What do you mean he's tradeable?

If Mitch doesn't want to be traded and wants to walk to UFA and leave - he holds all the cards.

Doea the NMC kick in this year already? Thought we had another year damn

Yes, his NMC is already active straight to UFA.

People seem to think Marner is tradeable - he is not unless he wants to be, he holds all the cards.

The only scenario I can see him being traded is if he wants to leave. If he wants to stay in Toronto but they want to move him, I don't see him doing the team any favours.

You're the one who specified that time. In fact, you said when he's paid more than $11, which means he's re-signed, hopefully without a new NMC.

Even if he's unsigned, I'd rather have him walk than Willy (I'd rather keep both than let either walk).

But yes, he holds all the cards - another disaster from Dubas.

lol its hilarious to me that people are saying hes now worth 11-12 million a season because of 17 games, hes been basically the same player for the previous 520 games but now hes suddenly worth more than david pastrnak and a top 10 player in the league based off of less than 1/4 of a season???? i like willy and want him to stay, but hearing numbers like 12mil a season is mentallllllll. 10 million is fair for what hes done in his career(maybe even a touch too much if im being honest) signing him for over 11 is sheer stupidity.
