The only trade that is even remotely possible, is moving Nylander, if his demands don't fit in the Salary Cap. Even then, we aren't likely to win the trade, and are probably better off keeping him.

If we can fit in Nylander, he will be staying... and we will be better for it.

I get the need for D, but I also think it's overly exaggerated as an issue.

Sign Willy but not right now when pre XMAS he looks like one of best players in league .. his game drops off, or has in past, when time and space on puck is reduced post XMAS .. bottom line 9-10M is gonna be da number .. his speed, skills warrant it

Kings had Doughty, Hawks had Keith, Tampa had Hedman, Colorado had Makar, St Louis and Vegas had Pietro, Bruins had Chara, Wings had Lidstrom and Ducks had Pronger. In 17 years of Cup winners the exceptions to the stud D rule are pretty much the Pens and the Caps. The Pens are most obvious exception to the rule and maybe the closest comp for the Leafs so I guess thats something. As far as goaltending goes tor sure I agree a club can win without a wall in net but they don't intentionally go into the playoffs squeezing nickels on the goalies, They just sometimes end up with a Hill or a Binnington

Kings had Quick on a cheap deal, Hawks had a merry go round of random cheap Gs, Tampa had Vasi but had to play 10mil over the cap in the playoffs once his big contract kicked in, Colorado had a cheap journeyman, St Louis had a cheap nobody, Vegas had a merry go round of guys under 5mil, Bruins had Rask and Thomas on cheap deals, Osgoode is probably the guy who started the cheap “just good enough” goalie meme, Giguere was expensive for the cap at the time.

Vasi is the only expensive goalie to win in the modern era and that required Kucherov LTIR gimmicks to basically negate the raise he got. As soon as they had to deal with his full contract without LTIR they lost most of their depth and started overpaying for cheap contracts like Jeannot.

You should aim to have a good goalie but the priority should be to spend under 7-8 mil total (backup included). Ideally you have a 25 year old Vasi on his first cheap RFA deal but if you have to choose between 30 year old Vasi at 10mil w/NMC and a younger 10-15 range average starter with a bit of upside left at under 5, you take the latter.

Think he ends up coming in around 9.5x8 or something in that ball park.
Just give him the 10M and get it over with. You can't put the ketchup back in the bottle with these guys at this point. Dubas made a mess of this core and nobody can fix it now without looking like an asswipe to the fans by trading them away. I would however draw a hard line with Marner and see if he bolts because he is going to want AM money and term if he gets to 100pts this year.

Agreed. I look at it more like they cant just expect a $4.3M tandem going forward.. It might be cheap for the short term if Woll takes off but 6-7M is a more realistic budget for a pair. Any more than that is diminishing returns.

It would be amazing to have a solid #1 D to join Rielly, but giving up Nylander for it would be the wrong move for sure. He looks like he's at his peak so far right this very moment and I predict he'll get even better.

Nylander will be a 10+ million dollar man on his next contract either in Toronto or elsewhere...
Guy has gotten better every single year since entering the league with this year looking like no exception... looking for 90+ points for him this year if he stays healthy all season...

Hopefully, teammates having your back isn't a big thing for Nylander.
He has to show some fight of his own, on his own behalf and for his team mates, before he can expect the low-priced help to step in on his behalf. His wuss line mates aren't Tom Wilson types either, unfortunately.

The real question isn't his worth, you can make the case for him getting up to $11m on a long term deal. The real question is does it make sense to put even more on the cap on the top 4 guys.

With the roster as is, they have a hard time scoring 5v5, their D is a disaster. It's only gonna get worse when the Matthews contract kicks in and Mitchy gets his raise.

Do you take Willie's money and use it to upgrade the D and bottom 6? Bundy has his work cut out for him.

What makes that quote "analysis"?

Its likely shaped by him talking to people in and around the negotiations.

I find CJ often says things that people don't like, but he does seem to have a few ins with the Leafs. He was the first in the media to say the Leafs wouldn't be trading any core players this summer (which again, some folks certainly didn't like hearing)

Simple answer is yes!
Tavares may be gone after this season so there'll potentially be tons of cap space to address those concerns...
Nylander is top 25 player in the game right now... would be stupid as f*** to let him walk
imho
