I don't believe the Hurricanes would grossly overpay Nylander with Sebastain Aho's contract coming up - who is a much better player. If we get a good return for Willy, I'm going to be very happy. Stevie Y did it with Drouin, so it's possible.

Actually seems implausible that Carolina of all places would have the money to pay Nylander, let alone cap hit. I mean they did go and dump Skinner because he was too pricey.

Most of the times a team trades away a very good young player it doesn't end well for that team - look at Boston and Tyler Seguin - they have nothing to show for it - none of the players and picks Boston received are any longer with the team - Boston still regretting that trade to this day

Look at Boston and Phil Kessel...wait, never mind

The way I see it both Matthews and Nylander will return to the lineup on the same day sometime in early Dec - It's going to be a great time for Leaf fans

Leaf fans don't want a very good team. They want a Cup.

But it doesn't have to e this season.....why is that so hard for you to accept?

Never mind, I really should know better. You've made up your mind, please carry on.

We are in "Win now" mode. Trading our 22 year old 60+ point player for Draft picks and prospects(unless they're NHL ready NOW) would be moronic.

Plus I'm not exactly sure how useful that cap space would be around Deadline time, I mean who's honestly expected to be available?

If we're trading Willie, we need another good young player coming back who can contribute immediately, period

How did Boston make out when they traded 21 year old Kessel for picks?

That's asinine. What's he supposed to do cave to Willie's Dad's demands or put a gun to his head say sign or else??? It takes two to agree to a deal.

People claimed he was this genius GM. Here's the first big challenge and he's failing miserably. Most GM's are able to get their RFA's signed to contracts without missing any games. The last GM we had was not only able to do that, but he was able to convince the players to take team friendly deals. Here's the guy we mortgaged the core of our front office for, and he's falling on his face so far. Not a good sign for the future.

Extremely lucky. Especially since at this point any team trading unprotected firsts would have to be a guaranteed playoff team.

It's funny because I feel like teams protecting 1sts has been a recent trend. In fact, I actually think they started popping up more and more after the Kessel trade went down .

With the league becoming more reliant on younger talent, it makes sense that 1st round picks carry much more value than even 10 years ago.

It'd be great if Nylander, or the trade return from Nylander, ends up being what puts the team over the top. No reason to limit that hope to this season only though. That's asking for quite a bit IMO.

For sure.

What about the Avs they have Makar and their own first. No way we'd get the Sens first.

That's the kind of Dman I see the Leafs targetting for Nylander. Someone who is unproven but is can't miss as a prospect who is a year away at most.

Is he failing cause he hasn't convinced him to sign for a reasonable amount or is he failing cause he hasn't signed him no matter the consequence?

I'd love to get a high end prospect for Nylander, much better than a draft pick.

Have you followed the Leafs for long?

A GM that does not improve his team isn't a GM for long. We have an asset. He must be signed or traded. There is no holding him (or his return asset) out for a year.

This rookie GM will be eaten alive as the season unfolds if he fails to improve the team. And his risks further scrutiny if the trade back fires.

Welcome to Toronto

Stop the drama...if Dubas wanted to be eaten alive, Willy would have been signed already to whatever he is demanding.

Forget signing the contract, he wont even survive the contract. This guy is going to be the most highly analyzed player in TO even if he signs, hes going to get eaten alive. Thats the take nobody is talking about.

Just give the kid a 2yr contract at high value and see where its goes. Stop trying to shove 6x6 down his throat and hoping for a Pastrnak outcome.

I just dont think Williams camp is looking at it like that. Neither do I.

As soon as he signs with the Leafs he will be the #4 offensive guy and he will not become a full time center. That is what he knows and the stuff you gave as possible examples of him eventually climbing the internal ranking or becoming a center is not even on the equation since there is just to many ifs and buts.

That's BS...the world and future isn't static. He's really narrow-minded if he thinks that.

It wasn't too long ago that Kadri was on the brink of being a bust and on the trading block...when he was drafted, almost everyone thought he will only succeed on the wing in the NHL due to his size and frame...he worked his ass off, turned himself around and became a solid #2 centre...Kadri is a #2 centre no matter where he plays in the line-up. If Nylander has the drive and skills, he could displace Tavares and Kadri in the future as the #2 centre...surely, Willy doesn't think he's better than Matthews as a centre, and should be the #1 centre on this team, does he? The issue is on Willy, he wanted to be handed the keys before earning it.
