If he's playing 2nd pairing defensive minutes, no that isn't protection or where he was supposed to be slotted going into the season.

Playing higher than your intended slot on defence is the complete opposite of protecting, that's exposing.

Hockey coaching 101

We signed a #6 to 4.15 million?

Ooooof, that is bad.

This was posted before:

"Entering tonight's action, there were 188 defencemen with 100+ minutes at 5v5.

Klingberg had started just 5.6% of his shifts with a defensive zone face-off. That ranked 187th of 188."

How much more protection do we need to give him?

The same way they were down 4-1 against Tampa and won? Leads change in games. It happens. All of this moaning, and yet has anyone looked where the Leafs are in the standings despite playing way below their abilities? Literally tied with almost every other team in the conference. In other words, even playing at their worst they are treading water with everyone else. When they start playing well, they will leapfrog all of these teams.

Point producing, PP-capable defencemen cost money in the NHL

No ones really figured out a steady way to measure and pay appropriately for overall defensive ability yet.

Whistle starts don't factor that heavily into what you could aptly consider "protection" since the bulk of action is played through continuous play / change-on-the-fly , which again these stupid stats you cite don't know how to measure properly either.

The fact is his worst play has been when both McCabe and Lilly have been injured and him and Gio have been thrust off the deep-end into 2nd pairing defensive matchups.

It's quite an accomplishment for Reaves to go -2 in 4:33. That's like -25 in 60 minutes.

Quite remarkable.

Better odds of the other team scoring if Reaves is on the for two minutes than if they had a power play.

Keep Klingberg in the press box, and Reaves off the ice. I don't care how, just keep him off the ice.

7 teams within a point of each other with the Leafs playing probably their worst hockey in years. How can anyone actually be worried about this? I get the distance to Boston, and I think the Leafs will narrow that point difference in the coming weeks, but nobody should be concerned about a playoff spot.

He is not a point-producing D though... that is the issue... if he was, his defensive troubles might be overlooked a little.

They track changes on the fly too... he starts most of his shifts that way like every D... but Keefe tries to have him avoid the D zone more than any other D on the team.

When you posted "This is going as expected" in the GDT were you expecting them to blow the 4-1 lead?

The problem is, and it wont be his fault really; once his streak comes to an end he is bound to go cold for awhile while his numbers revert to the mean. It must be be exhausting to keep a streak going
I honestly don’t think he’s going too cold tbh and he didn’t for too long last year

There is a significant roster turn over from last year, and they have over turned even worse starts in the last two seasons. A lot of the panic is media driven. Logical fans understand there is a significant portion of the season that lays ahead. October and November is pond hockey. You don't want to peak to early either.

Great win. No false positives, clearly there is much to work on, but we didn't full collapse like the Ottawa game and the W feels way better than an OTL.

If we can manage another gutsy win against the Canucks, we may actually have something to look forward to with the European trip. Climb out of the hole one game at a time
Great that the Leafs got the win, but I wouldn't call it a great win.

In the first period the Flames rang one off the post and then got one disallowed on a quick whistle. I'm glad for the luck, but the Leafs were lucky to win this one.

However, unless you are only stat watching, you've noticed he is often the first forward on the backcheck on his line.

If he keeps this effort up, he'll get the benefit of the doubt like others have in the past. He isn't poaching assits he's generating them.

Guys in here talking about Zadorov like he is the second coming of Chris Pronger. He would be absolute dog shit for us. We need an Alex Pietrangelo type defenseman. Zadorov lol.... screw that turn coat.
