What was the right contract?

I wonder if any of that has to do with Tavares?

Comparing ES production per 60, Nylander (2.51 to 1.21) and Bertuzzi (1.66 to 1.07) have dropped by roughly half, while their centre has gone from 1.91 to 0.32.

In those 13 games, Willy is tied for second on the team in ES goals with 3, while JT and Bert have zero. JT has one ES assist in those games.

So one 11 million dollar player is the problem with the other 11 million dollar player? You’d think with 22 million making up 2/3rds of a line they could produce……
I think the problem is that only one of them is an $11M player (and he isn't being paid that yet). The other one maybe used to be, but certainly isn't now.

Don't confuse salary with ability - if we paid Reaves $11M would he suddenly become a ppg player?

Niether player was or will ever be worth 11mil

That's a separate issue which really has nothing to do with my point.

Ok. Set aside the fact that Dubas totally messed up the salary structure so they are overpaid. Say they each signed for 8M - JT starting In 2018 and Willy starting in 2024.

The fact still remains: one of them is an 8M player and the other isn't any more.

The sad fact is that he’ll never live up to this contract, and he’ll be hated for it before it’s all over…….
They will have to get the finals( most likely after JT's contract is up) to save themselves in front of the fans

If BT can fix the backend this offseason. Or at least add a couple of solid pieces, hopefully the JT money can add some quality forward depth.

I have to hope..
And wait another season for JT to be off the books, this is a never ending shit show………

Jt not even a point a game player he’s a “right around a point player”

Only one way to find out. ;)

Willie on pace for 55 points in last 12 games and -8. That include 8 games without a point.

That is your second best player folks.

Meanwhile Pasta has 18 points in his last 12 games, and +12, 2 games without a point. Well done Tre.

To be fair its a small sample. On the other hand he has never been at Pasta level historically.

It is but it shows me he is back to his old self.
Not quite fair IMO. His old self is a lot better than a 55 point player so he's obviously just going through a dry spell.

Having said that, him going back to his old self going forward is probably more likely than him going back to being what he was in the first part of the season. Hopefully he can do a bit better than that, we'll see, but no matter what, I doubt that signing him when we did to that contract will ever look like like anything but a huge mistake. Waiting until the end of the season would have been so much better, oh well.

Since he signed the contract extension he has 11 points in 13 games, for a 69 point pace.

Considering that his linemates have combined for zero goals and five assists at ES over that period despite being third and eighth on the team in shots (Willy's second), I'm not sure Willy deserves all the blame. He's still playing well, and setting both of them up a lot. He's still leading the team in takeaways with 17, well ahead of Matty (13) and Mitch (9), and with fewer giveaways (4) than 11 Leafs, including Marner with 22.

The line have the worst +/-, but we know Tavares is really bad defensively, and Bert isn't great - Willy is easily the best defensively of the three.

All in all, it's just more proof that Keefe hasn't figured out that JT and Willy don't mix well.

We all called it, yet they signed him to that ridiculous contract anyways…..

Wonder if Pasta rides the subway to the Bruins games…..

He's certainly had a few poor games during the most recent stretch, BUT he's also hit a number of posts/near misses for goals.

But as we (should) know by now, going pointless during a game isn't the same thing as not having positive impact. Not everything is told in the basic box scor

Guys like him are expected to drive play, and generate high danger chances and in the long run the stats will come out in favor of the player - which will be the case for Willy by seasons end.

And don’t forget elite zone entries, that’s what got him 11 fricken mil times eight……..

I want to know if the ink has dried on that, yet another, egregious overpay. Talk about the team buying at the top of Willy's market. I dread the Marner negotiation. Seeing how the team played last night without Mitch, I would seriously consider letting him walk and get our salary cap back under control.

Um, no. You don't get a player like Nylander to sign with Toronto for 11 mil, but luckily we didn't have to go too far over that line to get it done. ;)
