Parise's best years weren't wasted at all.

In his prime, he was part of some Minnesota squads that were actually quite good, very up tempo, but still played a solid brand of defense.
Just seems they were always running into championship caliber Blackhawk teams during those years in the playoffs.

Sure, one could argue those Wild teams were good, but NOT GOOD ENOUGH....but 'wasted years'? Poor take.

I think you just validated my entire point. Minnesota was a make the playoffs team nothing more . Look at the lineup , goaltending and coaching it was subpar at best.

Nothing Minnesota threw out on the ice screamed championship, yes chicago was a championship caliber team. Just like tampa or past teams Detroit and Pittsburgh, I'll give la some props to

I have nothing against Zach I think he is a solid player maybe not a all star or game breaker type player but he can contribute in a 3rd line and his best days when he was younger and more exciting was wasted on a Minnesota team that had many holes with mediocre talent and awful coaching

We had one really solid year in 2017 when we were 2nd in the conference in points behind the hawks but fell flat in the playoffs. If I recall Parise was hurt that year and we did most of it without him, only time I thought we had a chance.

Might not look overly impressive on paper but it just works.

That's the thing with these NY Islanders.... or Barry Trotz teams in general going back to this Nashville days.... never seem to look impressive on paper, yet there they are, always in someone's face, pushing for, and getting wins.

Trotz got his championship with a more star studded Caps team, but it never ceases to amaze me how that man gets the absolute most out of his guys like he did with the Preds and now with the Islanders.

I'd say this Islanders squad is quite a bit more talented upfront than the Nashville one, though they were stacked when it came to defensemen.

But yeah, Trotz is a fantastic coach.

As a Ranger fan, I can acknowledge they have made a lot of solid signings at good term / value recently.

Islanders are a top contender in the East to win the Cup. Dont mistake it. The Conference Finals was last years Cup match-up. If the Isles can get through the Bolts, they are the favorites IMO.

A good place
  • Isles just need 1 LHD top 4 player and I think sadly they're the best team come playoffs.
Elite goaltending duo, very offensively deep forward core with tough players who play a grinding and playoff style game (know how to defend, interfere re and obstruct without crossing the line which is needed come playoffs as all contending teams do this), and have a strong top 3D with solid depth. Need 1 more top 4 LHD and they will be very scary.

They have the assets to get a player as well. Komorov +Wilde + 2nd should bring a solid LHD who can round out the team
I think they’ll see which of Salo, Bolduc, or Aho earns the spot in training camp. There may be some growing pains. But unless they can shave off enough cap space and trade for an already nhl second pair LD, they’ll see what they have in their prospects.

Nonetheless Minnesota it's front office and owner never implemented a real strategy to build a championship team . I understand there is no guarantee at winning a cup but looking at teams who've managed to build contenders that last multiple years have a plan in place to draft lots of young talent and a few future superstars then once those kids make the jump within a couple of years you notice the payoff and the depth then you bring in a veteran supporting cast to compliment them.

Minnesota imo never had enough young up and coming superstars on the team plus coaching was horrendous.

Minnesota maybe had 1 line the rest were avg players defensively it was OK but imo lacked enough solid talent. Look at chicago keith seabrook hammer , big buff , that was there first championship, then oduya for runs 2 and 3 .

I'm just saying Minnesota imo wasn't ever a real serious threat of a contender for many reason lack of talent impact clutch players , coaching and no stability in goaltending

If Lou signed him to a bargain contract to play bottom 6, he done good.

Parise's skating actually was decent last year: after he had his back surgery and recovered he looks much more mobile.

His problem last year was being a turnover machine in the neutral zone, and loser of many a puck battle.

He can still be a wily poacher of goals on occasion, and has a ton of heart as we all know. He had a spell playing with Ryan Hartman last season where he looked pretty damn good, then got caught up in the Covid protocols. Looked good again when Dean turned him loose in the playoffs.

So he was trending somewhat positively at the end of last season.

Islanders are already over the cap before signing Parise. Any ideas about the solution? IR?

I think signing Parise tells you all you need to know about the isles confidence in Bellows

I think NYI putting an offensive black hole that is Uncle Leo on the top line because at least he's defensively responsible in the regular season even when playoffs were decided said everything there was to say about that. NYI are also bringing Dal Colle back. I don't think Bellow suits up for NYI again.

Best of luck to Parise.

If they get in, through the craziest division in a while, he should be 100% motivated and have a good chance to put up a (poor man's) pavelski like playoff scoring. At least he is a player that can be guaranteed to leave everything on the ice.

So…they lost Eberle and replaced him with Parise? They should just give Trotz the jack adams every year considering the roster he has to work with.

A little misleading...

They got Palmieri to fill in for Lee (in a scoring capacity).

So now they have Lee back and have chosen to go with Palmieri over Eberle. Can't afford them all.

The big winner?

Wahlstrom, who now gets a regular role.

Pretty much in agreement, we were close but always lacked next level offensive talent. During that time we always had a top 5 or 10 defense so you might be off there, really solid in both ends too. Goaltending solid but not spectacular. I like the current group of better than the last group but we will see how it all pans out. Good luck with Parise.
