It’s a rule to prevent teams from subverting the cap/roster/contract limits by having guys in reserve in other leagues, with a handshake agreement to sign them mid season.

It mostly just seems to cause issues.

The below link corresponds to the January 11th game vs Dynamo in which he was benched for poor defensive play. Got into a yelling match with the coach when not put on the PP. He then stayed in the lockerroom for the 3rd period.
Basically he was all about accumulating points (big bonu$ potential), not winning.
