I get that Chicago probably has picks burning a hole in their pocket so it makes sense to consolidate. But why now a month before the draft? Why not wait to see who's on the board?

Maybe the Isles have a trade cooking where they need an extra 2nd. I can't see it being anything involving a 1st, cause the acquiring team probably wouldn't want the Isles to "keep the change" for moving back a couple spots

Hawks obviously have a tier break in the late teens
And that may make sense.

but for arguments sake lets pretend they have a tier class for the first round that goes something like this:

1st overall - consensus pick (Tier 1)
2nd-3rd OA- interchangeable (Tier 2)
4th-6th OA- Tier 3
7th-10th OA - Tier 4
11th-18th OA - Tier 5
19th-25th OA - Tier 6
26th-32nd OA - Tier 7

For the record I do not know anyone in this draft class other than Macklin Celebrinni. I don't follow prospects too closely until post draft. I am purely basing my tier system based historically on what we tend to see in a 1st round.

CHI was slated to select in a Tier 5 spot at 20 OA. To get into that next tier break it would have only meant 2 teams would have to reach out of their tier for them to be able to get a player in a tier above their position. Which happens all the time nowadays.

All that to say, If the logic behind this trade was because they would be happy with any player selected in Tier 5 and do not see value in tiers 6 and 7, there was a good chance they would have been able to snag a tier 5 player without even moving off of pick 20.

Why not wait to see how the first say 13-15 picks go before making this deal lol? what happens if someone that they view as a tier 6 or 7 player gets selected in that time frame?

no matter how you look at this deal, it is a stupid deal for Chicago. It makes zero sense to make this deal today.

Edit - i was wrong, have to use you own picks. Insert emily litella here.

How about this...

Isles getting ready to offer sheet necas (or some other rfa). They expect to lose their first, so don't give a care if it is 18 or 20, and now they have an extra second so they still get a pick in that round. Not a bad bit of business.

Only way it makes sense from Chicago is if they have somebody circled and had info that led them to believe he’d be gone by the time they picked.

If I am not mistaken all offer sheet compensations must be your own original selections

Don't they usually wait until the draft, or at least until after the combine and interviews, for stuff like this to happen? Friggin weird timing.

Marner couldn’t handle Roy as a coach, he’ll demand too much from him. It’s going to be someone who will actually sign long term. He hasn’t made a deal for a quality roster piece that didn’t involve some form of an extension. Palmieri, Romanov, Pageau and Horvat all signed long term quickly after the Islanders obtaining them.

that he'd be selected by the NYI or specifically by the team who holds the 19th OA pick??

they moved up 2 spots from a late mid round selection to another late mid round selection. They've not guaranteed themselves shit at this point lol. They just threw away a 2nd rounder for no reason IMO.

there's absolutely no way they can predict with full certainty that the player they hope to select is infinitely more available at 18 as opposed to 20 IMO

Unless there is something else coming (Additional trade up) this is pretty stupid trade

To give up a 2nd to move up 2 + 4 a month ahead of draft really makes no real sense

If this was draft day and guy you wanted was falling, understandable

This trade = Why now?

I dont recall saying they guarenteed anything. But if they have info that their guy was being picked at 18 or 19, they improved their odds at him.

And in terms of overall draft value, they got more out of this deal than NYI.

Marner extending would be part of any deal with him, regardless of the team he goes to. Also I could see NYI being a good fit, a team with a leadership core already in place and he can just play.
