Fabbro is barely playing and has a 2.5aav cap hit.

He’s playing 13:06 per game this season as Nashville’s 7th D. A full minute and a half below Schenn, who’s their 6th D. Fabbro has been a healthy scratch in 40% of the games they’ve played.

Granted, that’s a small sample. We can add last season into the mix too. Adding in last season, he drops to 8th in average ice time per game among Nashville D. Drop MDG if you want (only 13gp) and Fabbro sits 7th.

Add in the season before that and he drops to 9th. Filter out guys with less than 20gp and he’s 7th.

He's been their 7th D for 3yrs running.

We've watched it for those 3 years after he was paired with Josi (in his career year) and it has never made an ounce of sense. Not sure what the stats might say, but by the eye test he is a better defenseman than Carrier, Schenn, Lauzon, and nearly everyone except Josi, Ekholm, McDonagh, and Skjei during that stretch. And this sentiment has seemed nearly unanimous across the Preds board in that time.

Vlasic is definitely a LHD. Rutta is expendable. Thompson is unproven.

This would "fix" any real questions about having NHL calibre d-men. Obviously not a good defence still, but at least not a defence made up of journeymen.
Correct on Vlasic, my bad, it's been so long.

I agree with you, but I'm not sure Grier does.

Said it in the other thread earlier today, and somebody called me wrong. Trotz already proved himself to be a bad GM. Now he's just a f***ing idiot.
I bet half a dozen teams would take Fabbro for a 4th or 5th Rounder.

Panthers among them.

2.5m for a #6-7 who's now past the blossoming stage, don't see much appeal for MTL, maybe the Sharks or Hawks have a need but really, meh. This thread screams HF typical overacting, a hyped prospect failed and now people are screaming bloody murder because no team wants to give anything for him

He's an established RD with over 300 games played. He wasn't ever really hyped, I mean he's 17th OV pick in his draft year. Mid 1st rounder never really are. For whatever reason Nashville is looking to move on. This happens all the time that some players just need a change of scenery/new opportunity. I'd be surprised if multiple teams won't put in a claim even with the 2.5m cap hit as he's on an expiring deal. No long term risk.

Surely someone will take him now—even if it’s just a bottom-feeder who plans to flip him 50% retained at the deadline.

There has to be something off with Fabbro.. Mental health, not as dedicated as he should be?

From the very limited viewings I've had, I've never been a big fan of Fabbro. He seems decently talented but doesn't wow me with attributes to make him stand out as a top 4 defenseman. My opinion is worth nothing as I've only seen him for a handful of games. He reminds me of Haydn Fleury. Not so much play style but the story of their NHL careers. Fleury occasionally showed an amazing game, but was otherwise just a less valuable defenseman than guys like Trevor Van Riemsdyk. I wonder if Fabbro will be the same way, or if he will break out with more minutes on another team.

I was going to add that it makes sense for Nashville to cut ties, but then I saw they actually have a lot of capspace and only 3 D men signed for 3+ years. Go figure. This is probably the first part of a bigger move down the road.

Yeah I just figure there’s something about his personality off-ice the Preds don’t like. :dunno: And not anything truly bad or controversial, that would have come out by now. Rather maybe he’s just not as vocal or rah-rah or a cool bro dude like the stereotypical hockey player persona?

Something doesn’t fit, since he is indeed a much better player on the ice than the Preds utilization would make you think from the outside. Especially relative to the other #3-6 D the Preds play ahead of him. I agree 100% with the above, he’s better than Lauzon, Schenn, and Carrier. Hopefully his new team will find that out.

Wouldn’t be surprised if he were claim but the amount of GMs that are interested in a mediocre defenseman with a $2.5M cap hit is probably smaller than this board thinks
San Jose has a ton of cap space and desperately needs D men that are good enough to be described as "mediocre", most of what they have to offer at the position is legitimately terrible, I hope they stake a claim

I feel like there are 31 teams about to put a claim in.
I mean he is a RHD that can put in minutes and not kill you. He isn't going to doing anything that gets you excited, he's just decent. I mean if you are a team that has space and needs a Dman you would be dumb not too.

We never figured out what the deal was, because from what we saw on the ice he was certainly better than some of the guys we were playing. Maybe he smells or something, we literally heard zero reason as to what was going on.

Let the rebuild commence! :sarcasm:

Half of you wanting your team to claim him dont have the cap space. Hes never making it to the Pens, but I would happily take him.

Well I don’t think Fabbro is ever going to wow anybody with any standout attribute. He skates well in all directions and I think has pretty good gap control amd positioning. He’s not physical and has below-average strength for an NHL defenseman, so he does have to make up for that with skating and general savvy.

He’s not going to put up points or hits stats. Which I guess is also part of why the Preds brain trusts never really cottoned to him. Lauzon is a train wreck comparatively, but he does play the body with abandon which seems to be something Preds coaches like. Schenn has some kind of veteran intangibles I guess. Carrier runs around at both ends so I guess it looks like he’s more active. But I do believe that Fabbro’s less flashy / more controlled style is actually more effective… subtle, understated, but actually better for the team. It’s why he was such an effective partner for Josi a few seasons back when the latter had his biggest season. Behind the scenes of all those points, Fabbro was quietly minding shop while Josi played rover.
