This shouldn't even be a discussion. Rielly is doing this with an anchor tied around his ankle that he has to schlep all over the ice (almost 38 year old Ron Hainsey). Unless Rielly misses 15+ games it's inconceivable that the Norris wouldn't be his.

Well that’s closed minded

If anything it's the opposite. There are voters who have publicly admitted voting AGAINST players on the Leafs because they don't want to be SEEN as biased themselves, and/or think it's their duty to counter this supposed bias. Leafs players have to work extra hard to win awards.

You're right, he deserves zero recognition or consideration for the award.

Consideration is fine. Claiming he has taken a sizable leap above the others is laughable and full on homer.

Put a decent number of other defensemen in that Toronto offense and they'd apparently be leaping ahead of the competition as well....

If Rielly had these stats for Boston you'd have no issue with this.
And you've added an untrue context FYI, the writer never states he has a sizeable lead, and even knocks his defensive play. What a homer!

This reeks of crap.

His twitter location is Toronto. Who pays him?
Is Charlie Mcavoy still better than Rielly?
The irony of fans who laughably underrated Rielly for years now upset he gets compliments for a fantastic season is ridiculous.
Maybe you guys think Rielly should not b e#1 on this list because you thought guys like Trouba, Paryko, ETC were so much better.

So far this is the best performance we've seen from a dman since the days of Lidstrom at least. Maybe even further back.

Maybe the best performance by a Leaf dman, or any dman playing for an Ontario team, ever.

Let's hope he keeps it up, it's incredibly entertaining.

It's actually hilarious how critical you're of Karlsson but Reilly to you is some sort of god lmao

Agreed, how the hell did Letang get on this list?
:D
Exactly!!!
I think it needs to be better way to cast Norris Trophy candidates.

Also it should be Bobby ORr trophy for defenseman....

I'd ask who is each of those guys most common partner? I bet no one has anyone nearly as bad as a 38 year old Hainsey as their partner. That is 100% a factor that is ignored. He is doing what Gio is doing with better offense, slightly worse defense, and without a MUCH better supporting cast of D and a guy who is multiple times an upgrade on Hainsey as his partner.

I don't know if Rielly wins it, but given that Karlsson and Subban have won it and both play a similar type of puck moving game (and Rielly is better defensively than Subban) I see no reason why if he finishes the year with these insane offensive totals he shouldn't win.

Sometimes the media is hyping people because they deserve it. It's not exactly fair to give a penalty to any Leaf player because they get media coverage. It also means (as we've seen in the past) they get shit on more than most players as well.

I'd understand if he was having an average season and getting the hype but I think I read Rielly is on pace to have the best offensive season in over 30 years.... and if you watch the Leafs he is not a 1 end of the rink guy his ability to get the play to transition and his ability to move the puck is his most valuable attribute to the team and he is the perfect modern NHL D.

This. If Rielly numbers were not enough (They are), the guy has an anchor playing with him nightly. He has a big disadvantage the other DMen don't have.

Ron Hainsey, try to explain that one people.

1. Rielly
2. Giordano
3. Karlsson

For right now...I'd put my money on Karlsson winning in the end though.
Burns would be my fourth candidate. I hope Mark Get it. I suspect Karlsson and Burns n will magically make it more tighter.. Karlsson has a way of going off ..
Yup. I would do Mark or Erik as the last top two candidates to choose from ..

"Leafs Have An AHL D. Hainsey is on the Top Pairing!"
"Reilly Should Not Be #1 on a list for the Norris".

I don't think Rielly is any sort of god. I'm not sure where you get that idea. he's been a solid #1 dman for some time, who is having an exceptional season (so far). We haven't seen a performance like this in a long time. If he continues this way, he'll score 90 points. And that's without the luxury of 28 minutes a game, and 5 minutes of PP that many of the sheltered purely offensive dmen get. He actually does this AND takes nasty matchups.

but it's only half way through the season.

I'm only critical of Karlsson's faults. He is one of the best offensive dmen in the league. He just lacks on the defensive side of the puck. He's quite terrible actually. But hey, he can score 80 points, so it's not all bad.

Right Reilly is the stud defensive player and it's Karlsson who struggles..... Riiiiiiggght.

So would you take Reilly over Karlsson at the same contract?

No, he's not a stud defensively. But he's capable of being used in a purely defensive role, and the goalies behind him don't magically struggle like they do with other dmen. He's decent. Not exceptional, but decent.

Why are you making this a conversation of Karlsson. It's a discussion of this year's Norris, please leave Erik Karlsson out of it.
