It's tough to say tho, i think around 61-62% of his starts this year have been in the o-zone. Letang has been getting much harder deployments, he doesn't have much help either.

It’s more of a comment on how advanced stats can reflect a lot more of the situation the player is in as opposed to their individual abilities.

Unless we all believe that he spontaneously became a good defender upon being traded.

Should be Giordano's to lose.
Then again, Eastern Bias does exist in the NHL; and will likely be part of the decision come awards day.

Rielly's offensive numbers don't bridge the gap between the actual defensive side of the game that Giordano impacts. I'll take the guy who is a monster 5v5, PP and PK.

The only thing someone like Rielly has on Burns, Carlson, Kneeordano, EK, Letang and the top guys from Tampa and Nashville is his points-total.
When he gets passed by the aforementioned players, he is out of the whole Norris-convo.

*when deciding the "top defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position".

People need to stop assuming this is the D-man Selke trophy.
I’m laughing that offensive play is HIGHLIGHTING and article for the norris

Agreed, how the hell did Letang get on this list?

Actually the best defensive Dman on the list. If you look at the metrics. He and Gio.

Letang has more Dzone starts than Ozone Starts(only one on the list to have that)

Letang also leads in ATOI. He plays more harder mins than anyone on the list and has been tremendous as a shutdown D while being our only offensive D.

He's Doing it all. Legit the Pens MVP.

So far this is the best performance we've seen from a dman since the days of Lidstrom at least. Maybe even further back.

Maybe the best performance by a Leaf dman, or any dman playing for an Ontario team, ever.

Let's hope he keeps it up, it's incredibly entertaining.

Lol the Norris is hilarious. “Gaudy offensive numbers” when deciding who the top DEFENSE player in the nhl is.
Funny, almost every year it's an award to the guy with the most points, but suddenly now it's an issue.

How many points do you think Reilly would have playing on a team like the Habs, for example? Is he really that much better than he was before or is it super easy to get points feeding passes to guys like Matthews, Marner, Tavares etc...?

If the Leafs media machine is working on it, Rielly has no chance.
Was gonna say, the media here is just as bad for a player as it is good. These guys chew everything about a player to pieces. It's not some blind homers like the myth people around here think it is.

A little bit of both.

yes, it's the best performance by a dman ever in Ontario, and best since Lidstrom.

I personally think no one will rival some of the performances Pronger put up. At his peak, he was the best we have seen in decades, IMO.

Nah, it's been complained about in the past, and from time to time, some dman just shine too much defensively to overlook, like Doughty.

I wish irony would manifest itself physically in the form of chocolate pudding because I would chow down for days.

Leaf Nation has certainly done an about face on what constitutes a Norris worthy defenceman.
Not sure what you're talking about. Pure coincidence that they did a 180 on the Norris this season.

I mean, do you deduct points because his team is good? Do we run hypotheticals for Doughty/Chara saying, well yeah they're good but what if they were on the Coyotes? The Leafs are good in part because Rielly is good.

Ok, so knowing the way in which the Norris is voted on, why is it an issue now?

Rielly leads in points, his team has the 2nd overall best record, he plays some of the toughest minutes in terms of competition in the entire NHL, and NO ONE on that list plays with a more inept defensive partner who does not help him at all.
Boy, was HF wrong about Morgan Rielly.

I feel like people who want to concentrate on defensive play feel it makes them look like a more intellectually smart fan. Sort of like saying OEL is a top 5 D and so amazing, or a player brings "Intangibles". That kind of attitude brought the insane "Toews is overall Better than Crosby" idea.
In 2018/19, the role of the DMan is involving skating, passing, scoring more than ever. The role is changing and some are not seeing it.

Soooo subtle as per usual.

LOL.

It would be an odd delineation if it wasn’t for your rabid frothing at the mouth abject hatred post history.

Yeah if they could focus on how to clear the crease, block a shot with the face, or hit somebody.... and hit somebody again.... How ridiculous "carrying the play", "zone entries", "passing och scoring" when you can slash hit and hit somebody, that's REAL defense.

Pfft. Pts. Mean alot. Especially when you consider how well the Leafs are playing We aren't talking about a guy racking up loser points, Rielly deserves all he is getting.

Sad really that people can t enjoy his year simply because of his jersey logo. He's been a treat, very good breakouts, timely jump ins and knack for being apart of scoring plays.
