Post-Game Talk: Jets 3 - Avs 2 in OT

Any team the Jets face in the first round will be a tough out, the first round is always a crap shoot. Beating the Avs or any others teams during the regular season is nice but means nothing really in the post season.
I wonder if the team's success in the regular season (especially the 7-0 shellacking) made the players and coaches feel like they didn't really have to work harder to win the series, and by the time they realized they were being outmatched it was too late?

I felt like last playoffs was a failure by not only the players, but the coaches. They had no answers and seemed to do nothing to try and change the tide. I'm hoping this new staff is more adaptable (I think they are) and the players finally get the sacrifice they are going to have to make if they want to have playoff success.

Very true but home ice can be a advantage so i want every advantage we can get especially with the god awful officiating we have had for alot of games.Plus i want the Jets to be at home for game 7 when we win the Cup . :naughty:

I knew my love of Pionk was justified - just love that guy. I really hope (and expect) him to re-sign here.

One of two things is happening with Snerg right now: either his foot is bothering him, or his conditioning is catching up with him. He's looked atrocious the past 2.

I really wish Nik had more clutch in his game. I'd love to see him rise to the occasion when the Jets need a goal and just grab the game by the throat. I can't complain too much, he made some really amazing second effort plays that had really positive outcomes.

The Perfetti drought is getting kind of comical now. I don't know if he needs to see a psychiatrist or something but he's not cutting it as a scoring forward. We need way more production from him.

I thought Barron was really impressive last night. He was extremely strong and played the part of Lowry as well as you could hope.

Stan had a really nice game - I didn't feel like he was exposed by the Avs speed or size at all last night, made good decisions with the puck and even had a nice little rush. I really hope he focuses on shooting more - he's got a cannon and a knack for actually getting it on net.

Appleton didn't look like he missed a second of playing time. He helps mitigate the loss of Lowry just a little bit. I'd like to see him move up the lineup a bit.

I'd love for Chevy to surprise us and beat the TDL rush to pick up a center.

Fleury wasn't great - but he hasn't played much so he gets a pass.

How long can Coghlan be loaned to the Moose without having to come back? Would hate to lose him.

Stan's been solid for a while now. Gave up that shutout goal and everyone wanted to crucify him. I feel like the 6th D spot is his.

Agree with all of your points. I've not been a big fan of Stanley and Appleton but both played well last night. Appleton really surprised me as I had been on the Sipowicz AHL Appleton stream. He's proving Sip wrong. As for Samberg, his sore foot or lack of conditioning was evident on MacKinnon's goal. C'est la vie.

Looking forward to the next two home games. Go Jets Go.

He’s had a giveaway or 2 that Helly saved. To be fair however, Samberg was horrid in the giveaway dept against Utah.
He is generally solid, but, has a mistake or 2 a game as I imagine all 5/6 do. We as fans generally focus on the one bad play as it ends up in the back of the net.
I think the team views him as their 5 meaning less likely to come out of line up than his partner.
He has for the large part cleaned up his game and doesn’t take as many penalties. At the beginning he took a lot. Still leads team in penalties.
Also as fans we generally like the shiny new thing and Stan is reliable, but he is what he is. He is not fast and shiny like tiny who may have a lot more potential if given right situation in a less risk averse system. If he went to San Jose he’d quickly jump to top 4 and we’d feel like we lost one as coaches don’t want to take risk they’d rather low risk low reward.

Solid is a bit of a stretch, he has been better but considering his previous play that isn't saying much, and whilst the 6th D spot is his because Arnie will have it no other way I don't think it's deserved, I would run Heinola/Miller any day.

Chose sleep over hockey... went to bed right after the Barron goal so I won't comment much on how the guys or the team played

Great to see them find a way to win when Connor/Schief/the PP are held scoreless. After watching highlights, both the Vilardi and Barron goals were greasy, go to the net types.. gonna have to get used to that as games tighten up down the stretch and into the playoffs

I will say that as I watched the highlight, I found myself thinking "nooooooo!" as Pionk wound up for that slapper... thank God it went in because if he missed, that puck is going the other way on an odd man rush with Makar and Mack heading down on Ehlers and Names...

You could see the Jets composure falter last night when the Avs came at them. They play scared, back way off, get hemmed in like a 5 man PK. Just desperately hanging on. So you add last year's playoff Hellebuyck to the equation and it's a runaway train of bad times.

you're clearly not watching any moose games; theys not scoring!!!
Sadly, I know, not much there in terms of talent, cupboards are bare, not much to show for a bunch of drafts, although little Chibby has shown he can score at the NHL level!

The only reason Perfetan still filling a jersey while doing squat for the past 25 games is because there is no one to replace him! More of an indictment of Chevy and the scouting staff than anything else!

The Avs are a bit of a nightmare matchup for the Jets, but a lot of other teams too

They're so quick in thr O zone putting pressure on the D that it's tough to get clean exits. Last year in the playoffs, the Jets started by just flipping the puck out into the neutral zone to relieve pressure but it resulted in so many regroup counter attacks that they switched to stretching the wingers to draw the Avs D men out into the neutral zone to at least stop them from activating down the boards.

The problem with that is that you're essentially tipping pucks deep on the far side of the red line to negate the icing, resulting in uncontrolled zone entries... which makes it hard to establish the forecheck and the Avs build up the counter attacks from there

I think ultimately you need to fly the wingers, get that uncontrolled entry, set up some version of a 1-2-2 to clog up the neutral zone to either force a turnovers there to counter attack, or at least create enough congestion that it forces a dump into the D zone and the Avs forecheckers are held up enough for the Jets D to have an extra second to create an outlet pass. That also allows Jets Fs to be back in the zone earlier to set up the defensive structure to avoid odd-man scenarios

Games like that will (hopefully) be low event, boring hockey. I'd expect to be outshot and outchanced, but with the shots coming from the outside

On the one hand, you need to tip your cap to MacKinnon and Makar, and to a lesser extent Rantanen. Tough to contain them when they’re at the top of their game.

But yeah, the five Jets packed in around the net doesn’t seem like a sustainable solution to slow them down. Especially if the Avs have Cokey the Russian Bear in the lineup wreaking havoc in front of goal.

We all talk about how dominant Mac and Mak are, but the Avs aren't all flash. There are times when there are two Avs fighting in front of our net causing a rukus. Most of the time we have zero players in front of the opposing net and certainly not causing any issues. We really need to add this to our game.

We are doing better than ever and I'm certainly enjoying this season, but this is an aspect that I would like to see lines 2, 3, 4 add to their game. I'll bet secondary scoring would pick up.

Isn't that Lowry and Nino's bread and butter? Then we have Barron who has been doing it quite well and IA won't do it bump up Barron.

Lowry in the back clapping... so his UBI doesn't seem arm related. Concussion? Didn't look like it from how he went into the boards, and concussion timeliness aren't usually rigid enough to be labeled "week to week"

Whatever it is, I have no problem with them shutting him down until after the 4 Nations. At his age and style of play, he must have a few little dings

Based on their playoff performance and Nino's comments about the team pushing too hard down the stretch last year, hopefully the coaching staff prioritizes having a rested, healthy team come playoffs instead of trying to win the President's Trophy or even the division

And on the go ahead goal. Namestnikov. Taking it to the net, going to the paint. Valardi in there too. With Ehlers on the point.

Arniel's game plan definitely involves traffic, but it's tailored to every opponent in a different way. Don't give up odd man rushes. That's the number 1 killer for the Jets, and probably Helly's biggest weakness.

Anyone want to talk about how much Mac and Company attacked De Melo's side? Love the guy, but the speed of the game is not his strength.

Also Barron had the least amount of minutes last night. Only forward who didn't hit 10 minutes ES. Or 10 minutes total, in spite of having the 2nd most PK minutes for forwards. Any idea why?
