Post-Game Talk: Jets 3 - Avs 2 in OT

Adam Lowry has to be proud of the way the boys stepped up in his absence.

I like the way Arniel reconfigured his lines to have some defensive acumen on all of them, and manage the minutes with the big loss up front.

Don't expect it to look the same on home ice, but the Jets overcame deficits and refereeing to bring this one home.

thoughts?

How do you read that? Is Josh Morrissey both the best offensive player and worst defensive player? I mean missing the net by 4 feet was a good move I guess. Samberg and Pionk were the steadier pairing. Namestnikov just goes about his business of being underrated.

3rd line not the best results, matches the eye test. Perfetti on his offside in the defensive zone isn't a good long term recipe, imo.

Would be fun if the call up Lambert for the next and let him play with Ehlers. I think he is a better fit than Perfetti/Namn

Makar is a demon. Same with the other guy #29. Jets Avs will be heart attack city in the playoffs.
Heart attack city... this implies massive loss of cardiomyocytes, with subsequent acute heart failure, and possibly eventual lusitropic dysfunction. Lusitropic dysfunction city.

I like the cut of your jib.

FIgure 1. Cardiac pressure volume loop, showing normal inotropic and lusitropic function in sundry Jets fan watching overtime last night (absence of lusitropic dysfunction).

Avs have Makar, Mac and Rat, Jets have a donkey and I couldn't be happier
Avs board complain plenty about Rantanen. They’re not fond of his game this season and many hope he leaves in Free Agency for the speculated contract he’s seeking.

3-1 against them this season, i think Colorado is thinking the same thing.
Weren’t we like 4-0 against them last year or something in regular season before they spanked us in the playoffs? Or maybe it was just that we embarrassed them 7-0 in the last game against each other that season.

I knew my love of Pionk was justified - just love that guy. I really hope (and expect) him to re-sign here.

One of two things is happening with Snerg right now: either his foot is bothering him, or his conditioning is catching up with him. He's looked atrocious the past 2.

I really wish Nik had more clutch in his game. I'd love to see him rise to the occasion when the Jets need a goal and just grab the game by the throat. I can't complain too much, he made some really amazing second effort plays that had really positive outcomes.

The Perfetti drought is getting kind of comical now. I don't know if he needs to see a psychiatrist or something but he's not cutting it as a scoring forward. We need way more production from him.

I thought Barron was really impressive last night. He was extremely strong and played the part of Lowry as well as you could hope.

Stan had a really nice game - I didn't feel like he was exposed by the Avs speed or size at all last night, made good decisions with the puck and even had a nice little rush. I really hope he focuses on shooting more - he's got a cannon and a knack for actually getting it on net.

Appleton didn't look like he missed a second of playing time. He helps mitigate the loss of Lowry just a little bit. I'd like to see him move up the lineup a bit.

I'd love for Chevy to surprise us and beat the TDL rush to pick up a center.

Fleury wasn't great - but he hasn't played much so he gets a pass.

How long can Coghlan be loaned to the Moose without having to come back? Would hate to lose him.

Makar is a great d man, and MacK is crazy good, for sure, but the Jets can play with these swine.
There are a couple things they need to figure out how to address and exploit with the Avs, things that obviously other teams have been able to do (considering their record and GF/GA):

Avs fly the zone: So many times last night you had a couple of Avs forwards flying the zone to get a man advantage break. They do it so that they can either get that, or they draw the Jets D out of the zone to relieve pressure. The Jets need to address that by looking for where the extra ice is in the zone systemically and using it.

Big line + Makar dominate the cycle and generate grade A's: With Mack, Mak, and Rat on the ice, the Avs have really been great at possession time and either breaking seams or getting the middle of the ice. This is a more difficult challenge as it's a matter of world class skill rather than a system to exploit. Maybe the Jets could try a similar play as what the Avs do and fly a forward and flip it high to a spot in the neutral zone when they get possession. That might relieve a bit of the full court press this group employs.

The Avs did also get a couple of dandy rush chances, but I think those were more fortunate than exploitative, and the Jets for the most part handled the Avs on the rush better. They just have to keep disrupting thier speed and flow through the neutral zone.

Kudos to Helly for keeping us in it, MacKinnon and Makar..
Av’s really pressured Helly but there were a lot of good defensive plays by both the Jets D and Jets forwards.
Respect from Av’s home commentators post game, but if we see them in playoffs, it won’t be a cakewalk.
DeMelo better and Samberg made a lot of good plays although IMHO his soft tissues like ligaments and tendons in his foot are still in rebuild mode.
But just think, the team did this with Lowry sidelined. Amazing game.
Go Jets!
Also Kudos to Blackwood for keeping the Avs in it. I thought he was extremely strong as well, the Jets could have built a lead if it weren't for some really nice saves.

I agree that the Jets for the most part kept the Av's to the outside but they were trying to take advantage of the Jets slower d by flying the zone and the two goals were a result of them simply using their speed to beat slower players to the net. The Av's will be a tough out in the first round of the playoffs when Mac,Mak and Rat will be their freshest.

With the way things are right now and with a bit of luck we won't need to worry about them in the first round, just have to hope someone else takes them out for us.

Would love to see the Flames or Nucks in the first round.

Yes you are correct but that was last season not this one.

Any team the Jets face in the first round will be a tough out, the first round is always a crap shoot. Beating the Avs or any others teams during the regular season is nice but means nothing really in the post season.

basically if we face the avs in the playoffs we can't lose the 2nd/3rd/4th line matchups, who ever is matched up against their top line is going to lose, they are just too good to shut down in a 7 game series
As I said in the GDT, anyone without a 55, 81 on their back needs to just get shots on net and bodies at the crease. The rest of the team doesn't have the skill to do what 55/81 do, so they have to do what they can to contribute, which is play hardnosed playoff hockey.
