Subban, Ellis, Ekholm, and Josi dominated. Clearly the 4 best d men on the ice tonight. There is a difference of reading offensive stats lines, and watching how a D dominates on both sides of the puck.

The irony in this post is tremendous, if you watched the game you saw the Leafs getting far better chances in this supposedly dominant defensive performance.

Gio is, imo, the front-runner.

After that, I can see Rielly getting some notions b/c of his start to the season (just like Burns did with his 'historic' goal-scoring pace...)

Burns and Karlsson will split votes since they're both on the Sharks. I would say that EK, in his last 20 games, has been the best D in the NHL, but he wont be getting a Norris even if he ends up with approx 80 points.

How exactly do people believe votes would get "split" between Karlsson and Burns? You don't only get to vote for one player per team.

I think it may happen with the Leafs and their forwards. It should not, but sometimes it really hurts your overall votes to have 2 players competing for 1 trophy.

He ended up with 3 A (2 primary, 1 secondary) in a 3-1 win.

And Karlson played another mins crunching game. 27:34, where he was 29:15, and 30:54 in the previous 2 games. The more he plays the better EK is. It is a bonus to have a D man that can log mins and not only handle it, but whose play improves with more mins. With half a season to go, wouldn't surprise me if EK wins another Norris if he continues to hit his stride. Who are we kidding, he has hit it. 19 points in his last 11 games, eating up mins and Sharks winning.

This Burns and EK thing is insane. I cannot recall anything like this, not even Pronger and Niedermayer.

I hate that the only measure to determine a Norris winner is points. It's a defensive award, it should be overall play.

It is NOT a defensive award. It is for the top DEFENSEMAN. As in the top player who plays on the backend. The best defence can no doubt be a killer offence.

Leads Norris rankings but isn't good enough for the all star game, huh?

When will they realize that if they're going to be having all stars, it should be about the best players?

Rielly has 1 pt in his last 5 games, Karlsson has 12 pts in his last 5 games. This is the problem of declarations at the time of this OP was created. 35+ games. Sample size will weed out the pretenders.

What exactly is a defensman supposed to be? Just someone who produces or someone who produces and defends? I said overall ability but the award is always given to the top point scorer irregardless of how he plays defensively. Which is his role.

"The James Norris Memorial Trophy, or simply the Norris Trophy, is awarded annually to the National Hockey League's top "defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position". It is named after James E. Norris, the longtime owner of the Detroit Red Wings."

Tell me that they always give the trophy as per the definition above.

So Matty Ekholm?

Well let's be fair here. He made a post about who the leader was at the time, and Rielly had a great case to be made. I don't think he was trying to definitively say Rielly would be the winner. I don't think he or any Leafs fan has predicted Rielly would end up at 90+ points. Obviously in a race like this things can change at the drop of a hat.

I've always felt that most players couldn't care less about the All Star Game and if they're not chosen they welcome the break. Sure if they're selected or voted in they'll put on a show for the kids and all that, but I doubt anyone who misses out feels "snubbed".
