While I 100% agree that Herman is the better D, and likely the best in the league, the Norris has historically gone to the best offensive D.

at this point in time, I would say Hedman is the best Dman in the league too.

But I also think Rielly is having the better season. So far, anyway.

That doesn't mean he is the best defenseman!

You wouldn't trade him in a heartbeat for one of the truly elite defensemen in the NHL if you could? You'd keep Rielly and gamble that his production alone is the best chance at making the Leafs the best team possible?

There are maybe 5 D in the league I’d be willing to trade Rielly for at their current salary and age. Hedman is one of them.

What doesn't mean he is the best defenseman? And who are you even talking about? I said I think overall Hedman is the best defenseman in the league. Are you trying to tell me you don't think that means he is the best defenseman? I know it doesn't. But it's my opinion.

I wouldn't trade Hedman, because I'm not a GM. Nor am I a Tampa fan.

But if you're talking about Rielly, no, I'm well aware having the best season does not mean he's the best defenseman. I actually said IN MY POST I think Hedman is the best defenseman, but Rielly is having a better season.

Trade Rielly? There are only a handful of dmen in the league I'd trade him for. Hedman being one. Probably Dahlin. I'm not too sure who else.

So you wont complain if Burns passes Rielly and wins the Norris? I'll make sure to remember that

I meant more your rant about Tampa taking the ultimate step and Toronto taking baby steps which is clearly in response to my comment about the other troll, not you.

Well TB won 2 playoff rds last year, they also have 7 recent playoff rd wins, including a Stanley cup appearance. You don't think TB and Hedman have bigger fish to fry than winning a Norris than Rielly who has yet to exp even 1 playoff rd win yet? Are these not a facts?

Everyone is trying to fry the same fish. When you're an elite team, currently second in the NHL, you don't go into the playoffs thinking "well lets just win a round". Smarten up.

Thank you. We can end the conversation now. Again, we have much larger hardware in our sights. I've never seen the determination I have out of this group as I do now. They have upped their game and will it translate to the post-season? Unknown. We made major changes and it is paying off on the PK. We will have to see how it all plays out but I would love to play the Leaves come playoff time.

Should be Giordano's to lose.
Then again, Eastern Bias does exist in the NHL; and will likely be part of the decision come awards day.

Rielly's offensive numbers don't bridge the gap between the actual defensive side of the game that Giordano impacts. I'll take the guy who is a monster 5v5, PP and PK.

especially considering Rielly isn't really even better offensively this year

the only reason he's ahead of him in points is that Rielly is rocking a shooting percentage upwards of 12

that's literally the difference,if they had the same shooting percentage Giordano would have one more point, and if anything Giordano should be the one expected to have the higher shooting percentage since his career shooting percentage is about 50% higher

What is your feeling on Tampa being 14th currently in GA? Leafs are 5th.

Lets see Toronto's GA playing half the season with this guy

Lmao so you’re just not reading

I don’t know, how many points would Letang have without playing with Crosby, Malkin or Kessel? How many points would Karlsson have right now without the Sharks having deadly players like Burns and Pavelski. How many points would Giordano have without monster seasons by Gaudreau and Monahan (on pace for 100+ points each) or Lindholm (on pace for over 90 points)?

You can’t just pick and choose who gets the penalized for having great teammates to play with when it seems that all of these contenders have multiple superstars to pass the puck to.

I agree with this. The reason I don’t think Rielly is a top 5 defenseman and maybe not top 10 is because of his overall game. I just don’t think he is in the same class as Many defenseman like Hedman, Letang, Jones, and several others that are much better overall defenseman than him. The award has always been a point thing so he might win but he is far from the best defenseman. If I could add a defenseman to the team he would be far down the list.

Looking at the charts and the eye test Rielly is far from the best overall defenseman. You keep going by points though, that is the best way to choose top defenseman, ha ha.

Actually It's your reading that needs attention. Hedman's got his Norris last year. He has bigger fish to fry as do the TB Lightening. They want to build on being 1 game away from the Stanley cup finals, they are not concerned about winning 1 playoff rd or a Norris trophy. Hedman and TB have already got this. Now do you get this?

Funny how in this thread people are saying Rielly is only good cause he’s on a good team but in other threads leafs are a lock to get kicked out in the first round of the playoffs. You can’t have it both ways lmfao

If he picks up his season, and passes Rielly, I 100% agree.

Hedman doesn’t have to pick up the pace and pass him to prove he is the better defenseman. Anyone with half a brain knows that. Just because Rielly has the most points do many people on these boards really believe he is even close to the best defenseman in the league. If so I am stunned. If someone wanted to make the case for best offensive defenseman then they might have a case although I would say too small of s sample size. Best overall defenseman is not even a question. Far from it.

i'm not talking about picking up his point pace. I'm talking about his game.

And it's not about better defenseman. It's better defenseman THIS YEAR.

Yep.
It's similar to Matthews, Marner being overrated, and once contract discussions come up, they deserve to get the biggest contracts in NHL history.
The hate is strong.
