hes a sht linemate. his puck support involves reaching for the puck. watch him in pursuit...all he ever does is try to poke pucks free, refuses to stick his nose in there. thats why his line consistently gets hemmed in and can never break out clean...every single time its a puck finally knocked loose and pushed just over the blueline or one guy carrying 1 on 3. he's arguably worse when someone engages him on the puck...just goes dead fish as the puck goes the other way

laf all of a sudden is looking dangerous with strome isn't surprising...he's been playing pretty well for a while, just hard to play with chytil. strome on the other hand while not anything special defensively is an active part of coverage that gives someone a clean look for a pass to break out and then strome supports well...makes things a lot easier when all 3 forwards are coming up ice together.

Chytil's clearly in a rough patch, but his play prior to this season does not warrant the criticism leveled above. He's better than this and when he's out of whatever is holding him back (or traded) we can expect him to at least get to where he was before.

If I’m remembering it right, Ola was VERY high on Miller in his draft year. Higher on him than most.

I know we shouldn’t mess with what’s working, but I think I’m ready to see Miller-Fox / Lindgren-Trouba for a few games.
Yeah, I'd be hesitant to break up the top 2 pairs as well as they're playing, but I'd like to see them try switching up the pairs to have both Jones and Lundkvist in the lineup. Think they're both already clearly better than Nemeth, Hajek, and Tinordi, and will only get better. However, probably can't get paired together, so would try:

Miller-Fox
Jones-Trouba
Lindgren-Lundkvist

3 pretty balanced pairs that should be able to matchup ok against any line (and would put Lindgren with Trouba on the PK)

Not for nothing I’m not a big analytics guy and I’ve pointed out how much I don’t like chytils game right now. His line with Laf and Gauthier don’t get hemmed in. They’re underlying numbers are some of the best on the team. They generate a ton they just don’t actually score.

I really do think he'd be better served at RW. His angles/lanes change on his off-wing and it's conducive to his playstyle. He's predictable and easy to contain coming down the left wall IMO
Yeah, most dynamic skill players usually prefer their off wing so it's weird that he doesn't.

He should really try and give it a shot on the right. Then we have him and Kakko both in the top 6.

Kreider-Zibanejad-Kakko
Panarin-Strome-Lafreniere
Goodrow-Chytil-Gauthier
Hunt-Rooney-Reaves

Then ideally we make a trade for another good RW (or longshot Kravtsov) and they can slide into Gauthier's spot. Then possibly get spicy and trade Chytil for an upgrade at 3c.

I wonder if Drury tries to flip Chytil+ for a midddle 6 center who is locked in for a few years at a decent cap hit and then he re-signs Strome. I'm not sure who the target would be there but I can definitely see the rationale.

With 2nd half mika going this team is a handful for sure

I’ll tell you something else. Lafreniere doesn’t miss often. I promise you there isn’t another lefty on the team that finishes that strome set up from where it came from on that side of the ice. Very difficult and laf always makes it look easy. He’s going to be a heck of a player.
Yeah, there is a knack Laf has for being able to finish. Everyone likes to talk down his goals like they're easy but after years of watching players miss wide open nets (Chytil and Strome are both notorious for it and are currently on the same team) being able to finish is a very real skill. Laf also always finding himself in those spots is not an accident, that's also a skill. A goal is a goal, they all count the same. It's not like at the end of the year people will be like "Well Lafreniere scored 25 goals but 10 of them were wide open nets so do they really count?"

Mika looks like he's back to his usual self. He's engaged physically, skating powerfully and he's not fumbling with the puck nearly as much. He looks like a totally different player from just a few weeks ago. The layoff was good for him I guess. You're totally right, with Mika playing like the Mika we know, this team will be tough to handle.

Agreed on the criticism that only Laf scores open goals. Everyone is free to score empty netters, they also count, but it's mostly Laf doing it. Hmm, I wonder why? Maybe because he is starting to find his sense of timing and positioning? He has a good shot if he gets space. Now he's starting to find space. A player can score with his ass for all I'm concerned if he gives 100%.

And yup on Mika. I've been advocate about giving him a break, he was still producing, the team was still winning. He wasn't himself but he never mailed it in. He lost Buch and Buch was awesome. These players aren't machines, those things hurt, especially when you have 100% chemistry with that player on your line. So he relied on producing with Kreider before finding his new game. Mika has been a big key to Kreider pouring in goals, but apparently that doesn't count if Mika isn't scoring as well.

I sincerely hope Gallant gives Mika more time on the left at the PP. Bread Man can produce from anywhere, just give Mika his favourite shooting spot. Give Zibanejad an early PP goal and you never know how many more he will score that game from wherever.

I'd like to see Laf create more, and he did that last night, but I'm not gonna criticize someone for being in the right place and the right time to put one in the back of the net.

More time in the top 6 and not playing with Offensive Black Hole Chytil will help him.

That was really such a huge win heading into a very long road trip to California. Vegas is a challenge but they wont have Patches this time around. After that, its 4 teams the Rangers should be able to bank points against. 4-1 road trip here could give us a huge cushion

GREAT overall game from the team and Geo.

Kakko must recognize no passing lane on that 3 on 1 and either rip it off the pass or make a move on the goalie. Wanting to get the slam dunk goal on a 3 on 1 is ok, but wanting it so badly you don't get a SOG is not.

Agreed 100%. He could score 10 empty net goals, and I'd still count them. I don't care if he scores pretty or just finishes off the hard work of his teammates with a casual tap-in goal. All of it is valuable.

Putting the puck in the net is putting the puck in the net. Doesn't matter if it's Strome getting set up by brilliant feeds from Panarin, or Mika shooting it down the ice while 5 on 6 to end the game after opponents pull the goalie.

Heck, how many times have you seen Kreider dangle around people to set up his own goals over the last two seasons? Zero? Me too. He deflects pucks, gets rebounds, and bangs in tap-in goals on the far post. They all still count.

I hate when people rag on players like Laf for scoring in situations where he is supposed to score. Heaven forbid lol.

Scoring in the NHL is hard no matter what. If Chytil or Guathier finished like Laf each would be 10 times the player they are.

Is Laf demonstrating high-end elite talent? Not yet? Fine. But don't criticize the player for scoring wrong. Because there is no such thing. Finishing plays is a skill too. And it's often what separates a top 6 player from a bottom 6 player.

Miller had one horrific turnover but was otherwise good.
Yes he did. No mention of the Rooney brain fart on the pk that forced Geo to make the save on McD. Rooney because he pots a few goals is overrated on this Board. I want to see Barron with Hunt and Reaves, and Reaves scratched against teams where we can go without his presence. Reeves is responsible for much of the time his line spends in the D zone; too slow with poor puck skills.

I love Goodrow.. Got an insane contract and is clearly out to justify every penny of it. Plays wing/center 4th line to scoring line, is a willing revenge taker. Fights. Guy is a 1 man total team effort. Seems like a guy who would make a great Captain. When is his birthday?

This is exactly why I want Gourde on the team as well.

I think Miller looks like a 21 year old that has all the talent in the world and just needs to find the consistency of playing 82 games. He’s played 20 in college and not much more a year prior to that. Once he gets that man strength and endurance he’s a first pair dman all day.

guys here forget these kids are babies. What they look like at 23 24 25 26 that’s the sweet spot

Very good points. Plus defencemen typically take longer to develop/adjust than forwards. I think it's very telling how much ice time Turk gave him against McDavid and later McDavid and Draisaitl . For those that didn't notice he was on the ice a minute more than Fox and 6 minutes more at even strength. A great game for K'Andre Miller.

Yeah, that knack is a skill and not a detriment. The problem isn't that he's scoring too many one-timers, it's that he's not doing enough other stuff. Last night he had a very nice primary assist and that is a part of his game that has been missing.

He does need to start making some wow scoring plays with the puck on his stick eventually.

One of the only times I screamed at my TV last night (I know, right?) was when he passed up an awesome chance in the slot. But that awareness will come with time.
