I'm actually shocked. Who's supposed to be my #1 LW on NHL 14 now? Ugh.

I think Grabovsky is next. I will not be surprised if this is a trend. As the KHL gets more of a foothold in Europe & competition starts to near the NHL's... what's the incentive for guys to leave their home country, play in a country they're unfamiliar with across the globe?

The Russians are treated poorly while they're here. Don Cherry & Mike Milbury are a couple prime examples... obviously not the rule... but there are plenty of people who don't like Russian players (and russians in general)

Wow devils better hope they don't end up with a high pick because they don't have it

They will though, they finished with the 9th pick last year and now they just lost their only above average player. Not to mention they're playing in the most stacked division by far.

Man, I just can't get over how absolutely ****ed the Devils are right now and into the near future.

They now have no real scoring to speak of, other than a 37 year old aging Elias. Their pool of offensively-gifted prospects is extremely shallow, and they don't have their top pick in next years draft, and with Kovalchuck bolting, could potentially be in the top 5 of the 1st round.

If this happened to any other fanbase than the Devils, I could empathize.

The best part of all these rants are the fans that think Kovy owes them something.

They like to say YOU SIGNED A CONTRACT! PLAY IT! HONOR YOUR CONTRACT

Simply put the NHL has already altered his contract once. It's long enough that it will be altered again in the next lockout.

I don't blame ANY NHL player who considers playing in another league... Especially one based in their home country.

Kovy doesn't owe the Devils or the fans a damn thing. He's an employee. Nothing more.

Plus having to adjust to another culture and country is very difficult. Katie Baker had a great article on that subject (both sides of the North American-Russian equation) from the WJC over at Grantland.

A place.

So, am I right that they don't have their 1st round pick next season as part of the penalty of signing Kovy to that deal? If so, that pick is shaping to be a very good pick that they DESPERATELY NEED now more than ever.

I am laughing so hard over this! I know it's wrong to get enjoyment from other peoples misery but I am just drinking this in and enjoying it like finely aged wine. So, Devils fans still glad they kept Kovy and let Parise go? How's that workin' out for ya?

This feels like some kind of karmic retribution raining down on that franchise. Parise bailed out JUST IN TIME.

they still have Zidlicky!

I am in utter disbelief at Kovalchuk... just wow.

Feel bad for Devil's fans.
I'm not shocked at all. He's shady. When the lockout ended, he didn't want to come back to the States. Some of his comments painted the picture that he was happy playing back home. At least Heatley grew into a player who was respected by his teammates in San Jose and Minnesota. Kovie just crapped on a team that went way out of their way to keep him. They may have lost Parise as a result of that whole fiasco. They got screwed more ways than one, and Kovie won't give a damn. He's too busy counting his money. I realize he may not "owe" them anything, but it's a thing called respect. It wasn't that long ago when he signed that big contract. If he had ANY thoughts or temptations about playing back home, he should have spoken up.

**** those guys. Go to the Devils board and read the "Will Parise be booed" thread. That should change your feelings a little. I guess they will have to come up with a new chant as well, dont think "Kovy's better" is gonna work anymore.
