Oh man the Sabres are offering up Vanek to them :biglaugh: imagine the hatred we would really get if we signed Vanek in the offseason. They would absolutely never trust a person with Minnesota roots ever again in their state

Wow, I'm in shock. Out of all the people that could announce retirement, Kovy wasn't even on my mind at all. This is so much out of left field that it blows my mind.

Okay, but if they knew Kovy was gone, why didn't they keep Clarkson? I guess this explains why they gave $5m to Clowe but he's not a big scorer anymore. I suppose they can load up on leftovers like Brunner, Grabovski, Antropov, etc.

I think Clarkson wanted to go home and play in Toronto.

Well, it did free up $6M or something in cap space. With no 1st round pick now this year, they could be severely screwed.

2010: Martin leaves for Pittsburgh
2011: No one
2012: Parise
2013: Kovy
2014: Brodeur (most likely)
2016: Schneider (most likely in FA if this team is sucking)
2017: Elias (most likely b/c of age and he hits UFA) Zubrus/Volchenkov(UFA)

That is a really rough half a decade right there for perennial talent after giving up this years 1st rounder and next years now because of the cap stuff with Kovy :(

And just looked at capgeek. MAN that is a very sad roster right there. 10 players are signed for 2014-15 season so far.

How will the cap recapture work, should be pretty big no?

EDIT: apparently its low since he retired so early into the contract.

Just the retirement penalty until the end of the deal

Which is like $4M or something from what I saw in the main thread. For like 10 more years :biglaugh: and we thought Parrish's was bad

God, in a way he ****ed them HARD. They could have used a buyout on him and been completely removed of that contract.

Not gonna lie, a part of me wants to go over on the Devils board and just laugh my ass off to my heart's content. If it's ever been possible to receive more than just an infraction for something, that would be it.

I feel bad for the fans. I mean it's entertaining to see guys get their comeuppance, but this is a pretty big blow. That team just looks bleak going forward. Parise leaves, Kovalchuk leaves, Brodeur is about to retire, no exciting young players in the pipeline (that I know of anyway)...

Whatever happened to Adam Larsson?

He's still there. Got Shepped a little over the last couple years.

I just remember thinking that the possibility of Kovy bolting to Russia was bad when the lockout ended. Seemed like he had a little bit more fun in the KHL this year than anyone wanted to admit?

I know Leipold will probably never mess with Russians again, but I wonder how many other owners/GM's follow suit after this craziness?
