Good write up. Yeah I knew going in that I didn’t wanna pick a Manchester team because if the very reasons you said. I enjoy watching them because of how well they’re run and how prestigious the clubs are (Man City being more recent) but no way I wanted them to be one of my teams that I root for. Halaand is fun to watch but rubs be the wrong way personality wise for some reason he seems extremely arrogant. Kinda ironic to say because I like Grealish for some reason and he seems pretty arrogant as well. I’ve never seen someone get mugged on the pitch as much as he does though lolnah, pretty sure that @Jesus comma Brodin follows one of those effete southern clubs, or maybe a team from another league altogether. I'm the Newcastle guy. Been following them for years, when they were REALLY shit. Basically used to give the other team the ball at the beginning of the game, turtle, and hope for a draw. They are an easy follow, now, because they are good, well run, likeable(unless you are a Sunderland fan), have a crazy fan base, tough, have an iconic uniform, and lots of good young talent that bodes well for the future.
They aren't the team Man City is, but they are probably the best team in the world right now when all their players are healthy. Halaand is best striker, De Bruyne the best midfielder, and his replacement, Rodri, is almost as good.
Liverpool is also really, really, good, and have been the only team to rival MCI in recent years. I do think that the bloom is somewhat off the rose there, though. There have been very strong rumours that Salah will leave after this season to play in the Saudi league, Van Dijk is showing mild signs of age, and overall, the team seems to be getting fed up, and breaking down under Klopp's pressing style. I used to like Klopp, but when under pressure, he's started acting like an ass at times.... not Mourinho level ass, but still, dampens the appeal, for me.
Most newcomers to the EPL pick one of the two Manchester teams, one of the top London teams( Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham), or Liverpool to follow. Those picking Crystal Palace, Burnley, Southampton, or the like only do so because of some personal connection to the team, or out of a desire to not run with the pack. In years past it was risky, as those teams often get relegated, which would mean it was near impossible to watch them on TV, but now most Championship games are streamed.
I follow NUFC because I couldn't see following the crowd(back then EVERYONE followed Man U), loved the B & W stripes, relate to the blue collar ethos, and some of my family comes from Northumberland, in the the far NE of England above Newcastle. I used to say that I was doomed to follow them. What's happening now is like a dream...
NUFC just doesn’t strike me as a team a lot of outsiders or Americans choose as their team for some reason (it’d be like rooting for the Packers as an outsider) and I wanted to go against the grain a bit in choosing a team and felt like NUFC fit that bill. Someone once described Geordies as people from Jersey Shore and that kinda made me laugh a bit but dont know how close that description is but the way they love going to games without a shirt on and no matter the weather it seems kinda spot on.
NEwcastle has some nice looking kits like their blue ones and their green ones i just cant get past the black and white stripes and how they remind me of footlocker employees or refs in the NFL. My own weird shtick though.
