I don't think you need to have played a down in your life to recognize good talent player-wise. He has a track record going back to 2013 of positive impact on player personnel. Bringing in a non-traditional background to me is a positive.
I think it is less important in football to have a guy that's been around the game than in the other big-4 of sports. The rosters and staffs are so much bigger it's more about managing things than player evaluation. NFL teams have more coaches/coordinators than the other sports have players on their rosters (at least it seems that way).
He needs to have traditional football guys under him and listen to their input/feedback.
