Ray walked the first two then gave up a double but settled in nicely striking out the next three. He threw over 98MPH on one pitch.

While he said all the right things about the Jays Im really of the mindset he didnt want to play in AL East during his reclamation season.

Saying that Who knows for sure what took place....

Paxton had an interview on the fan where he said he was interested in playing here and the Jays expressed interest in him as well, but never offered him a contract.

It’s weird they DFA him earlier. Odorizzi signs and a few hours later we add Payamps back.

Wonder if they were in on Odorizzi to the end to only lose out and go and grab Payamps back.
I'm interested to see what their plans for him are. SP depth makes sense at first glance but he's essentially a 2 pitch pitcher with the occasional changeup. Pitchers List alluded to him needing to bring his slider up about 5 MPH to make him an effective pitcher in the majors, I wonder if we'd see something close to that with a bullpen transition.

If he's throwing 98 with his control and pitch mix, he may be going ahead of Rocker...

6'5 and 250lbs vs. 6' and 195lbs. But the concern with Max Meyer was his size as well and still went really high, so wouldn't be surprised if Lieter went 1.01.

I still think they were worried about his medical reports.

Even so, 1 year at 8.5M isn't a bad gamble. Though I understand if they weren't comfortable with it. I wonder if the Jays thought they could get better value with Odorizzi. But due to injury, Houston upped their offer.

FG predicted Odorizzi, Paxton and Porcello to have a similar projected fWAR 1.6 to 2 for 2021.

Paxton got 1 year at 8.5M with incentives.
Odorizzi pretty much got 3 years at roughly 10M+ per.

And Porcello is still on the market. He has the best 2020 of the three, is durable with no injury concerns and he may go for a 1 year deal at 5M or less, perhaps a minor league deal. That's not bad value at all.

I spoke Semien over LeMahieu into existence due to better value and upside, now I'm doing the same with Porcello.

I think it's clear the Jays wanted to improve their floor from the pitching side without making commitments. Which leaves them open to make commitments when better pitcher are available next year and allows us to see what our prospects can do in the first half of the year.

You have to think at least one of Ray, Matz, Stripling and Roark are good - hopefully 2. And at least one of Kay, Thornton, Hatch, Zeuch and maybe Merryweather push themselves into the conversation. And one of Manoah and SWR show value/readiness.

Hopefully you can go into the deadline with at least 3-4 guys that you trust and you can make trades at the deadline if needed.

A majority of the mocks I've seen had Lawler, Rocker and Leiter in the top 3. But I have seen every variation with even Lawler going number 1. Leiter and Lawler look destined for the top 3. So does Rocker but I've seen a mock or 2 where Rocker has dropped to the lower half of the top 10. It will be interesting to see how this draft shakes out.

Leiter is a good bet to go 1. But Lawler is right there too. Pittsburgh likes their position players and have some good pitchers already in the system. Lawler vs Leiter will be interesting for them.

I get that it's not ideal, but it's more the Pearson/Kay/Merryweather/Hatch breakout and Ray/Matz/Stripling/Roark bounceback and SWR/Manoah take a step forward and they can add more pitching if needed at the deadline... basket.

I don't know... the strategy they're going with is basically the opposite of an "eggs in one basket" move.

Exactly. And I have no interest in Jake frickin Odorizzi taking up that much salary or blocking SWR or Manoah or Kloff over the next 3 years.

It's not quite Tommy Milone v Thomas Milone. But it's close.

Why not Cole Hamels as an invite who could win a spot?

Im sure the Jays would have interest but Hamels may not.

Hamels wouldnt waive his trade clause to allow the Philles to entertain trade offers from Toronto prior to the 2015 season.

Blue Jays haven't asked about Hamels 'in months' - Sportsnet.ca

I vaguely remember Halladay trying to convince Hamels to consider Toronto.

AA was after Hamels for years but its likley he didnt want to come to Canada.

Hamels refusing to waive led to this moment;
