While I don't want to trade Severson, I would take this package - I think Bear is a very underrated player and that pick allows NJ to trade a 1st for a top winger/goalie while still maintaining their own top ~10 pick.

I'm pretty meh on Suzuki, NJ has plenty of forward prospects playing in the AHL so another one doesn't really move the needle. He is a center though, which we need, as I expect Mercer's shift to wing will be permanent.
Bear’s skating is pretty iffy tho and needs a defensive babysitter, I’m not sure we would have much interest in him or who we would pair him with.

Why do they need a new coaching staff before deciding on severson?

cause no one looks good defensively in their current system apart from Siegenthaler who's a specialist. A better system could turn Severson into a really good top4 dman, imo.

He's a fine second pairing as it is. His trade value isn't going to get better a year later as a rental. Not to mention there is no guarantee that he looks a ton better regardless

It seems unlikely they’re going to sign him for what he’ll probably command on the UFA market. A futures based package is probably going to be the best value the Devils can get, and it would be poor asset management to turn down better value just because it’s “futures.”

A team trading for one guaranteed season of Severson is likely a contender loading up for a cup run…those teams usually aren’t dealing good roster pieces or swapping an equivalent RHD just to make a lateral move. Sure, it could be a non-playoff team looking to shore up their RD position and hoping to re-sign him, but again, those teams aren’t likely to deal a valuable roster piece either. Real “hockey trades” are rare in todays NHL, so I wouldn’t be holding out hope that’s the kind of deal Severson would be dealt for.

Besides, if a player coming into the lineup in 2026 has already missed Hughes (will be 24) and Hischier’s (will be 27) primes….well then the Devils have a lot more to worry about than their RHD depth.
Severson isnt a UFA this year, so we dont have to trade him until the deadline next year and thats exactly why it shouldn't be for futures this offseason just to make us worse next season

The only way we should be taking strictly futures for Damon Severson is if its in February of 2023

And he's good. He can be a 2nd pair RD.
Then why isnt he somewhere else?

I doubt Edmonton moves him and spends 4.5mil to replace him if hes as good as you say; hes a third pair defenseman as of today in Carolina playing 15 a night

They aren't taking any risk in that offer an underperforming prospect and what could be the last pick in the first round.....Severson's value is higher than that imo

Now that is fair. If the value isn't right for you, the value isn't right for you. Suzuki has been underwhelming for sure.

This would be around my expectation if we traded him this year though. Very solid offer from OP.

I mean, at what point do we ever attempt to be competitive? Are we every year gonna move our expiring vets for futures and perpetually say 'next year is our year'?

Losing Damon Severson takes an already bottom-10 team and makes us worse. So if im trading him it cannot be before the trade deadline of next year unless you have a replacement for him via trade or FA. otherwise good luck telling Jack Nico and the gang were sitting back on our laurels again and accepting another high draft pick

I find it very hard to believe that Ethan Bear is a 2nd pair defenseman that Edmonton, a cap strapped team, didnt want to keep over paying Barrie 4.5m and then only Carolina had a good offer for them, a team where he cant even play the second pair. Hes

Hes probably very well supplanted in the role hes fit for, and thats bottom pair. I dont need to trade Severson to experiment and sees if hes better all while he needs to be paid for his best season yet and that deal would take him to UFA

honestly bear has a better chance to replace severson than boeser or garland.

hughes most likely will enter his prime in 2026. he will be 25 by then and hischier only 27. the lack of patience in the devils fan base is annoying. if you want to contend next season or the year after for the cup, you better be ready to trade some of hischier, hughes, mercer and more than half the farm. stanley cup champs normally don't have a roster full of toddlers, who are close to puberty.
so your aim is to build a contender that rears its head as our captains sweetheart deal expires and Jack is halfway through his, and going to need almost double his contract?

Sure we wont be contenders in the next year or two, but you can be damn well sure we won't be anything near competitive in the next three years if you keep trading off anyone over 26 whos nearing UFA , and only ever getting futures back who dont help us anytime soon replace what we lost

this trade cant be about maximizing Seversons value, it needs to be about stabilizing this team in the next year or two as we turn a leaf. Otherwise you begin to piss off youngins who havent seen a winning culture since pre-covid

To be honest, just because the team sucks doesn't mean you should resign everyone, even if he's a solid player. Just because Damon is a quality defender right now doesn't mean that resigning him at age 29 long term is the right call. We just went through this with palms.

If the team doesn't see a long term future with Damon past next year, they should absolutely be flipping him at this deadline given value differences. This should be something that Fitz has already thought about. If the devils trade him, than clearly Fitz has made a decision on what to do with him.

Oh im fully on board moving Damon btw, I dont want him signed

I just cant afford to move him before the deadline next year because then were essentially canning yet another season, for what a player coming up in 2026 on their ELC?

Jack and co. Are not going to buy what Fitz is selling if he leaves a hole open at RD2 and it ends up costing another season. That will seriously hamper his future with this team if he did that

Severson ain’t that important. Re-signing him is shortsighted.

nowhere i suggested to trade severson in my post. actually you said you would trade him for a player like garland or boeser, which i wouldn't support, as i think wing will be the position, where we have to live with lower paid players. from a roster building process, if we aim to run hughes, hischier and mercer down the middle long term and still field a competent defense and goaltender tandem, who stops a puck here and there, i don't see the cap space to offer big ticket deals to more than one or two wingers. i rather keep bratt over both suggested vancouver players.

i don't think the devils will keep all 4 summer 2023 fa defensemen. at least one, most likely two, of severson, siegenthaler, graves and smith will be either traded or walk. the order i mentioned them, is the order, i would like to keep them today. severson because we have no rhd to ever replace him in the organization. siegenthaler because he might resign mid/long term in the summer for a reasonable cap hit, as he still lacks the standing in the league.

if there is an offer for graves at the deadline, which is substantly better than, what the devils paid last summer, i wouldn't be opposed to move him. for smith there is probably no great deal available right now. but at the end of his current contract, he will still offer an interested team a few years of control and he could fetch a reasonable return, when he rebounds a bit next season. graves would most likely go for futures. but smith might be exchanged for a veteran in the summer 2023.

I dont want to re-sign him, for the record

I want him traded when/if we are out of the playoffs next season. Id rather get less futures in 2023 or lose him for free for a playoff run than lose him now and be even worse next year if he isn't replaed

Id much prefer to keep Graves, as our left side has a plethora of middling guys with Shakir being the only suitable candidate to replace him in the future (as of now, one of the youngins could impress)

Severson Im fine with trading but it cannot be now when we need him the most

my hope is still okhotyuk develops into something more than graves is today and it looks like you count on l. hughes to either be years away from the nhl or stay on the right side, when he comes to the nhl.

Well, you also have to consider that if you hold on to Severson and then trade him next deadline you wouldn’t get nearly as good of a return. Sooo it’s kind of one or the other to some degree.

And that is exactly what I am advocating for; the focus being on next year's success more than Severson's value

Im of the school of mind that the players getting important games to end the year next year is better for their development than getting another 1st to play with, which we can still get for him at the 2023 deadline I think; it just wont have Ethan Bear who is nice but idt is a middle pair guy and Id rather not gamble on it and drop to bottom-10 next year again early on

This is where I'm struggling....are we playing meaningful games if we are sellers at the deadline and trading Severson next year?

If you're expectation is that you expect us to be sellers next year, that would suggest you don't think we are going to be all that good, and that's with Severson?

So I guess the question is...are you willing to lose Severson for nothing if the team is doing okay (lets say within 5 points of the final playoff spot) at the deadline next year and decide to add or not sell. If you are, I don't necessarily agree with it, but that would make sense.

Perhaps Im not wording all of this too well, it has been over some number of posts now so even I can get lost

Im not okay with trading Severson from now until we are officially out of a playoff race next year, unless the offer is involving someone who is as proven as Damon (no matter the position). So futures dont do it for me from now until we dont need him for a playoff race in 2023 anymore

However, Im also of the mindset that we should keep him at the trade deadline next year if we are in a playoff race with an actual chance; not just some 15-25% chance if we rally. Id rather get zero value for Damon and possible playoff experience, minimum being meaningful games into April, then sell on him and be a bargain bin team again come January of next year.

So TLDR I guess would be that I value next year's success as a team and getting meaningful games over what we get for Damon Severson

If the Devils are competing for a spot in the playoffs and actually make it, Severson would probably more aligned to re-sign with us after enduring the worst stretch of Devils hockey since the 80's. Only issue is it that it can't be like the 17-18 year where it was a blimp on the radar with how Hall carried us.
