Oh, I see-- I wouldn't recommend aligning expectations to Fire Emblem-- they may seem similar, but they're not at all, in terms of appeal, IMO. Tactics Ogre is a lot more about methodical/obsessive over-preparation, character customization/development, and experimentation with permutations of class and ability combos in a limited number of units. Fire Emblem seems more task and army/resource-management driven, where there are a lot of things, but each thing is somewhat limited in what they can do.I thought that was just an auto play function? When I pushed it it didn’t speed up at all. (it's not turbo speed or anything, but it should be snappier)
By cookie cutter I mean every unit is a Warrior, Cleric, Archer, Wizard, or Valkyrie with a different name attached. Again very early in the game and I’ve never played it before but I was hoping for more of a fire emblem type where there’s more classes.
Personally though, while I find the gameplay addicting and think it has a good amount of depth, I primarily love Tactics Ogre for the delivery, tastefulness, and writing (except for maybe the Vyce character, who has some odd inconsistency problems). For my money, the writer, artist, and composer are each individually in contention for being the best in their respective fields in videogames (my favorite creative trio in the medium). The attention to detail and care in the charming sprites, backgrounds, icons, and UI really wins me over, and story-wise, there's a ton of richness and beauty in the way that a focused theme is explored through different paths/NPC perspectives, and text blurbs in the Warren Report.
It's very niche and not for everyone (even if you get what it's trying to do), but incredibly rewarding and awe-inspiring for those that it caters to, IMO.
