The thing is: where else do you put him? There wasn't a place to put him on the team and the Mensa candidates running the team didn't or wouldn't acknowledge it. Putting on that fourth line is the only thing they could have done to protect from being embarrassed nightly.

Simply put, he is not ready for the NHL but the Islanders kep him. His skating is subpar. His timing is a beat too slow. He's weak on skates and looks like a newborn deer if somebody meets him at the line. BUT, he goes to the right areas, finishes his checks, mixes it up and is a big body. Those are positive signs. Of a top 6 forward? No. But, it's unfair to him to judge him now. He was equipped and shouldn't have been in the league.

No, I agree that this is not on Capuano. He was forced to carry several AHL-level players this year and the results are not surprising. There were a couple of short stretches where Nino was skating better and more involved in the flow. If he had been moved up off the 4th line, then maybe possibly he could have scored a goal or two, gotten some confidence and started something positive. But I can't second guess the coach on this.

IMO when people look at Nino play and don't see a very dynamic talent, they assume that his upside is limited and was overdrafted at 5. This misunderstands his value - he was never going to be a top-10 or top-20 point scorer, but he brings a unique and desired skillset: a 6'2 power forward who plays with an edge, should score 25+ goals and is good in all 3 zones. Not too many players like that in the league.

Nino should have only made the Islanders if he earned a top 6 role...He did not and was Promised he could stay in the NHL. Like I said, his skating is really what he needs to work on....His size is great.

I just hope we find out that he had a sick relative in switzerland and thats why Garth let him in the NHL so he could send money to his sick Family member....I doubt its true, but hey that would

What I don't get is with the season having been over for quite some time, why aren't they just giving him 15+ minutes a night on different lines? Isn't now the time to play around & see what may or may not work for the future? Give him a few shifts with Tavares & PAP. Give him a few with Bailey & Nielsen. How can it possibly hurt the Islanders chances? And maybe if the kid plays with some real talent and I don't know, maybe scores a point or 2 in the final 2 games of this lost season, he'll at least he'll finish the season with a smile on his face.

It never made any sense that he was in the NHL this year. It made even less sense that he was playing with fringe NHL talent. But the fact that he continues to play with these players now just boggles my mind. Only way the Isles could have handled his development any worse was if they put him in the NHL last year.

How to ruin a good prospect.....a book written by the New York Islanders. Theres absolutely no reason that he wasn't sent back to junior after the free 9 game trial they had. Feel so bad for their fans because the team pulled another in the long line of their **** ups with how they handled this kid.

At this point how could the kid have any confidence at all? 1 pt in 52 games has to have crushed any confidence he originally had. I actually thought he looked okay in a game vs the Pens last week but he missed a couple real good scoring chances in that game as well. I do agree that they should be putting him out there at least 15 mins a night at this point just to get him some more ice time though.

Since the Islanders are nowhere near the playoffs, it would have been nice to see him getting top 6 minutes in the last few games, just to see if he can build a bit of confidence going into the offseason.

While not exactly "top-6", Nino has been playing with Grabner and Pandolfo of late and, dare I say it, has been looking much, much better. Still no points, but you can clearly see a quality power forward in the making.

This year was all about learning for Nino and what he does in this and subsequent offseasons will determine whether he "busts" or not. I don't care what anyone says...players will rise and fall, excel and bust due to their own will and determination.

1 point in 52 games is unheard of, even for a 4th liner. Your typical 4th line scrub will still pop in about 5 goals and maybe another 10 assists in that amount of time.

He's a great prospect. It would seem as though the Islanders are doing everything they can to ruin his potential.

Niederreiter has lost his swagger and the way he's been developed in NY I doubt he'll get it back with that team.

Just another day in office for Garth Snow.

2nd line, but a very offensive one with former Senator Roman Wick and Michael Liniger. One goal was a PP-goal.

"Typical" isn't the right word. Maybe your GOOD 4th liner can put up 15-20 points in a season. For example, take a look at most of New Jersey's fourth liners for the past 5 years. Eric Boulton was your typical 10 point tough guy in Atlanta. 51 games with New Jersey this year and not a SINGLE point. It's not unheard of.

The same thing that happened to MPS is happening to him. Skilled guys like Nino need top6 time with top6 linemates. If you play them with plugs, they aren't going to be able to beat NHL defenders to generate scoring chances on their own. They aren't Bures or Crosbys.

Next season, when raises for key players come into effect, I don't think that the Islanders will have over-the-hill players on the roster, and Niederreiter could improve. But the floor is part of the reason why Niederreiter played all season in the NHL...when I think he would have been better in Portland for one last season in the WHL.

Rule: If he isn't expected to be up all season - slide the contract!

I don't think it's just good 4th liners who typically produce more than that. I think the only 4th liners who produce as little (or in Boulton's case, less) as Niederreiter are the designated goons who only play 4 to 6 minutes a night for pretty much one reason.

I can't think of any other fourth liner who is actually relied upon for more than his fists, and who got near 10 minutes per game of ice, who produced as little as Niederreiter. Heck, Craig Adams is an offensive black hole for the Pens, yet even he was able to produce 18 points this year.

I don't blame the kid. The Isles really dropped the ball keeping him up when he clearly wasn't ready. But the fact is his production was downright brutal, even for a fourth liner.

Agreed. Even a blind squirrel finds a few acorns. Nino had 1 point in 50+ games this year. From watching some of the games, he was not even close to looking like an NHL player. There are way too many excuses on HF for Nino with his season.

With that said, The way the Isles management handled this situation with Nino has got to be the worst way to develop a prospect. However, most promising players would have produced some points and have at least shown signs of being a good player. It seemed all Nino did was circle, chase the puck and then go to the bench.

Press says the Isles will be pushing hard to sign 22/23 yr old Petrov and bring him over.

Nino turns 20 in Sept. Old enough for Bridgeport.
I expect Nino to be playing for Thompson in Bridgeport next season.

I thought they were pushing hard to sign Petrov the last 2 summers too?
