I've been looking hard to found a nhler that a bad year in is first full season.
I found the following;

Jason Bonsignore- drafted 4th overall in 1994-

1st year he played- 1994-1995- 1gp- 1 G-0 A- 1 pt
2nd year- 1995-1996- 20gp- 0G-2A- 2 pts

Never played more then 35 games

Aaron Ward- drafted 5th overall in 1991
1993-1994- 5gp-1g-0A- 1 pt
1994-1995- 1gp-0G-1pt
1996-1997- 49 gp-2G-7A- 9pt

Played over 800 games with less then 155pts

Mike Gillis- drafted 5th overall in 1978

1978-1979- 30gp-1G-7A-8pts
1979-1980-40gp-4g-5A-9pts

Mike Crombeen- Drafted 5th overall-1977

1977-1978-48gp-3G-4A-7pts

Joe Murphy- 1st overall in 1986

1986-87-5gp-0G-1A- 1pt
1987-1988-50gp-10G-9A-19pts

Finish is career with 528 pts in 779gp

Cam Connor-5th overall in 1974th

1978-1979-23gp-1G-3A-4pts

he was a bust

So I think there's not one player that was drafted in the top prospect and finish with less then 5 pts and wasn't a bust. I just couldn't get one and hopefully someone can prove me wrong. Hopefully this was helpfull!!

Ward's a defenseman so he's kind of pointless to compare. I think the problem with Nino isn't that his numbers are bad but that he's basically wasted a year of development.

Just curious, why comparing these three?

I guess because they're big wingers, though I'd say both are better skaters than Nino (but he has time to work on that).

Quick, share with us tonight's mega million numbers.

Don't know what's your problem, you didn't write anything meaningful in the whole thread yet keep criticizing all other posts... So make your own projection and we can come back in two years. So far, you're just making excuses. Fact is, Nino got 1 point in 50 games! One would expect at least some fluke assists. Hell, even Tim freakin' Wallace got 1 point playing on the same line in 19 less games (and now is playing just fine in Tampa). Make all the excuses in the world, player with elite talent would be able to put up some points playing even with Reasoner and Pandolfo. I'm not calling him bust, but with this level of production, it's clear that Nino doesn't have elite talent. So tell us mister, what is Nino's potential in your opinion?

As said earlier he was rushed.
He wasnt ranked 5th in pre-draft lists. Burmistrov was ranked higher in all lists i had a look at, but because he was picked so high they thought a top5 pick should be able to make NHL right away. Well he wasnt a top 5. Hopefully 1-2 more seasons he gets back to his potential, but i see many players picked after him having a bigger impact in the long term. Actually i see half of the rest 1st round picks doing better than him.

Bobby Mac had him 7th, ISS had him 6th, it's not like he was an off the board pick. He was also higher than Burmistrov on both those lists, not sure what lists your looking at.

I personally wanted one of Fowler/Gormley/Gudbranson leading up to the draft, but I was OK with the Nino pick.

He should be in Portland right now though, he has no business being in the NHL, especially getting the 4th line minutes he's been getting. It's pretty obvious he's only up for his cap hit(thanks wang).

when i saw him play at the wjc in saskatoon i loved his game, when he was on the ice i knew it i didnt even have to see his jersery number or anything you could see the difference in skill, and from that on i watched himm anytime i could, i thought he'd become my favorite player in the nhl....... but on the + side bartshci has 3 times the prodution in 45 less games :D (then saw bartschi and me being a flame fan, i wanted him wayyyy before the draft was soo happy we got him)

Solid pick, that shouldn't even be close to playing in NHL right now, great job Isles most likely ruining one of my favorite prospects.

Small chance he becomes what he could have become

Moving up off the 4th line and playing with better players has helped.

Still, I agree it has been a wasted yr for him and imo,the biggest reason Cappy needs to go.I expect him to spend most of next season in Bridgeport.

I would blame Wang/Snow more than Capuano. He shouldn't even be on the team, but Wang is so cheap, he's using Nino's performance bonuses (that he has no chance to earn) to get to the cap floor.

I don't really blame Capuano for not giving him more ice time. He's not ready for it and giving him more time isn't going to help them win games, or help Capuano keep his job.

Calling him a bust now is silly. I never expected the kid to be an 80+ point player TBH. I see a lot of Ryan Malone in his game.... it's going to take time though. They need to send him to the AHL next season and leave him there.

Islanders rushed him, now his development is behind. He should have spent the whole year back in juniors.

Hes on the 4th line with Marty Reasoner and Jay Pandolfo playing like 9 min a night........

When he was on his rehab stint in the AHL(early in the season) he had 3 goals in 5 games. He was playing top 6 min.......If he was playing with Tavares or even Frans Neilsen he would have more points......The Line he is on creats no offense what so ever, They spend most of thier shift checking and playing defensive game....Im not worried about Nino, Im just upset because I wish the Isles would have put him into a better position to succeed....

This seriously has to go down as one of the worst statistical seasons ever. One point and the second worst +/- in the league despite playing under 10 minutes a night and 30 games less than a full season.

It's a shame, but I don't think it's quite irreparable. Nino has skill, it just seems to me that he's lacking the kind of physical maturity that he's always had, and the game is just too quick. From everything I've seen of him in Portland and at the WJC, his best games came when he could be more physical, maybe if he gets two years and some more physical maturity he can at least hope to rekindle enough of that into some 20g, 40-ish point type seasons.

EDIT: I'm not really saying he's not physical now so much as that I think if he can continue to get better, he's going to start converting on opportunities that he can't create yet.

About 4 games ago,he was a healthy scratch.4 games ago :shakehead

I can understand Cappy being concerned about his job and not having faith in a 19 yr old. I can see why he'd want to give older players plenty of icetime early in the season, but by the time the playoffs are nothing more but a pipedream, there is no reason not to play Nino.No reason to make him a healthy scratch.

Poorly used as a prospect, he would have been better off in Portland. I do honestly think his growth as a scorer has been stunted by the way Isles management has handled him. I'm just hoping he doesn't continue along the Josh Bailey trend.

I'm not sure anyone expected him to be a top line Nash type player when he was drafted anyway. I'm fine with a second/third line grinder who can score clutch goals.

Rarely has a player come up to the NHL and played 4th line minutes as a teenager. Most either play at a junior level or play, at worst 3rd line minutes. The reason being is that Junior leagues are high quality in North America. However this happens ALL THE TIME in Europe, where talented teenagers are put in defensive roles and/or play 4th minutes day in and day out. There are better comparisons over the pond of players in a similar situation to Nino.
