Nino will definitely start in the AHL, he can come up when there are injuries and prove himself then.

Maybe it was right to let him struggle in the NHL than to let him dominate the WHL. You should judge him and the decisions of the Isles after his ELC expires, when he's NHL-ready next year and can play a Top-6 role nobody will talk about his first NHL-year anymore.

People tend to judge too early, a reason that an ELC is 3 years is that the young players need time to adjust and they should get that time. And the way a player adjusts best is different, each player needs probably a different approach.

The reason I worry for him is watching the rest of their top prospects end up as average at best players. Are they bad at picking players? Or are they bad at developing them?

powerforwards always take longer to develop and it didnt help that Nino was rushed into the show while playing 4th line minutes. Anybody suggesting Beach has as much offensive potential as Nino does can't be serious right?

Snow's been gm since 2007. He dealt the 2007 first in the Ryan Smyth trade. The Oilers took Plante 15th overall.

In 2008, Snow dealt down and took Bailey 9th overall, but also came out of that draft with Hamonic,Martin, Ullstrom, Donovan, Ness, Poulin, Petrov.

In 2009 Snow drafted Tavares.
In 2010 he drafted Nino.
In 2011 he drafted Strome
In 2012 he drafted Reinhart.

Strome/Reinhart have not sniffed NHL action. Nno's 2nd pro season is this season and he's in the AHL.

Kind of hard to say Snow's top youngsters end up average at best, with such a small sampling.

How are the Islanders a team in this league, it's an absolute joke they're allowed to knowingly (I'm not going to say intentionally because I'm sure they don't want him to suffer they just place a higher priority on saving a couple million than developing a hockey player) murder a bonafide blue-chip kid's development for an entire season just for salary cap/budget purposes.

Good to see him producing in the AHL. This kid needs a year of top 6 minutes in the AHL and it looks like he'll get that. This will really save his development and get him back on track.

Indeed, but it's just been two games and the team will play very few games in the next few weeks.

I'm more curious to see how things are going after 15-20 games of play.

Lots of proving to do, especially from a consistancy standpoint.

An Oiler fan really shouldn't be commenting on organizational competency.

Are you trying to troll or are you just unable to read or fact check?

Lets start by dispelling this BS notion of yours that the Islanders needed Nino to make it to the Cap Floor. THEY DID NOT. At the end of training camp they had the bonus structure of Staios and Pandolfo to bring them over the Cap floor. Nino came into camp and almost earned a top 6 roster spot untill the severe groin pull in the last days of camp. After being on the IR for two weeks he went to the AHL for a 6 game stint scoring 3g and 4 points. Upon his return to the Islanders line-up he took a spot on the 3rd line and acted like a wreaking ball dishing out hits, scoring a goal and geting in a fight. A week later in Dallas he took a nasty headshot. He took a week to recover from the concussion and was timid to play fast and physical. He ended up on the 4th line when Capuano wanted him to return to a more physical play. He floundered and was not given the opportunity to play a skilled type game the rest of the season.

Next time fact check before you spout off crap that is competely wrong.

This is part of the problem, perception and expectation. Nino wasn't a bonafide blue-chip. He had one nice WHL season ... and then a great WJC and as a result of those World Juniors he got projected to go mid first round. Then the Islanders took him 5th overall, but he's not a 5th overall pick really. The hype train just got way out of control on the kid and he's suffering for it.

I can't recall which other scouting site had Nino in the top 5-6 rankings. But, McKenzie's final ranking is below. It's based on a poll of scouts and they had Nino top 7.

I believe ISS also had him at #6
Hockey Prospect at #9
Redline at 8
TSR at 8.

He was a good bet for a top 10 pick.

It's good to see Nino 'back on track' and playing well. I was initially hoping for him to continue being on that ELC Line with Kabanov and Nelson showcased during the preseason, but I think it's really good for him to be be playing with Cizikas. Being on the top line is the type of ice time he needs to continue his development too.

Up until last season, he was always considered one of the top forward prospects in hockey and was indeed a worthy top-5 selection during that draft. While he did have a nightmare season last year, hopefully it's a good thing for him adding a chip (more like a boulder) on his shoulder and working his butt off to re-establish himself as that power forward he was envisioned to be back in 2010.

I could see him becoming an Erik Cole type of player, a 30 goal scoring power forward. He does need to play with a playmaking center to fully utilize his talents which is a good thing since the Isles have Tavares and very possibly Strome to pair him up with in the future.

I love the comparison PW and agree that Cole is somewhere around Nino's upside. However Eric Cole is a lot better skater than Nino currently, and rightfully so, but Nino needs to improve in that area of his game or else he could end up being a Benoit Pouliot type.

??

Pouliot is a great skater...

I wasn't referring to the skating but the overall career. Pouliot didn't become the powerfoward that he was projected to become despite being a top five pick. Sorry for the confusion :)

How has he looked so far ?

He's producing which suggests he still got his confidence, can anyone confirm it ?

I haven't been able to catch any games due to a busy college schedule but from what I've read he's been playing very confident in his first five games. It sounds like he's been crashing the net and getting his nose dirty, I'm guessing his skating has improved a bit as well, not that it was a liability or anything. He's currently playing first line minutes I believe with our most NHL ready centerman Casey Cizikas. However, Calvin de Haan just went down for the season with yet another shoulder injury, we'll have to see if that affects Nino and the team's chemistry. The Sound Tigers have some time off but play a bunch of games in the upcoming weeks, so expect Nino to show his true colors.

I'm glad to hear it, he's awesome and I wish we had of drafted him.

I got the chance to catch the preseason game in Marlborough, MA and he looked good to me. The biggest difference was that he looked confident and was the obvious leader of his line - Nelson and Kabanov. Was very vocal and kind of looked like a QB, understandable since Nelson and Kabanov are getting their first real taste of pro hockey. He was determined and there was no hesitation to his game, something we rarely saw last year after his concussion and 4th line duty. All in all, it looks like he's regrouped and has that swagger back. He got a serious dose of humility last year, I think that chip on his shoulder should serve him well this year. Great start too which has to be great for his confidence.

The SoundTigers visit Massachusetts this coming weekend and I plan on definitely catching the games on Friday and Sunday in Worcester. Might make the trip over to Springfield to catch the Saturday game. So I'll be getting a very good look at Nino and all the other Baby Isles - this time it'll be for real and not some preseason game. I'll be happy to post my thoughts afterwards, but I wouldn't take what I say too seriously.

On CDH, just terrible news. Was really coming into form and he was the most impressive ST in that preseason game - the kid was as smooth as a baby's butt and poised. I wish him the best, but he's got a tough road ahead of him. Not only getting over the injury, but also the numbers game that will come into play in the next 1-2 years.
