He lacks some of the most basic fundamentals and if him being a polished guy with a ton of pro experience was a mark for him coming into this season, it should scare the shit out of you that someone with that level of experience looks as deficient in certain areas as he does. If it were just a matter of him getting eaten alive along the walls that would be one thing, but he hasn't shown the ability to defend well at this level or push transition enough to the point where he can utilize the best parts of his game. I don't see that drastically changing for him unless he finds a way to reinvent himself or just magically becomes Adam Fox levels of smart out there.

OTOH, Do you still trust the people who claimed that he was a top 4 caliber guy out of the box and would contend for the Calder?

I think my eval of how he would look out of the blocks was a hell of a lot more accurate.

Lundkvist is a much better player when he is not skating with the anchor named Nemeth.

Nils has played 85.4% of even strength time with Nemeth. there isn't much of a sample size without him...

He has like 20 min away from Nemeth spread weirdly across a few partners. It’s not a meaningful sample of data
Exactly, there is nothing dependable to provide any sort of comparison. At this point he has not been an effective NHL player period. And the stats provided reflect Nemeth with and without Nils, it doesnt demonstrate Nils with and without Nemeth...

@chosen there is just no data to make the sort of statement that you made at the nhl level at this point

See reply after your post.

Is it proof?

No.

It is an indicator that it's not fair to judge Lundqvist based on his time with Nemeth.

And what is the value of this chart when the Lundkvist without Nemeth sample is a grand total of 23 minutes?

Edit: I see I should read the rest of the thread before responding.

but what is more meaningful is the 150+ minutes of nemeth away from nils where he’s either just as bad or worse

Not sure this is valuable data either as most of this ice time is with Tinordi who we know is bad and has been bad his whole career.

Again he has hardly any time playing with somebody other than nemeth and those statistics were for nemeth with and without nils. It would make more sense to actually reference statistics that show Nils with and without nemeth if you want to compare that player.

I wouldn't look at Strome's production with and without panarin to determine how panarin plays with and without strome. Those things are not equal.

Gotta play Nemeth and Tinordi 20 minutes a game in all situations to really get enough valuable data to look through. Just to make sure how awful and detrimental they are.

I agree, and I don’t think any of Nemeth, Nils, or Tinordi has been good this year. Nemeth had some spurts, Nils has been improving, and Tinordi is f***ing awful, but the bottom pair has probably been their biggest issue all season.
I wouldn’t be shocked to see a move for a depth dman (or more) at some point) this year.

By the same token, deciding that a rookie defenseman in his first 20 games is disappointing would seem to also not have enough data.

I mean that's a semi smooth attempt to alter the point at hand which is that you said "Lundkvist is a much better player when he is not skating with the anchor named Nemeth." To which you still haven't offered a shred on information to back that up except show that nemeth is a worse player when paired w tinordi than he is with Nils. That's not exactly a convincing argument...

Will you at least admit that Lundqvist is already a better player than Nemeth and that Nemeth has been awful.

I read an interview where a local paper up here in the north asked Lundkvist a couple of questions. He has finally moved out from an apartment hotel and now has a real apartment, which he appreciates alot, to have a real home to go to. He quite often eats dinner at Nemeth's place, as he feels it's nice and comforting to have someone to speak Swedish with. He also added he thinks Zibanejad is a really cool guy that always works hard to try to get better.

He's really impressed by Fox and watches him alot and how he makes plays. He's super happy and impressed about the organization, the players have everything they need or want, so they have nothing to complain about in that regard if they play bad. He also says the first time he played against McDavid he thought: "What the heck am I doing here?", he was in awe how good he was. When McD went coast to coast through the entire Rangers D set the tone for that first meeting.

He says he thinks he has played fine. Not great and not bad, somewhere in the middle. On the question when his first NHL goal will come, he mentions he's recognized he wants to find the courage to play his own game much more, which he hasn't done so far. He also mentions he still has to stay patient [and get used to the NHL game]. Nils kind of has adjusted to the small rink size now he feels like.

He also mentioned the competitive nature of earning a spot on the roster and that there are many good players in the organization. But, he wouldn't have moved over if he didn't think his chances were good.

He feels Gallant has confidence in him so far and hasn't heard anything different. On the question if he feels like a New Yorker yet, the answer is no, he still feels like a villager from the small town of Piteå living in New York. He and his girlfriend have made pretty much everything tourists do in New York and he has appreciated visiting so many different cities in North America.
